Motivated by the desire to understand chaos in the $S$-matrix of string theory, we study tree level scattering amplitudes involving highly excited strings. While the amplitudes for scattering of light strings have been a hallmark of string theory since its early days, scattering of excited strings has been far less studied. Recent results on black hole chaos, combined with the correspondence principle between black holes and strings, suggest that the amplitudes have a rich structure. We review the procedure by which an excited string is formed by repeatedly scattering photons off of an initial tachyon (the DDF formalism). We compute the scattering amplitude of one arbitrary excited string and any number of tachyons in bosonic string theory. At high energies and high mass excited state these amplitudes are determined by a saddle-point in the integration over the positions of the string vertex operators on the sphere (or the upper half plane), thus yielding a generalization of the scattering equations. We find a compact expression for the amplitude of an excited string decaying into two tachyons, and study its properties for a generic excited string. We find the amplitude is highly erratic as a function of both the precise excited string state and of the tachyon scattering angle relative to its polarization, a sign of chaos.
The entanglement production in bipartite quantum systems is studied for initially unentangled product eigenstates of the subsystems, which are assumed to be quantum chaotic. Based on a perturbative computation of the Schmidt eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, explicit expressions for the time-dependence of entanglement entropies, including the von Neumann entropy, are given. An appropriate re-scaling of time and the entropies by their saturation values leads a universal curve, independent of the interaction. The extension to the non-perturbative regime is performed using a recursively embedded perturbation theory to produce the full transition and the saturation values. The analytical results are found to be in good agreement with numerical results for random matrix computations and a dynamical system given by a pair of coupled kicked rotors.
We present a detailed analysis of {it excited} cosmic string solutions which possess superconducting currents. These currents can be excited inside the string core, and - if the condensate is large enough - can lead to the excitations of the Higgs field. Next to the case with global unbroken symmetry, we discuss also the effects of the gauging of this symmetry and show that excited condensates persist when coupled to an electromagnetic field. The space-time of such strings is also constructed by solving the Einstein equations numerically and we show how the local scalar curvature is modified by the excitation. We consider the relevance of our results on the cosmic string network evolution as well as observations of primordial gravitational waves and cosmic rays.
Quantized, compact graphs were shown to be excellent paradigms for quantum chaos in bounded systems. Connecting them with leads to infinity we show that they display all the features which characterize scattering systems with an underlying classical chaotic dynamics. We derive exact expressions for the scattering matrix, and an exact trace formula for the density of resonances, in terms of classical orbits, analogous to the semiclassical theory of chaotic scattering. A statistical analysis of the cross sections and resonance parameters compares well with the predictions of Random Matrix Theory. Hence, this system is proposed as a convenient tool to study the generic behavior of chaotic scattering systems, and their semiclassical description.
We study the motion of a string in the background of Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, in both AdS as well as asymptotically flat spacetimes. We describe the phase space of this dynamical system through largest Lyapunov exponent, Poincare sections and basins of attractions. We observe that string motion in these settings is particularly chaotic and comment on its characteristics.
We study chaotic motion of classical closed strings in the five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) soliton spacetime. We first revisit classical chaos using a cohomogeneity-1 string ansatz. We then consider turbulent behaviors of the classical strings when the spatial dependence of the string world-sheet is included. Sensitivity to initial conditions in chaotic systems suggests that the string under chaos tends to stretch in the AdS soliton spacetime in a Lyapunov timescale. In this process, the orbital angular momentum transfers to internal spin due to the turbulence on the string. It follows that the string stays around the tip of the AdS soliton with a jumbled profile. We evaluate the spectra of conserved quantities and discuss their universal power-law scalings in the turbulent behaviors.
