A review of the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics Volume 52, 2014 (Ed. S.M. Faber, Ewine van Dishoeck, and John Kormendy) is given, with a perspective of understanding the current trends in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The impact of high vol ume data, high connectivity, and fast computations is clearly seen in the various research areas discussed in this volume. This has provided unprecedented development in the understanding of various astrophysical phenomena. At the same time, some negative trends like commodification of science, ignoring dissenting views are also evident.

GRB 130925A is an ultra-long GRB, and it shows clear evidences for a thermal emission in the soft X-ray data of emph{Swift}/XRT ($sim0.5$,keV), lasting till the X-ray afterglow phase. Due to the long duration of the GRB, the burst could be studied in hard X-rays with high-resolution focusing detectors (emph{NuSTAR}). The blackbody temperature, as measured by the emph{Swift}/XRT, shows a decreasing trend till the late phase (Piro et al. 2014) whereas the high-energy data reveals a significant blackbody component during the late epochs at an order of magnitude higher temperature ($sim5$,keV), as compared to the contemporaneous low energy data (Bellm et al. 2014). We resolve this apparent contradiction by demonstrating that a model with two black bodies and a power-law (2BBPL) is consistent with the data right from the late prompt emission to the afterglow phase. Both the blackbodies show a similar cooling behaviour upto the late time. We invoke a structured jet, having a fast spine and a slower sheath layer, to identify the location of these blackbodies. Independent of the physical interpretation, we propose that the 2BBPL model is a generic feature of the prompt emission of all long GRBs, and the thermal emission found in the afterglow phase of different GRBs reflects the lingering thermal component of the prompt emission with diverse time-scales. We strengthen this proposal by pointing out a close similarity between the spectral evolutions of this GRB and GRB~090618, a source with significant wide band data during the early afterglow phase.

Observations of Galactic black hole sources are traditionally done in the classical X-ray range (2 -- 10 keV) due to sensitivity constraints. Most of the accretion power, however, is radiated above 10 keV and the study of these sources in hard X-rays has the potential to unravel the radiation mechanisms operating at the inner region of the accretion disk, which is believed to be the seat of a myriad of fascinating features like jet emission, high frequency QPO emission etc. I will briefly summarise the long term hard X-ray observational features like spectral state identification, state transitions and hints of polarised emission, and describe the new insights that would be provided by the forthcoming Astrosat satellite, particularly emphasising the contributions expected from the CZT-Imager payload.

The evolution of different types of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and the coupled radiative/physical changes in the accretion disk are still poorly understood. In a few black hole binaries it was found that fast evolution of QPOs is associated w ith spectral variations. Such studies in other black hole binaries are important to understand the QPO phenomenon. For the black hole transient XTE J1817-330, we study fast QPO transitions and accompanying spectral variations to investigate what causes the spectral variation during the QPO transition. Roy et al. (2011) found QPOs in ten RXTE observations of XTE J1817-330. We found that, among the ten observations, only one observation shows erratic dips in its X-ray light curve. The power density spectra and the corresponding energy spectra were extracted and analyzed for the dip and non-dip sections of the light curve. We found that type-B $sim$6 Hz QPO changes into type-A QPO in a few tens of seconds along with a flux decrease. This transient evolution is accompanied with a significant spectral variation. We report a transient QPO feature and accompanying spectral variation in XTE J1817-330. Based on our findings, we discuss the origin of fast evolution of QPOs and spectral variations.
The simultaneous and coupled evolution of horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) and normal branch oscillation (NBO) in Z-type sources suggests that the production of HBO is connected to NBO and is caused by changes in the physical/radiative properties of the inner accretion disk, although there is a lack of substantial spectral evidence to support this. In this {it Letter}, we present the results of an analysis of a RXTE observation of a Z source GX~5-1, where the 6 Hz NBO is simultaneously detected along with a HBO at 51 Hz. The variations in the intensity and the associated power density spectrum indicate that the HBO and NBO are strongly coupled, originating from the same location in the inner accretion disk. The absence of HBO and NBO in the lower energy bands, an increase in the rms amplitude with energy and a smooth transition among them suggest that they are produced in the hot inner regions of the accretion disk. Based on a spectral analysis, we found a signature of changing or physically modified inner disk front during the coupled HBO and NBO evolution. We explore the various models to explain the observed phenomenon and propose that the NBO is affiliated to the oscillations in the thick/puffed-up inner region of the accretion disk.

We present the results of an analysis of the prompt gamma-ray emission from GRB 090618 using the RT-2 Experiment onboard the Coronas-Photon satellite. GRB 090618 shows multiple peaks and a detailed study of the temporal structure as a function of ene rgy is carried out. As the GRB was incident at an angle of 77 degree to the detector axis, we have generated appropriate response functions of the detectors to derive the spectrum of this GRB. We have augmented these results using the publicly available data from the Swift BAT detector and show that a combined spectral analysis can measure the spectral parameters quite accurately. We also attempt a spectral and timing analysis of individual peaks and find evidence for a systematic change in the pulse emission characteristics for the successive pulses. In particular, we find that the peak energy of the spectrum, E_p, is found to monotonically decrease with time, for the successive pulses of this GRB.

Calibration of X-ray detectors is very important to understand the performance characteristics of the detectors and their variation with time and changing operational conditions. This enables the most accurate translation of the measurements to absol ute and relative values of the incident X-ray photon energy so that physical models of the source emission can be tested. It is a general practice to put a known X-ray source (radio active source) in the detector housing for the calibration purpose. This, however, increases the background. Tagging the calibration source with the signal from a simultaneously emitted charge particle (like alpha particle) can identify the X-ray event used for calibration. Here in this paper, we present a new design for an alpha-tagged X-ray source using Am^241 radio active source and describe its performance characteristics. Its application for the upcoming Astrosat satellite is also discussed.

The origin of soft X-ray excess emission from type 1 active galactic nuclei has remained a major problem for the last two decades. It has not been possible to distinguish alternative models for the soft excess emission despite the excellent data qual ity provided by XMM-Newton and Chandra. Here we present observations of time lags between the soft and hard band X-ray emission and discuss the implications to the models for the soft excess. We also device a method to distinguish the models for the soft excess using Suzakus broadband capability.
