For some variants of regression models, including partial, measurement error or error-in-variables, latent effects, semi-parametric and otherwise corrupted linear models, the classical parametric tests generally do not perform well. Various modificat ions and generalizations considered extensively in the literature rests on stringent regularity assumptions which are not likely to be tenable in many applications. However, in such non-standard cases, rank based tests can be adapted better, and further, incorporation of rank analysis of covariance tools enhance their power-efficiency. Numerical studies and a real data illustration show the superiority of rank based inference in such corrupted linear models.
With x-ray absorption spectroscopy we investigated the orbital reconstruction and the induced ferromagnetic moment of the interfacial Cu atoms in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (YBCO/LCMO) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$ _{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (LSCO/LCMO) multilayers. We demonstrate that these electronic and magnetic proximity effects are coupled and are common to these cuprate/manganite multilayers. Moreover, we show that they are closely linked to a specific interface termination with a direct Cu-O-Mn bond. We furthermore show that the intrinsic hole doping of the cuprate layers and the local strain due to the lattice mismatch between the cuprate and manganite layers are not of primary importance. These findings underline the central role of the covalent bonding at the cuprate/manganite interface in defining the spin-electronic properties.

Epitaxial La1.85Sr0.15CuO4/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices on (001)-oriented LaSrAlO4 substrates have been grown with pulsed laser deposition technique. Their structural, magnetic and superconducting properties have been determined with in-situ reflecti on high energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, specular neutron reflectometry, scanning transmission electron microscopy, electric transport, and magnetization measurements. We find that despite the large mismatch between the in-plane lattice parameters of LSCO and LCMO these superlattices can be grown epitaxially and with a high crystalline quality. While the first LSCO layer remains clamped to the LSAO substrate, a sizeable strain relaxation occurs already in the first LCMO layer. The following LSCO and LCMO layers adopt a nearly balanced state in which the tensile and compressive strain effects yield alternating in-plane lattice parameters with an almost constant average value. No major defects are observed in the LSCO layers, while a significant number of vertical antiphase boundaries are found in the LCMO layers. The LSCO layers remain superconducting with a relatively high superconducting onset temperature of about 36 K. The macroscopic superconducting response is also evident in the magnetization data due to a weak diamagnetic signal below 10 K for H || ab and a sizeable paramagnetic shift for H || c that can be explained in terms of a vortex-pinning-induced flux compression. The LCMO layers maintain a strongly ferromagnetic state with a Curie temperature of about 190 K and a large low-temperature saturation moment of about 3.5(1) muB. These results suggest that the LSCO/LCMO superlattices can be used to study the interaction between the antagonistic ferromagnetic and superconducting orders and, in combination with previous studies on YBCO/LCMO superlattices, may allow one to identify the relevant mechanisms.
Polarization is an important indicator of stellar evolution, especially for stars evolving from red-giant stage to planetary nebulae. However, not much is known about the polarimetric properties of the carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, althoug h they have been well studied in terms of photometric as well as low- and high-resolution spectroscopy. We report here first-ever estimates of V-band polarimetry of a group of CEMP stars. V-band polarimetry was planned as the V-band is known to show maximum polarization among BVRI polarimetry for any scattering of light caused due to dust. Based on these estimates the program stars show a distinct classification into two: one with p% < 0.4 and the other with p% > 1. Stars with circumstellar material exhibit a certain amount of polarization that may be caused by scattering of starlight due to circumstellar dust distribution into non-spherically symmetric envelopes. The degree of polarization increases with asymmetries present in the geometry of the circumstellar dust distribution. Our results reflect upon these properties. While the sample size is relatively small, the polarimetric separation of the two groups (p% < 0.4 and p% > 1) is very distinct; this finding, therefore, opens up an avenue of exploration with regard to CEMP stars.
In this paper we obtain several characterizations of the adjacency matrix of a probe interval graph. In course of this study we describe an easy method of obtaining interval representation of an interval bipartite graph from its adjacency matrix. Fin ally, we note that if we add a loop at every probe vertex of a probe interval graph, then the Ferrers dimension of the corresponding symmetric bipartite graph is at most 3.

High-dimensional data models, often with low sample size, abound in many interdisciplinary studies, genomics and large biological systems being most noteworthy. The conventional assumption of multinormality or linearity of regression may not be plaus ible for such models which are likely to be statistically complex due to a large number of parameters as well as various underlying restraints. As such, parametric approaches may not be very effective. Anything beyond parametrics, albeit, having increased scope and robustness perspectives, may generally be baffled by the low sample size and hence unable to give reasonable margins of errors. Kendalls tau statistic is exploited in this context with emphasis on dimensional rather than sample size asymptotics. The Chen--Stein theorem has been thoroughly appraised in this study. Applications of these findings in some microarray data models are illustrated.
