Much of the recent literature on automatic speech recognition (ASR) is taking an end-to-end approach. Unlike English where the writing system is closely related to sound, Chinese characters (Hanzi) represent meaning, not sound. We propose factoring audio -> Hanzi into two sub-tasks: (1) audio -> Pinyin and (2) Pinyin -> Hanzi, where Pinyin is a system of phonetic transcription of standard Chinese. Factoring the audio -> Hanzi task in this way achieves 3.9% CER (character error rate) on the Aishell-1 corpus, the best result reported on this dataset so far.

Modeling code-switched speech is an important problem in automatic speech recognition (ASR). Labeled code-switched data are rare, so monolingual data are often used to model code-switched speech. These monolingual data may be more closely matched to one of the languages in the code-switch pair. We show that such asymmetry can bias prediction toward the better-matched language and degrade overall model performance. To address this issue, we propose a semi-supervised approach for code-switched ASR. We consider the case of English-Mandarin code-switching, and the problem of using monolingual data to build bilingual transcription models for annotation of unlabeled code-switched data. We first build multiple transcription models so that their individual predictions are variously biased toward either English or Mandarin. We then combine these biased transcriptions using confidence-based selection. This strategy generates a superior transcript for semi-supervised training, and obtains a 19% relative improvement compared to a semi-supervised system that relies on a transcription model built with only the best-matched monolingual data.

Spoken dialogue systems such as Siri and Alexa provide great convenience to peoples everyday life. However, current spoken language understanding (SLU) pipelines largely depend on automatic speech recognition (ASR) modules, which require a large amount of language-specific training data. In this paper, we propose a Transformer-based SLU system that works directly on phones. This acoustic-based SLU system consists of only two blocks and does not require the presence of ASR module. The first block is a universal phone recognition system, and the second block is a Transformer-based language model for phones. We verify the effectiveness of the system on an intent classification dataset in Mandarin Chinese.
Language understanding in speech-based systems have attracted much attention in recent years with the growing demand for voice interface applications. However, the robustness of natural language understanding (NLU) systems to errors introduced by automatic speech recognition (ASR) is under-examined. %To facilitate the research on ASR-robust general language understanding, In this paper, we propose ASR-GLUE benchmark, a new collection of 6 different NLU tasks for evaluating the performance of models under ASR error across 3 different levels of background noise and 6 speakers with various voice characteristics. Based on the proposed benchmark, we systematically investigate the effect of ASR error on NLU tasks in terms of noise intensity, error type and speaker variants. We further purpose two ways, correction-based method and data augmentation-based method to improve robustness of the NLU systems. Extensive experimental results and analysises show that the proposed methods are effective to some extent, but still far from human performance, demonstrating that NLU under ASR error is still very challenging and requires further research.
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems in the medical domain that focus on transcribing clinical dictations and doctor-patient conversations often pose many challenges due to the complexity of the domain. ASR output typically undergoes automatic punctuation to enable users to speak naturally, without having to vocalise awkward and explicit punctuation commands, such as period, add comma or exclamation point, while truecasing enhances user readability and improves the performance of downstream NLP tasks. This paper proposes a conditional joint modeling framework for prediction of punctuation and truecasing using pretrained masked language models such as BERT, BioBERT and RoBERTa. We also present techniques for domain and task specific adaptation by fine-tuning masked language models with medical domain data. Finally, we improve the robustness of the model against common errors made in ASR by performing data augmentation. Experiments performed on dictation and conversational style corpora show that our proposed model achieves ~5% absolute improvement on ground truth text and ~10% improvement on ASR outputs over baseline models under F1 metric.
Quality of data plays an important role in most deep learning tasks. In the speech community, transcription of speech recording is indispensable. Since the transcription is usually generated artificially, automatically finding errors in manual transcriptions not only saves time and labors but benefits the performance of tasks that need the training process. Inspired by the success of hybrid automatic speech recognition using both language model and acoustic model, two approaches of automatic error detection in the transcriptions have been explored in this work. Previous study using a biased language model approach, relying on a strong transcription-dependent language model, has been reviewed. In this work, we propose a novel acoustic model based approach, focusing on the phonetic sequence of speech. Both methods have been evaluated on a completely real dataset, which was originally transcribed with errors and strictly corrected manually afterwards.
