We consider confinement of Dirac fermions in $AB$-stacked bilayer graphene by inhomogeneous on-site interactions, (pseudo-)magnetic field or inter-layer interaction. Working within the framework of four-band approximation, we focus on the systems where the stationary equation is reducible into two stationary equations with $2times2$ Dirac-type Hamiltonians and auxiliary interactions. We show that it is possible to find localized states by solving an effective Schrodinger equation with energy-dependent potential. We consider several scenarios where bilayer graphene is subject to inhomogneous (pseudo-)magnetic field, on-site interactions or inter-layer coupling. In explicit examples, we provide analytical solutions for the states localized by local fluctuations or periodicity defects of the interactions.

We present a full derivation of the interaction Hamiltonian for holes in Silicon within the six-band envelope-function scheme, which appropriately describes the valence band close to the $boldsymbol{Gamma}$ point. The full structure of the single-hole eigenstates is taken into account, including the Bloch part, and the scattering processes caused by the Coulomb interaction are shown to be both intraband and interband; the interband terms are mostly short-ranged. In the asymptotic long-range limit, the effective potential tends to the screened Coulomb potential, and becomes purely intraband, as assumed in previous models. Our findings can be directly used for realistic exact-diagonalization calculations related to systems of interacting holes in Silicon nanostructures, such as quantum dots.
Vertical plasmonic coupling in double-layer graphene leads to two hybridized plasmonic modes: optical and acoustic plasmons with symmetric and anti-symmetric charge distributions across the interlayer gap, respectively. However, in most experiments based on far-field excitation, only the optical plasmons are dominantly excited in the double-layer graphene systems. Here, we propose strategies to selectively and efficiently excite acoustic plasmons with a single or multiple nano-emitters. The analytical model developed here elucidates the role of the position and arrangement of the emitters on the symmetry of the resulting graphene plasmons. We present an optimal device structure to enable experimental observation of acoustic plasmons in double-layer graphene toward the ultimate level of plasmonic confinement defined by a monoatomic spacer, which is inaccesible with a graphene-on-a-mirror architecture.

Interaction driven integer quantum Hall effects are anticipated in graphene bilayers because of the near-degeneracy of the eight Landau levels which appear near the neutral system Fermi level. We predict that an intra-Landau-level cyclotron resonance signal will appear at some odd-integer filling factors, accompanied by collective modes which are nearly gapless and have approximate $k^{3/2}$ dispersion. We speculate on the possibility of unususal localization physics associated with these modes.
The Josephson effect is one of the most studied macroscopic quantum phenomena in condensed matter physics and has been an essential part of the quantum technologies development over the last decades. It is already used in many applications such as magnetometry, metrology, quantum computing, detectors or electronic refrigeration. However, developing devices in which the induced superconductivity can be monitored, both spatially and in its magnitude, remains a serious challenge. In this work, we have used local gates to control confinement, amplitude and density profile of the supercurrent induced in one-dimensional nanoscale constrictions, defined in bilayer graphene-hexagonal boron nitride van der Waals heterostructures. The combination of resistance gate maps, out-of-equilibrium transport, magnetic interferometry measurements, analytical and numerical modelling enables us to explore highly tunable superconducting weak links. Our study opens the path way to design more complex superconducting circuits based on this principle such as electronic interferometers or transition-edge sensors.
The effects of the long range electrostatic interaction in twisted bilayer graphene are described using the Hartree-Fock approximation. The results show a significant dependence of the band widths and shapes on electron filling, and the existence of broken symmetry phases at many densities, either valley/spin polarized, with broken sublattice symmetry, or both.
