In the first part of this note we argue that ten dimensional consistency requirements in the form of a certain tadpole cancellation condition can be satisfied by KKLT type vacua of type IIB string theory. We explain that a new term of non-local nature is generated dynamically once supersymmetry is broken and ensures cancellation of the tadpole. It can be interpreted as the stress caused by the restoring force that the stabilization mechanism exerts on the volume modulus. In the second part, we explain that it is surprisingly difficult to engineer sufficiently long warped throats to prevent decompactification which are also small enough in size to fit into the bulk Calabi-Yau (CY). We give arguments that achieving this with reasonable amount of control may not be possible in generic CY compactifications while CYs with very non-generic geometrical properties might evade our conclusion.

It was shown in arXiv:1808.09428 that the modified 4d version of the KKLT model proposed in arXiv:1707.08678 is inconsistent for large values of the parameter $c$ advocated in arXiv:1707.08678, since there is a point in the moduli space where $|D_SW|^2$ vanishes. The authors responded with yet another modification of the 4d KKLT model arXiv:1809.06618. However, for large $c$, this model suffers from an even worse problem: not only is there a point in the moduli space where $|D_SW|^2$ vanishes, there is also a region in the moduli space where $|D_SW|^2$ is negative. Meanwhile for small $c$ these models have dS vacua. We construct improved models, which are fully consistent for all values of parameters, just as the original version of the KKLT model using a nilpotent superfield. These models have a family of dS vacua for a broad range of parameter values. Thus, the results of the analysis of all presently available consistent generalizations of the 4d KKLT model, in the domain of their validity, confirm the existence of dS vacua in the KKLT scenario.
We propose a combined mechanism to realize both winding inflation and de Sitter uplifts. We realize the necessary structure of competing terms in the scalar potential not via tuning the vacuum expectation values of the complex structure moduli, but by a hierarchy of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefold. To show that Calabi-Yau threefolds with the prescribed hierarchy actually exist, we explicitly create a database of all the genus $0$ Gopakumar-Vafa invariants up to total degree $10$ for all the complete intersection Calabi-Yaus up to Picard number $9$. As a side product, we also identify all the redundancies present in the CICY list, up to Picard number $13$. Both databases can be accessed at this link: https://www.desy.de/~westphal/GV_CICY_webpage/GVInvariants.html .
We study finite temperature correlation functions and quasinormal modes in a strongly coupled conformal field theory holographically dual to a small black hole in global Anti-de Sitter spacetime. Upon variation of the black hole radius, our results smoothly interpolate between known limits corresponding to large black holes and thermal AdS space. This implies that the quantities are continuous functions of energy density in the microcanonical ensemble, thus smoothly connecting the deconfined and confined phases that are separated by a first order phase transition in the canonical description.
We present a non-supersymmetric theory with a naturally light dilaton. It is based on a 5D holographic description of a conformal theory perturbed by a close-to-marginal operator of dimension 4-epsilon, which develops a condensate. As long as the dimension of the perturbing operator remains very close to marginal (even for large couplings) a stable minimum at hierarchically small scales is achieved, where the dilaton mass squared is suppressed by epsilon. At the same time the cosmological constant in this sector is also suppressed by epsilon, and thus parametrically smaller than in a broken SUSY theory. As a byproduct we also present an exact solution to the scalar-gravity system that can be interpreted as a new holographic realization of spontaneously broken conformal symmetry. Even though this metric deviates substantially from AdS space in the deep IR it still describes a non-linearly realized exactly conformal theory. We also display the effective potential for the dilaton for arbitrary holographic backgrounds.
We construct a vacuum of string theory in which the magnitude of the vacuum energy is $< 10^{-123}$ in Planck units. Regrettably, the sign of the vacuum energy is negative, and some supersymmetry remains unbroken.
