Age-of-Information (AoI), or simply age, which measures the data freshness, is essential for real-time Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. On the other hand, energy saving is urgently required by many energy-constrained IoT devices. This paper stu dies the energy-age tradeoff for status update from a sensor to a monitor over an error-prone channel. The sensor can sleep, sense and transmit a new update, or retransmit by considering both sensing energy and transmit energy. An infinite-horizon average cost problem is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP) with the objective of minimizing the weighted sum of average AoI and average energy consumption. By solving the associated discounted cost problem and analyzing the Markov chain under the optimal policy, we prove that there exists a threshold optimal stationary policy with only two thresholds, i.e., one threshold on the AoI at the transmitter (AoIT) and the other on the AoI at the receiver (AoIR). Moreover, the two thresholds can be efficiently found by a line search. Numerical results show the performance of the optimal policies and the tradeoff curves with different parameters. Comparisons with the conventional policies show that considering sensing energy is of significant impact on the policy design, and introducing sleep mode greatly expands the tradeoff range.
Spin correlations of $Lambda$-hyperons, extracted from their self-analyzing weak decays, provide unique insight into Bell-type locality tests within the QCD strings formed in high-energy collider experiments. We show from very general considerations that the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality test is typically less stringent for the states produced in QCD strings; however they provide a benchmark for quantum-to-classical transitions induced by varying i) the associated hadron multiplicity, ii) the spin of nucleons, iii) the separation in rapidity between pairs, and iv) the kinematic regimes accessed. These studies also enable the extraction of quantitative measures of quantum entanglement. We explore such questions within a simple model of a QCD string comprised of singlets of two partial distinguishable fermion flavors and compare analytical results to those obtained on quantum hardware. We further discuss a class of spin Hamiltonians that model the complex quantum dynamics of $Lambda$ spin correlations embedded in the QCD string . Prospects for extracting quantum information from $Lambda$ measurements at current and future colliders are outlined.
Many modern nanofabrication and imaging techniques require an ultra-quiet environment to reach optimal resolution. Isolation from ambient vibrations is often achieved by placing the sensitive instrument atop a massive block that floats on air springs and is surrounded by acoustic barriers. Because typical building noise drops off above 120 Hz, it is advantageous to raise the flexural resonance frequencies of the inertia block and instrument far above 120 Hz. However, it can be challenging to obtain a high fundamental frequency of the floating block using a simple rectangular design. Here we design, construct, and characterize a vibration isolation system with a cylindrical inertia block, whose lowest resonance frequency of 249 Hz shows good agreement between finite element analysis simulation and directly measured modes. Our simulations show that a cylindrical design can achieve higher fundamental resonance frequency than a rectangular design of the same mass.
In this paper, we explore the properties of holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), mutual information (MI) and entanglement of purification (EoP) in holographic Lifshitz theory. These informational quantities exhibit some universal properties of hol ographic dual field theory. For most configuration parameters and temperatures, these informational quantities change monotonously with the Lifshitz dynamical critical exponent $z$. However, we also observe some non-monotonic behaviors for these informational quantities in some specific spaces of configuration parameters and temperatures. A particularly interesting phenomenon is that a dome-shaped diagram emerges in the behavior of MI vs $z$, and correspondingly a trapezoid-shaped profile appears in that of EoP vs $z$. This means that for some specific configuration parameters and temperatures, the system measured in terms of MI and EoP is entangled only in a certain intermediate range of $z$.
We study the information quantities, including the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), mutual information (MI) and entanglement of purification (EoP), over Gubser-Rocha model. The remarkable property of this model is the zero entropy density at g round state, in term of which we expect to extract novel, even singular informational properties in zero temperature limit. Surprisedly, we do not observe any singular behavior of entanglement-related physical quantities under the zero temperature limit. Nevertheless, we find a peculiar property from Gubser-Rocha model that in low temperature region, the HEE decreases with the increase of temperature, which is contrary to that in most holographic models. We argue that this novel phenomenon is brought by the singular property of the zero temperature limit, of which the analytical verification is present. In addition, we also compare the features of the information quantities in Gubser-Rocha model with those in Reissner-Nordstrom Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole model. It is shown that the HEE and MI of Gubser-Rocha model are always larger than those of RN-AdS model, while the EoP behaves in an opposite way. Our results indicate that MI and EoP could have different abilities in describing mixed state entanglement.
