This paper addresses the task of unsupervised video multi-object segmentation. Current approaches follow a two-stage paradigm: 1) detect object proposals using pre-trained Mask R-CNN, and 2) conduct generic feature matching for temporal association using re-identification techniques. However, the generic features, widely used in both stages, are not reliable for characterizing unseen objects, leading to poor generalization. To address this, we introduce a novel approach for more accurate and efficient spatio-temporal segmentation. In particular, to address textbf{instance discrimination}, we propose to combine foreground region estimation and instance grouping together in one network, and additionally introduce temporal guidance for segmenting each frame, enabling more accurate object discovery. For textbf{temporal association}, we complement current video object segmentation architectures with a discriminative appearance model, capable of capturing more fine-grained target-specific information. Given object proposals from the instance discrimination network, three essential strategies are adopted to achieve accurate segmentation: 1) target-specific tracking using a memory-augmented appearance model; 2) target-agnostic verification to trace possible tracklets for the proposal; 3) adaptive memory updating using the verified segments. We evaluate the proposed approach on DAVIS$_{17}$ and YouTube-VIS, and the results demonstrate that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods both in segmentation accuracy and inference speed.

In this paper, we introduce a novel network, called discriminative feature network (DFNet), to address the unsupervised video object segmentation task. To capture the inherent correlation among video frames, we learn discriminative features (D-features) from the input images that reveal feature distribution from a global perspective. The D-features are then used to establish correspondence with all features of test image under conditional random field (CRF) formulation, which is leveraged to enforce consistency between pixels. The experiments verify that DFNet outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin with a mean IoU score of 83.4% and ranks first on the DAVIS-2016 leaderboard while using much fewer parameters and achieving much more efficient performance in the inference phase. We further evaluate DFNet on the FBMS dataset and the video saliency dataset ViSal, reaching a new state-of-the-art. To further demonstrate the generalizability of our framework, DFNet is also applied to the image object co-segmentation task. We perform experiments on a challenging dataset PASCAL-VOC and observe the superiority of DFNet. The thorough experiments verify that DFNet is able to capture and mine the underlying relations of images and discover the common foreground objects.

Multi-instance video object segmentation is to segment specific instances throughout a video sequence in pixel level, given only an annotated first frame. In this paper, we implement an effective fully convolutional networks with U-Net similar structure built on top of OSVOS fine-tuned layer. We use instance isolation to transform this multi-instance segmentation problem into binary labeling problem, and use weighted cross entropy loss and dice coefficient loss as our loss function. Our best model achieves F mean of 0.467 and J mean of 0.424 on DAVIS dataset, which is a comparable performance with the State-of-the-Art approach. But case analysis shows this model can achieve a smoother contour and better instance coverage, meaning it better for recall focused segmentation scenario. We also did experiments on other convolutional neural networks, including Seg-Net, Mask R-CNN, and provide insightful comparison and discussion.

In this paper, we present a unified, end-to-end trainable spatiotemporal CNN model for VOS, which consists of two branches, i.e., the temporal coherence branch and the spatial segmentation branch. Specifically, the temporal coherence branch pretrained in an adversarial fashion from unlabeled video data, is designed to capture the dynamic appearance and motion cues of video sequences to guide object segmentation. The spatial segmentation branch focuses on segmenting objects accurately based on the learned appearance and motion cues. To obtain accurate segmentation results, we design a coarse-to-fine process to sequentially apply a designed attention module on multi-scale feature maps, and concatenate them to produce the final prediction. In this way, the spatial segmentation branch is enforced to gradually concentrate on object regions. These two branches are jointly fine-tuned on video segmentation sequences in an end-to-end manner. Several experiments are carried out on three challenging datasets (i.e., DAVIS-2016, DAVIS-2017 and Youtube-Object) to show that our method achieves favorable performance against the state-of-the-arts. We propose a self-supervised spatio-temporal matching method coined Motion-Aware Mask Propagation (MAMP) for semi-supervised video object segmentation. During training, MAMP leverages the frame reconstruction task to train the model without the need for annotations. During inference, MAMP extracts high-resolution features from each frame to build a memory bank from the features as well as the predicted masks of selected past frames. MAMP then propagates the masks from the memory bank to subsequent frames according to our motion-aware spatio-temporal matching module, also proposed in this paper. Evaluation on DAVIS-2017 and YouTube-VOS datasets show that MAMP achieves state-of-the-art performance with stronger generalization ability compared to existing self-supervised methods, i.e. 4.9% higher mean $mathcal{J}&mathcal{F}$ on DAVIS-2017 and 4.85% higher mean $mathcal{J}&mathcal{F}$ on the unseen categories of YouTube-VOS than the nearest competitor. Moreover, MAMP performs on par with many supervised video object segmentation methods. Our code is available at: url{https://github.com/bo-miao/MAMP}.
Conventional video inpainting is neither object-oriented nor occlusion-aware, making it liable to obvious artifacts when large occluded object regions are inpainted. This paper presents occlusion-aware video object inpainting, which recovers both the complete shape and appearance for occluded objects in videos given their visible mask segmentation. To facilitate this new research, we construct the first large-scale video object inpainting benchmark YouTube-VOI to provide realistic occlusion scenarios with both occluded and visible object masks available. Our technical contribution VOIN jointly performs video object shape completion and occluded texture generation. In particular, the shape completion module models long-range object coherence while the flow completion module recovers accurate flow with sharp motion boundary, for propagating temporally-consistent texture to the same moving object across frames. For more realistic results, VOIN is optimized using both T-PatchGAN and a new spatio-temporal attention-based multi-class discriminator. Finally, we compare VOIN and strong baselines on YouTube-VOI. Experimental results clearly demonstrate the efficacy of our method including inpainting complex and dynamic objects. VOIN degrades gracefully with inaccurate input visible mask.
