We study the thermoelectric transport of a small metallic island weakly coupled to two electrodes by tunnel junctions. In the Coulomb blockade regime, in the case when the ground state of the system corresponds to an even number of electrons on the i sland, the main mechanism of electron transport at lowest temperatures is elastic cotunneling. In this regime, the transport coefficients strongly depend on the realization of the random impurity potential or the shape of the island. Using the random-matrix theory, we calculate the thermopower and the thermoelectric kinetic coefficient and study the statistics of their mesoscopic fluctuations in the elastic cotunneling regime. The fluctuations of the thermopower turn out to be much larger than the average value.
Solid state physics and quantum electrodynamics with its ultra-relativistic (massless) particles meet, to their mutual beneit, in the electronic properties of one-dimensional carbon nanotubes as well as two-dimensional graphene or surfaces of topolog ical insulators. However, clear experimental evidence for electronic states with conical dispersion relations in all three dimensions, conceivable in certain bulk materials, is still missing. In the present work, we fabricate and study a zinc-blend crystal, HgCdTe, at the point of the semiconductor-to-semimetal topological transition. Three-dimensional massless electrons with a velocity of about 10$^6$ m/s are observed in this material, as testifed by: (i) the dynamical conductivity which increases linearly with the photon frequency, (ii) in a magnetic field $B$, by a $sqrt{B}$ dependence of dipole-active inter-Landau-level resonances and (iii) the spin splitting of Landau levels, which follows a $sqrt{B}$ dependence, typical of ultra-relativistic particles but not really seen in any other electronic system so far.
We study the properties of the normal modes of a chain of Josephson junctions in the simultaneous presence of disorder and absorption. We consider the superconducting regime of small phase fluctuations and focus on the case where the effects of disor der and absorption can be treated additively. We analyze the frequency shift and the localization length of the modes. We also calculate the distribution of the frequency-dependent impedance of the chain. The distribution is Gaussian if the localization length is long compared to the absorption length; it has a power law tail in the opposite limit.

Recently, it was predicted that if all one-electron states in a non-interacting disordered system are localized, the interaction between electrons in the absence of coupling to phonons leads to a finite-temperature metal-insulator trnasition. Here we show that even in the presence of a weak coupling to phonons the transition manifests itself (i) in the nonlinear conduction, leading to a bistable $I$-$V$ curve, (ii) by a dramatic enhancement of the nonequilibrium current noise near the transition.
