A new technique is introduced to reconstruct a nonlinear stochastic model of the cardiorespiratory interaction. Its inferential framework uses a set of polynomial basis functions representing the nonlinear force governing the system oscillations. The strength and direction of coupling, and the noise intensity are simultaneously inferred from a univariate blood pressure signal, monitored in a clinical environment. The technique does not require extensive global optimization and it is applicable to a wide range of complex dynamical systems subject to noise.

We present a Bayesian dynamical inference method for characterizing cardiorespiratory (CR) dynamics in humans by inverse modelling from blood pressure time-series data. This new method is applicable to a broad range of stochastic dynamical models, and can be implemented without severe computational demands. A simple nonlinear dynamical model is found that describes a measured blood pressure time-series in the primary frequency band of the CR dynamics. The accuracy of the method is investigated using surrogate data with parameters close to the parameters inferred in the experiment. The connection of the inferred model to a well-known beat-to-beat model of the baroreflex is discussed.
A new method of inferencing of coupled stochastic nonlinear oscillators is described. The technique does not require extensive global optimization, provides optimal compensation for noise-induced errors and is robust in a broad range of dynamical models. We illustrate the main ideas of the technique by inferencing a model of five globally and locally coupled noisy oscillators. Specific modifications of the technique for inferencing hidden degrees of freedom of coupled nonlinear oscillators is discussed in the context of physiological applications.
An efficient technique is introduced for model inference of complex nonlinear dynamical systems driven by noise. The technique does not require extensive global optimization, provides optimal compensation for noise-induced errors and is robust in a broad range %of parameters of dynamical models. It is applied to clinically measured blood pressure signal for the simultaneous inference of the strength, directionality, and the noise intensities in the nonlinear interaction between the cardiac and respiratory oscillations.
Bayesian inference is a widely used and powerful analytical technique in fields such as astronomy and particle physics but has historically been underutilized in some other disciplines including semiconductor devices. In this work, we introduce Bayesim, a Python package that utilizes adaptive grid sampling to efficiently generate a probability distribution over multiple input parameters to a forward model using a collection of experimental measurements. We discuss the implementation choices made in the code, showcase two examples in photovoltaics, and discuss general prerequisites for the approach to apply to other systems.
Variational Bayes (VB) has been used to facilitate the calculation of the posterior distribution in the context of Bayesian inference of the parameters of nonlinear models from data. Previously an analytical formulation of VB has been derived for nonlinear model inference on data with additive gaussian noise as an alternative to nonlinear least squares. Here a stochastic solution is derived that avoids some of the approximations required of the analytical formulation, offering a solution that can be more flexibly deployed for nonlinear model inference problems. The stochastic VB solution was used for inference on a biexponential toy case and the algorithmic parameter space explored, before being deployed on real data from a magnetic resonance imaging study of perfusion. The new method was found to achieve comparable parameter recovery to the analytic solution and be competitive in terms of computational speed despite being reliant on sampling.
