Agile attitude maneuvering maximizes the utility of remote sensing satellite constellations. By taking into account a satellites physical properties and its actuator specifications, we may leverage the full performance potential of the attitude control system to conduct agile remote sensing beyond conventional slew-and-stabilize maneuvers. Employing a constellation of agile satellites, coordinated by an autonomous and responsive scheduler, can significantly increase overall response rate, revisit time and global coverage for the mission. In this paper, we use recent advances in sequential convex programming based trajectory optimization to enable rapid-target acquisition, pointing and tracking capabilities for a scheduler-based constellation. We present two problem formulations. The Minimum-Time Slew Optimal Control Problem determines the minimum time, required energy, and optimal trajectory to slew between any two orientations given nonlinear quaternion kinematics, gyrostat and actuator dynamics, and state/input constraints. By gridding the space of 3D rotations and efficiently solving this problem on the grid, we produce lookup tables or parametric fits off-line that can then be used on-line by a scheduler to compute accurate estimates of minimum-time and maneuver energy for real-time constellation scheduling. The Minimum-Effort Multi-Target Pointing Optimal Control Problem is used on-line by each satellite to produce continuous attitude-state and control-input trajectories that realize a given schedule while minimizing attitude error and control effort. The optimal trajectory may then be achieved by a low-level tracking controller. We demonstrate our approach with an example of a reference satellite in Sun-synchronous orbit passing over globally-distributed, Earth-observation targets.
Emerging transportation technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to improve the efficiency of the transportation system from the perspectives of energy consumption, congestion, and emissions. One of these technologies is connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). With the prospective duality of operations of CAVs and human driven vehicles in the same roadway space (also referred to as a mixed stream), CAVs are expected to address a variety of traffic problems particularly those that are either caused or exacerbated by the heterogeneous nature of human driving. In efforts to realize such specific benefits of CAVs in mixed-stream traffic, it is essential to understand and simulate the behavior of human drivers in such environments, and microscopic traffic flow (MTF) models can be used to carry out this task. By helping to comprehend the fundamental dynamics of traffic flow, MTF models serve as a powerful approach to assess the impacts of such flow in terms of safety, stability, and efficiency. In this paper, we seek to calibrate MTF models based on empirical trajectory data as basis of not only understanding traffic dynamics such as traffic instabilities, but ultimately using CAVs to mitigate stop-and-go wave propagation. The paper therefore duly considers the heterogeneity and uncertainty associated with human driving behavior in order to calibrate the dynamics of each HDV. Also, the paper designs the CAV controllers based on the microscopic HDV models that are calibrated in real time. The data for the calibration is from the Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) trajectory datasets. The results are encouraging, as they indicate the efficacy of the designed controller to significantly improve not only the stability of the mixed traffic stream but also the safety of both CAVs and HDVs in the traffic stream.
Iterative trajectory optimization techniques for non-linear dynamical systems are among the most powerful and sample-efficient methods of model-based reinforcement learning and approximate optimal control. By leveraging time-variant local linear-quadratic approximations of system dynamics and reward, such methods can find both a target-optimal trajectory and time-variant optimal feedback controllers. However, the local linear-quadratic assumptions are a major source of optimization bias that leads to catastrophic greedy updates, raising the issue of proper regularization. Moreover, the approximate models disregard for any physical state-action limits of the system causes further aggravation of the problem, as the optimization moves towards unreachable areas of the state-action space. In this paper, we address the issue of constrained systems in the scenario of online-fitted stochastic linear dynamics. We propose modeling state and action physical limits as probabilistic chance constraints linear in both state and action and introduce a new trajectory optimization technique that integrates these probabilistic constraints by optimizing a relaxed quadratic program. Our empirical evaluations show a significant improvement in learning robustness, which enables our approach to perform more effective updates and avoid premature convergence observed in state-of-the-art algorithms.
Autonomous vehicles usually consume a large amount of computational power for their operations, especially for the tasks of sensing and perception with artificial intelligence algorithms. Such a computation may not only cost a significant amount of energy but also cause performance issues when the onboard computational resources are limited. To address this issue, this paper proposes an adaptive optimization method to online allocate the onboard computational resources of an autonomous vehicle amongst multiple vehicular subsystems depending on the contexts of the situations that the vehicle is facing. Different autonomous driving scenarios were designed to validate the proposed approach and the results showed that it could help improve the overall performance and energy consumption of autonomous vehicles compared to existing computational arrangement.
This paper provides an exponential stability result for the adaptive anti-unwinding attitude tracking control problem of a rigid body with uncertain but constant inertia parameters, without requiring the satisfaction of persistent excitation (PE) condition. Specifically, a composite immersion and invariance (I&I) adaptive controller is derived by integrating a prediction-error-driven learning law into the dynamically scaled I&I adaptive control framework, wherein we modify the scaling factor so that the algorithm design does not involve any dynamic gains. To avoid the unwinding problem, a barrier function is introduced as the attitude error function, along with the tactful establishment of two crucial algebra properties for exponential stability analysis. The regressor filtering method is adopted in combination with the dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM) procedure to acquire the prediction error using only easily obtainable signals. In particular, aiding by a constructive liner time-varying filter, the scalar regressor of DREM is extended to generate a new exciting counterpart. In this way, the derived controller is shown to permit closed-loop exponential stability without PE, in the sense that both output-tracking and parameter estimation errors exponentially converge to zero. Further, the composite learning law is augmented with a power term to achieve synchronized finite/fixed-time parameter convergence. Numerical simulations are performed to verify the theoretical findings.
The hand-eye measurements have recently been proven to be very efficient for spacecraft attitude determination relative to an ellipsoidal asteroid. However, recent method does not guarantee full attitude observability for all conditions. This paper refines this problem by taking the vector observations into account so that the accuracy and robustness of the spacecraft attitude estimation can be improved. The vector observations come from many sources including visual perspective geometry, optical navigation and point clouds that frequently occur in aerospace electronic systems. Completely closed-form solutions along with their uncertainty descriptions are presented for the proposed problem. Experiments using our simulated dataset and real-world spacecraft measurements from NASA dawn spacecraft verify the effectiveness and superiority of the derived solution.
