We investigated the effects of paramagnetic (PM) fluctuations on the thermochemistry of the MnO(100) surface in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) using the noncollinear magnetic sampling method textit{plus} $U$ (NCMSM$+U$). Various physical properties, such as the electronic structure, free energy, and charge occupation, of the MnO (100) surface in the PM state with several OER intermediates, were reckoned and compared to those in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state. We found that PM fluctuation enhances charge transfer from a surface Mn ion to each of the intermediates and strengthens the chemical bond between them, while not altering the overall features, such as the rate determining step and resting state, in reaction pathways. The enhanced charge transfer can be attributed to the delocalized nature of valence bands observed in the PM surface. In addition, it was observed that chemical-bond enhancement depends on the intermediates, resulting in significant deviations in reaction energy barriers. Our study suggests that PM fluctuations play a significant role in the thermochemistry of chemical reactions occurring on correlated oxide surfaces.

Investigation of phosphate species adsorption/desorption processes was performed on Ag(100) and Ag(111) electrodes in H$_{3}$PO$_{4}$, KH$_{2}$PO$_{4}$ and K$_{3}$PO$_{4}$ solutions by Current-Potential ($j-V$) profiles and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy ($EIS$). We used the equivalent circuit method to fit the impedance spectra. Different electrical equivalent circuits ($EECs$) were employed depending on the potential region that was analyzed. For potentials more negative than the onset of the hydrogen evolution reaction ($her$), a charge transfer resistance (R$_{ct}$) in parallel to the $(RC)$ branches was included. Peaks from $j-V$ profiles were integrated to estimate surface coverage. A reversible process was observed for Ag(hkl)/KH$_{2}$PO$_{4}$ systems, where a value of 0.07 ML was obtained. For Ag(111)/H$_{3}$PO$_{4}$, a coverage of about 0.024 ML was calculated from anodic/cathodic $j-V$ profiles, whereas for Ag(hkl)/K$_{3}$PO$_{4}$ systems different values were obtained from integration of anodic/cathodic peaks due to highly irreversible processes were observed. In the case of Ag(hkl)/K$_{3}$PO$_{4}$, the capacitance (C$_{(phi)}$) plots are well differentiated for the two faces, and co-adsorption of OH$^{-}$ was evaluated from resistance parameters. Characteristic face-specific relaxation times are obtained for each electrode. In addition, it was found that the onset potential of $her$ for Ag(111) at pH=1.60 was about 100 mV more negative compare to Ag(100).
The structure and dynamics of atomic oxygen adsorbed on Ag(410) and Ag(210) surfaces have been investigated using density functional theory. Our results show that the adsorption configuration in which O adatoms decorate the upper side of the (110) steps forming O--Ag--O rows is particularly stable for both surfaces. On Ag(210), this arrangement is more stable than other configurations at all the investigated coverages. On Ag(410), adsorption on the terrace and at the step edge are almost degenerate, the former being slightly preferred at low coverage while the latter is stabilized by increasing the coverage. These findings are substantiated by a comparison between the vibrational modes, calculated within density-functional perturbation theory, and the HREEL spectrum which has been recently measured in these systems.

We have studied the evolution of the Spin Hall Effect in the regime where the material size responsible for the spin accumulation is either smaller or larger than the spin diffusion length. Lateral spin valve structures with Pt insertions were successfully used to measure the spin absorption efficiency as well as the spin accumulation in Pt induced through the spin Hall effect. Under a constant applied current the results show a decrease of the spin accumulation signal is more pronounced as the Pt thickness exceeds the spin diffusion length. This implies that the spin accumulation originates from bulk scattering inside the Pt wire and the spin diffusion length limits the SHE. We have also analyzed the temperature variation of the spin hall conductivity to identify the dominant scattering mechanism.
The effect of oxygen adsorption on the local structure and electronic properties of monolayer graphene grown on SiC(0001) has been studied by means of Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), microprobe Low Energy Electron Diffraction (muLEED) and microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission (muARPES). We show that the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) is partially decoupled after oxidation. The monitoring of the oxidation process demonstrates that the oxygen saturates the Si dangling bonds, breaks some Si-C bonds at the interface and intercalates the graphene layer. Accurate control over the oxidation parameters enables us to tune the charge density modulation in the layer.
The morphology evolution of Si (100) surfaces under 1200 eV Ar+ ion bombardment at normal incidence with and without metal incorporation is presented. The formation of nanodot patterns is observed only when the stationary Fe concentration in the surface is above 8x10^14 cm^-2. This is interpreted in terms of an additional surface instability due to non-uniform sputtering in connection with metal enrichment at the nanodots. At low metal concentration smoothing dominates and pattern formation is thus inhibited. The transition from a k^-2 to a k^-4 behavior in the asymptotic power spectral density function supports the conclusion that ballistic smoothing and ion-enhanced viscous flow are the two dominant mechanisms of surface relaxation.
