LaVO$_3$ (LVO) has been proposed as a promising material for photovoltaics because its strongly correlated textit{d} electrons can facilitate the creation of multiple electron-hole pairs per incoming photon, which would lead to increased device efficiency. In this study, we intentionally grow off-stoichiometric LVO films by changing the growth conditions such as laser fluence. Our aim is to study how deviating La:V stoichiometries affect the electronic properties of LVO thin films. We find that the off-stoichiometry clearly alters the physical properties of the films. Structural characterization shows that both La-rich and V-rich films have different levels of structural distortion, with La-rich (V-rich) films showing a larger (smaller) out-of-plane lattice parameter compared to what one would expect from epitaxial strain effects alone. Both types of films show deviation from the behavior of bulk LVO in optical measurement, i.e., they do not show signatures of the expected long range orbital order, which can be a result of the structural distortions or the presence of structural domains. In transport measurements, La-rich films display clear signatures of electronic phase separation accompanying a temperature induced metal-insulator transition, while V-rich films behave as Mott insulators. The out-of-plane lattice parameter plays a crucial role in determining the transport properties, as the crossover from Mott-insulating to disorder-induced phase-separated behavior occurs around a lattice parameter value of 3.96 $overset{circ}{mathrm{A}}$, quite different from what has been previously reported.

While structure refinement is routinely achieved for simple bulk materials, the accurate structural determination still poses challenges for thin films due on the one hand to the small amount of material deposited on the thicker substrate and, on the other hand, to the intricate epitaxial relationships that substantially complicate standard X-ray diffraction analysis. Using a combined approach, we analyze the crystal structure of epitaxial LaVO$_3$ thin films grown on (100)-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the thin films are epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ and points to the presence of 90$^{circ}$ oriented domains. The mapping of the reciprocal space obtained by high resolution X-ray diffraction permits refinement of the lattice parameters. We finally deduce that strain accommodation imposes a monoclinic structure onto the LaVO$_3$ film. The reciprocal space maps are numerically processed and the extracted data computed to refine the atomic positions, which are compared to those obtained using precession electron diffraction tomography. We discuss the obtained results and our methodological approach as a promising thin film structure determination for complex systems.
We have grown epitaxial thin films of multiferroic BiMnO$_3$ using pulsed laser deposition. The films were grown on SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates by ablating a Bi-rich target. Using x-ray diffraction we confirmed that the films were epitaxial and the stoichiometry of the films was confirmed using Auger electron spectroscopy. The films have a ferromagnetic Curie temperature ($T_C$) of 85$pm$5 K and a saturation magnetization of 1 $mu_B$/Mn. The electric polarization as a function of electric field ($P-E$) was measured using an interdigital capacitance geometry. The $P-E$ plot shows a clear hysteresis that confirms the multiferroic nature of the thin films.
5d transition-metal-based oxides display emergent phenomena due to the competition between the relevant energy scales of the correlation, bandwidth, and most importantly, the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Starting from the prediction of novel oxide topological insulators in bilayer ABO3 (B = 5d elements) thin-film grown along the (111) direction, 5d-based perovskites (Pv) form a new paradigm in the thin-film community. Here, we reviewed the scientific accomplishments in Pv-SrIrO3 thin films, a popular candidate for observing non-trivial topological phenomena. Although the predicted topological phenomena are unknown, the Pv-SrIrO3 thin film shows many emergent properties due to the delicate interplay between its various degrees of freedom. These observations provide new physical insight and encourage further research on the design of new 5d-based heterostructures or superlattices for the observation of the hidden topological quantum phenomena in strong spin-orbit coupled oxides.
The growth and characterization of epitaxial Co3O4(111) films grown by oxygen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on single crystalline a-Al2O3(0001) is reported. The Co3O4(111) grows single crystalline with the epitaxial relation Co3O4(111)[-12-1]||a-Al2O3(0001)[10-10], as determined from in situ electron diffraction. Film stoichiometry is confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while ex situ x-ray diffraction measurements show that the Co3O4 films are fully relaxed. Post-growth annealing induces significant modifications in the film morphology, including a sharper Co3O4/a-Al2O3 interface and improved surface crystallinity, as shown by x-ray reflectometry, atomic force microscopy and electron diffraction measurements. Despite being polar, the surface of both as-grown and annealed Co3O4(111) films are (1 * 1), which can be explained in terms of inversion in the surface spinel structure.
We present THz measurements of thin films of mixed-valent YbAl$_3$ and its structural analogue LuAl$_3$. Combined with traditional Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the extended Drude formalism is utilized to study the low-frequency transport of these materials. We find that LuAl$_3$ demonstrates conventional Drude transport whereas at low temperatures YbAl$_3$ demonstrates a sharply renormalized Drude peak and a mid-infrared (MIR) peak in the conductivity, indicative of the formation of a heavy Fermi liquid. In YbAl$_3$ the extended Drude framework shows a consistency of the scattering rate with Fermi-liquid behavior below $T < 40$ K and a moderate mass enhancement. While a $omega^2$ Fermi liquid-like frequency dependence is not clearly exhibited, the temperature dependence of the Drude scattering rate and effective mass is consistent with the formation of a low-temperature moderately heavy Fermi liquid, albeit one with a smaller mass than observed in single crystals. The extended Drude analysis also supports a slow crossover between the Fermi liquid state and the normal state in YbAl$_3$.
