Federated learning aims to protect users privacy while performing data analysis from different participants. However, it is challenging to guarantee the training efficiency on heterogeneous systems due to the various computational capabilities and co mmunication bottlenecks. In this work, we propose FedSkel to enable computation-efficient and communication-efficient federated learning on edge devices by only updating the models essential parts, named skeleton networks. FedSkel is evaluated on real edge devices with imbalanced datasets. Experimental results show that it could achieve up to 5.52$times$ speedups for CONV layers back-propagation, 1.82$times$ speedups for the whole training process, and reduce 64.8% communication cost, with negligible accuracy loss.
Recently proposed fine-grained 3D visual grounding is an essential and challenging task, whose goal is to identify the 3D object referred by a natural language sentence from other distractive objects of the same category. Existing works usually adopt dynamic graph networks to indirectly model the intra/inter-modal interactions, making the model difficult to distinguish the referred object from distractors due to the monolithic representations of visual and linguistic contents. In this work, we exploit Transformer for its natural suitability on permutation-invariant 3D point clouds data and propose a TransRefer3D network to extract entity-and-relation aware multimodal context among objects for more discriminative feature learning. Concretely, we devise an Entity-aware Attention (EA) module and a Relation-aware Attention (RA) module to conduct fine-grained cross-modal feature matching. Facilitated by co-attention operation, our EA module matches visual entity features with linguistic entity features while RA module matches pair-wise visual relation features with linguistic relation features, respectively. We further integrate EA and RA modules into an Entity-and-Relation aware Contextual Block (ERCB) and stack several ERCBs to form our TransRefer3D for hierarchical multimodal context modeling. Extensive experiments on both Nr3D and Sr3D datasets demonstrate that our proposed model significantly outperforms existing approaches by up to 10.6% and claims the new state-of-the-art. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work investigating Transformer architecture for fine-grained 3D visual grounding task.
In this paper, we introduce MedLane -- a new human-annotated Medical Language translation dataset, to align professional medical sentences with layperson-understandable expressions. The dataset contains 12,801 training samples, 1,015 validation sampl es, and 1,016 testing samples. We then evaluate one naive and six deep learning-based approaches on the MedLane dataset, including directly copying, a statistical machine translation approach Moses, four neural machine translation approaches (i.e., the proposed PMBERT-MT model, Seq2Seq and its two variants), and a modified text summarization model PointerNet. To compare the results, we utilize eleven metrics, including three new measures specifically designed for this task. Finally, we discuss the limitations of MedLane and baselines, and point out possible research directions for this task.
Sparsification is an efficient approach to accelerate CNN inference, but it is challenging to take advantage of sparsity in training procedure because the involved gradients are dynamically changed. Actually, an important observation shows that most of the activation gradients in back-propagation are very close to zero and only have a tiny impact on weight-updating. Hence, we consider pruning these very small gradients randomly to accelerate CNN training according to the statistical distribution of activation gradients. Meanwhile, we theoretically analyze the impact of pruning algorithm on the convergence. The proposed approach is evaluated on AlexNet and ResNet-{18, 34, 50, 101, 152} with CIFAR-{10, 100} and ImageNet datasets. Experimental results show that our training approach could substantially achieve up to $5.92 times$ speedups at back-propagation stage with negligible accuracy loss.
The inverse mapping of GANs(Generative Adversarial Nets) generator has a great potential value.Hence, some works have been developed to construct the inverse function of generator by directly learning or adversarial learning.While the results are enc ouraging, the problem is highly challenging and the existing ways of training inverse models of GANs have many disadvantages, such as hard to train or poor performance.Due to these reasons, we propose a new approach based on using inverse generator ($IG$) model as encoder and pre-trained generator ($G$) as decoder of an AutoEncoder network to train the $IG$ model. In the proposed model, the difference between the input and output, which are both the generated image of pre-trained GANs generator, of AutoEncoder is directly minimized. The optimizing method can overcome the difficulty in training and inverse model of an non one-to-one function.We also applied the inverse model of GANs generators to image searching and translation.The experimental results prove that the proposed approach works better than the traditional approaches in image searching.
