Cognitive dissonance is the stress that comes from holding two conflicting thoughts simultaneously in the mind, usually arising when people are asked to choose between two detrimental or two beneficial options. In view of the well-established role of emotions in decision making, here we investigate whether the conventional structural models used to represent the relationships among basic emotions, such as the Circumplex model of affect, can describe the emotions of cognitive dissonance as well. We presented a questionnaire to 34 anonymous participants, where each question described a decision to be made among two conflicting motivations and asked the participants to rate analogically the pleasantness and the intensity of the experienced emotion. We found that the results were compatible with the predictions of the Circumplex model for basic emotions.
Anatomical connectivity imposes strong constraints on brain function, but there is no general agreement about principles that govern its organization. Based on extensive quantitative data we tested the power of three models to predict connections of the primate cerebral cortex: architectonic similarity (structural model), spatial proximity (distance model) and thickness similarity (thickness model). Architectonic similarity showed the strongest and most consistent influence on connection features. This parameter was strongly associated with the presence or absence of inter-areal connections and when integrated with spatial distance, the model allowed predicting the existence of projections with very high accuracy. Moreover, architectonic similarity was strongly related to the laminar pattern of projections origins, and the absolute number of cortical connections of an area. By contrast, cortical thickness similarity and distance were not systematically related to connection features. These findings suggest that cortical architecture provides a general organizing principle for connections in the primate brain.
Intracranial recordings in epilepsy patients are increasingly utilized to gain insight into the electrophysiological mechanisms of human cognition. There are currently several practical limitations to conducting research with these patients, including patient and researcher availability and the cognitive abilities of patients, which limit the amount of task-related data that can be collected. Prior studies have synchronized clinical audio, video, and neural recordings to understand naturalistic behaviors, but these recordings are centered on the patient to understand their seizure semiology and thus do not capture and synchronize audiovisual stimuli from tasks. Here, we describe a platform for cognitive monitoring of neurosurgical patients during their hospitalization that benefits both patients and researchers alike. We provide the full specifications for this system and describe some example use cases in perception, memory, and sleep research. Our system opens up new avenues to collect more data per patient using real-world tasks, affording new possibilities to conduct longitudinal studies of the electrophysiological basis of human cognition under naturalistic conditions.
We propose a single chunk model of long-term memory that combines the basic features of the ACT-R theory and the multiple trace memory architecture. The pivot point of the developed theory is a mathematical description of the creation of new memory traces caused by learning a certain fragment of information pattern and affected by the fragments of this pattern already retained by the current moment of time. Using the available psychological and physiological data these constructions are justified. The final equation governing the learning and forgetting processes is constructed in the form of the differential equation with the Caputo type fractional time derivative. Several characteristic situations of the learning (continuous and discontinuous) and forgetting processes are studied numerically. In particular, it is demonstrated that, first, the learning and forgetting exponents of the corresponding power laws of the memory fractional dynamics should be regarded as independent system parameters. Second, as far as the spacing effects are concerned, the longer the discontinuous learning process, the longer the time interval within which a subject remembers the information without its considerable lost. Besides, the latter relationship is a linear proportionality.
Science strives for a detailed understanding of reality even if this differentiation threatens individual synthesis, or the wholeness of psyche. Religion strives to maintain the wholeness of psyche, even if at the expense of a detailed understanding of the world and Self. This paper analyzes the cognitive forces driving us to achieve both. This analysis leads to understanding emotions of the religiously sublime, which are the foundations of all religions. These seemingly mysterious feelings, which everyone feels, even if rarely, even if without noticing them consciously, even if without being able to name them properly, today can be explained scientifically. And possibly, we may soon be able to measure them in a psychological laboratory. The article briefly reviews new developments in brain imaging that have made new data available, and reviews development and mathematical modeling in cognitive theory explaining these previously mysterious feelings. This new scientific analysis has overcome another long-standing challenge: reductionism. Although religious feelings can be scientifically discussed in terms of concrete neural mechanisms and mathematically modeled, but cannot be reduced to just this or that mechanical explanation.
Mathematical approaches to modeling the mind since the 1950s are reviewed. Difficulties faced by these approaches are related to the fundamental incompleteness of logic discovered by K. Godel. A recent mathematical advancement, dynamic logic (DL) overcame these past difficulties. DL is described conceptually and related to neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy. DL models higher cognitive functions: concepts, emotions, instincts, understanding, imagination, intuition, consciousness. DL is related to the knowledge instinct that drives our understanding of the world and serves as a foundation for higher cognitive functions. Aesthetic emotions and perception of beauty are related to everyday functioning of the mind. The article reviews mechanisms of human symbolic ability, language and cognition, joint evolution of the mind, consciousness, and cultures. It touches on a manifold of aesthetic emotions in music, their cognitive function, origin, and evolution. The article concentrates on elucidating the first principles and reviews aspects of the theory proven in laboratory research.