Age of Information (AoI), defined as the time elapsed since the generation of the latest received update, is a promising performance metric to measure data freshness for real-time status monitoring. In many applications, status information needs to b e extracted through computing, which can be processed at an edge server enabled by mobile edge computing (MEC). In this paper, we aim to minimize the average AoI within a given deadline by jointly scheduling the transmissions and computations of a series of update packets with deterministic transmission and computing times. The main analytical results are summarized as follows. Firstly, the minimum deadline to guarantee the successful transmission and computing of all packets is given. Secondly, a emph{no-wait computing} policy which intuitively attains the minimum AoI is introduced, and the feasibility condition of the policy is derived. Finally, a closed-form optimal scheduling policy is obtained on the condition that the deadline exceeds a certain threshold. The behavior of the optimal transmission and computing policy is illustrated by numerical results with different values of the deadline, which validates the analytical results.
Freshness of data is an important performance metric for real-time applications, which can be measured by age-of-information. For computation-intensive messages, the embedded information is not available until being computed. In this paper, we study the age-of-information for computation-intensive messages, which are firstly transmitted to a mobile edge server, and then processed in the edge server to extract the embedded information. The packet generation follows zero-wait policy, by which a new packet is generated when the last one is just delivered to the edge server. The queue in front of the edge server adopts one-packet-buffer replacement policy, meaning that only the latest received packet is preserved. We derive the expression of average age-of-information for exponentially distributed transmission time and computing time. With packet replacement, the average age is reduced compared with the case without packet replacement, especially when the transmission rate is close to or greater than the computing rate.

Age-of-information is a novel performance metric in communication systems to indicate the freshness of the latest received data, which has wide applications in monitoring and control scenarios. Another important performance metric in these applicatio ns is energy consumption, since monitors or sensors are usually energy constrained. In this paper, we study the energy-age tradeoff in a status update system where data transmission from a source to a receiver may encounter failure due to channel error. As the status sensing process consumes energy, when a transmission failure happens, the source may either retransmit the existing data to save energy for sensing, or sense and transmit a new update to minimize age-of-information. A threshold-based retransmission policy is considered where each update is allowed to be transmitted no more than M times. Closed-form average age-of-information and energy consumption is derived and expressed as a function of channel failure probability and maximum number of retransmissions M. Numerical simulations validate our analytical results, and illustrate the tradeoff between average age-of-information and energy consumption.
In this paper, we consider a scenario where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) collects data from a set of sensors on a straight line. The UAV can either cruise or hover while communicating with the sensors. The objective is to minimize the UAVs total flight time from a starting point to a destination while allowing each sensor to successfully upload a certain amount of data using a given amount of energy. The whole trajectory is divided into non-overlapping data collection intervals, in each of which one sensor is served by the UAV. The data collection intervals, the UAVs speed and the sensors transmit powers are jointly optimized. The formulated flight time minimization problem is difficult to solve. We first show that when only one sensor is present, the sensors transmit power follows a water-filling policy and the UAVs speed can be found efficiently by bisection search. Then, we show that for the general case with multiple sensors, the flight time minimization problem can be equivalently reformulated as a dynamic programming (DP) problem. The subproblem involved in each stage of the DP reduces to handle the case with only one sensor node. Numerical results present insightful behaviors of the UAV and the sensors. Specifically, it is observed that the UAVs optimal speed is proportional to the given energy of the sensors and the inter-sensor distance, but inversely proportional to the data upload requirement.
In this letter, we introduce stacked fishnet metamaterial for steering light in microwave region. We numerically demonstrate that optical Bloch oscillations and a focus of as small as one sixth of a wavelength can be achieved. The flexibility of vary ing geometrical parameters of the fishnet slabs provides an efficient way for tuning its local effective media parameters and opens the possibility for controlling light arbitrarily. The experiment verifies subwavelength-sized light focusing effect by scanning magnetic field at the surface of the sample directly.
