A common assumption in multimodal learning is the completeness of training data, i.e., full modalities are available in all training examples. Although there exists research endeavor in developing novel methods to tackle the incompleteness of testing data, e.g., modalities are partially missing in testing examples, few of them can handle incomplete training modalities. The problem becomes even more challenging if considering the case of severely missing, e.g., 90% training examples may have incomplete modalities. For the first time in the literature, this paper formally studies multimodal learning with missing modality in terms of flexibility (missing modalities in training, testing, or both) and efficiency (most training data have incomplete modality). Technically, we propose a new method named SMIL that leverages Bayesian meta-learning in uniformly achieving both objectives. To validate our idea, we conduct a series of experiments on three popular benchmarks: MM-IMDb, CMU-MOSI, and avMNIST. The results prove the state-of-the-art performance of SMIL over existing methods and generative baselines including autoencoders and generative adversarial networks. Joint extraction refers to extracting triples, composed of entities and relations, simultaneously from the text with a single model. However, most existing methods fail to extract all triples accurately and efficiently from sentences with overlapping issue, i.e., the same entity is included in multiple triples. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme called Bidirectional Tree Tagging (BiTT) to label overlapping triples in text. In BiTT, the triples with the same relation category in a sentence are especially represented as two binary trees, each of which is converted into a word-level tags sequence to label each word. Based on BiTT scheme, we develop an end-to-end extraction framework to predict the BiTT tags and further extract triples efficiently. We adopt the Bi-LSTM and the BERT as the encoder in our framework respectively, and obtain promising results in public English as well as Chinese datasets.
Line matching plays an essential role in structure from motion (SFM) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), especially in low-textured and repetitive scenes. In this paper, we present a new method of using a graph convolution network to ma tch line segments in a pair of images, and we design a graph-based strategy of matching line segments with relaxing to an optimal transport problem. In contrast to hand-crafted line matching algorithms, our approach learns local line segment descriptor and the matching simultaneously through end-to-end training. The results show our method outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques, and especially, the recall is improved from 45.28% to 70.47% under a similar presicion. The main theme of this work is a unifying algorithm, textbf{L}ooptextbf{L}ess textbf{S}ARAH (L2S) for problems formulated as summation of $n$ individual loss functions. L2S broadens a recently developed variance reduction method known as SARAH. To fi nd an $epsilon$-accurate solution, L2S enjoys a complexity of ${cal O}big( (n+kappa) ln (1/epsilon)big)$ for strongly convex problems. For convex problems, when adopting an $n$-dependent step size, the complexity of L2S is ${cal O}(n+ sqrt{n}/epsilon)$; while for more frequently adopted $n$-independent step size, the complexity is ${cal O}(n+ n/epsilon)$. Distinct from SARAH, our theoretical findings support an $n$-independent step size in convex problems without extra assumptions. For nonconvex problems, the complexity of L2S is ${cal O}(n+ sqrt{n}/epsilon)$. Our numerical tests on neural networks suggest that L2S can have better generalization properties than SARAH. Along with L2S, our side results include the linear convergence of the last iteration for SARAH in strongly convex problems.
The present paper considers leveraging network topology information to improve the convergence rate of ADMM for decentralized optimization, where networked nodes work collaboratively to minimize the objective. Such problems can be solved efficiently using ADMM via decomposing the objective into easier subproblems. Properly exploiting network topology can significantly improve the algorithm performance. Hybrid ADMM explores the direction of exploiting node information by taking into account node centrality but fails to utilize edge information. This paper fills the gap by incorporating both node and edge information and provides a novel convergence rate bound for decentralized ADMM that explicitly depends on network topology. Such a novel bound is attainable for certain class of problems, thus tight. The explicit dependence further suggests possible directions to optimal design of edge weights to achieve the best performance. Numerical experiments show that simple heuristic methods could achieve better performance, and also exhibits robustness to topology changes.
The present work introduces the hybrid consensus alternating direction method of multipliers (H-CADMM), a novel framework for optimization over networks which unifies existing distributed optimization approaches, including the centralized and the dec entralized consensus ADMM. H-CADMM provides a flexible tool that leverages the underlying graph topology in order to achieve a desirable sweet-spot between node-to-node communication overhead and rate of convergence -- thereby alleviating known limitations of both C-CADMM and D-CADMM. A rigorous analysis of the novel method establishes linear convergence rate, and also guides the choice of parameters to optimize this rate. The novel hybrid update rules of H-CADMM lend themselves to in-network acceleration that is shown to effect considerable -- and essentially free-of-charge -- performance boost over the fully decentralized ADMM. Comprehensive numerical tests validate the analysis and showcase the potential of the method in tackling efficiently, widely useful learning tasks.
A number of applications in engineering, social sciences, physics, and biology involve inference over networks. In this context, graph signals are widely encountered as descriptors of vertex attributes or features in graph-structured data. Estimating such signals in all vertices given noisy observations of their values on a subset of vertices has been extensively analyzed in the literature of signal processing on graphs (SPoG). This paper advocates kernel regression as a framework generalizing popular SPoG modeling and reconstruction and expanding their capabilities. Formulating signal reconstruction as a regression task on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of graph signals permeates benefits from statistical learning, offers fresh insights, and allows for estimators to leverage richer forms of prior information than existing alternatives. A number of SPoG notions such as bandlimitedness, graph filters, and the graph Fourier transform are naturally accommodated in the kernel framework. In this work, we correlated the angular dependence of the Raman response of black phosphorus to its crystallographic orientation by using transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the intensity of the A2g mode reached a maximum when the polarization direction of the incident light was parallel to the zigzag crystallographic orientation. Notably, it was further confirmed that the zigzag crystallographic direction exhibited superior conductance and carrier mobility. Because of the lattice extension along the armchair direction, an intensification of the anisotropic Raman response was observed. This work provides direct evidence of the correlation between anisotropic properties and crystallographic direction and represents a turning point in the discussion of the angular-dependent electronic properties of black phosphorus.
