We settle a general expression for the Hamiltonian of the electron-phonon deformation potential (DP) interaction in the case of non-polar core-shell cylindrical nanowires (NWs). On the basis of long range phenomenological continuum model for the opti cal modes and by taking into account the bulk phonon dispersions, we study the size dependence and strain-induced shift of the electron-phonon coupling strengths for Ge-Si and Si-Ge NWs. We derive analytically the DP electron-phonon Hamiltonian and report some numerical results for the frequency core modes and vibrational amplitudes. Our approach allows for the unambiguous identification of the strain and confinement effects. We explore the dependence of mode frequencies and hole-DP scattering rates on the structural parameters of these core-shell structures, which constitute a basic tool for the characterization and device applications of these novel nanosystems.
Following several recommendations presented by the Astrophysics Decadal Survey 2010 centered around the need to define a future ultraviolet-optical space capability, on 2012 May 25, NASA issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking persuasive ultra violet (UV) and visible wavelength astrophysics science investigations. The goal was to develop a cohesive and compelling set of science objectives that motivate and support the development of the next generation of ultraviolet/visible space astrophysics missions. Responses were due on 10 August 2012 when 34 submissions were received addressing a number of potential science drivers. A UV/visible Mission RFI Workshop was held on 2012 September 20 where each of these submissions was summarized and discussed in the context of each other. We present a scientific analysis of these submissions and presentations and the pursuant measurement capability needs, which could influence ultraviolet/visible technology development plans for the rest of this decade. We also describe the process and requirements leading to the inception of this community RFI, subsequent workshop and the expected evolution of these ideas and concepts for the remainder of this decade.
We present a study of the DNA translocation of the bacteriophage phi 29 packaging molecular motor. From the experimental available information we present a model system based in an stochastic fashing potential, which reproduces the experimental obser vations such as: detailed trajectories, steps and substeps, spatial correlation, and velocity. Moreover the model allows the evaluation of power and efficiency of this motor. We have found that the maximum power regime does not correspond with that of the maximum efficiency. These informations can stimulate further experiments.
State estimation is necessary in diagnosing anomalies in Water Demand Systems (WDS). In this paper we present a neural network performing such a task. State estimation is performed by using optimization, which tries to reconcile all the available inf ormation. Quantification of the uncertainty of the input data (telemetry measures and demand predictions) can be achieved by means of robust estate estimation. Using a mathematical model of the network, fuzzy estimated states for anomalous states of the network can be obtained. They are used to train a neural network capable of assessing WDS anomalies associated with particular sets of measurements.
