Floorplans are commonly used to represent the layout of buildings. In computer aided-design (CAD) floorplans are usually represented in the form of hierarchical graph structures. Research works towards computational techniques that facilitate the design process, such as automated analysis and optimization, often use simple floorplan representations that ignore the semantics of the space and do not take into account usage related analytics. We present a floorplan embedding technique that uses an attributed graph to represent the geometric information as well as design semantics and behavioral features of the inhabitants as node and edge attributes. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Variational Autoencoder (VAE) architecture is proposed and trained to embed attributed graphs as vectors in a continuous space. A user study is conducted to evaluate the coupling of similar floorplans retrieved from the embedding space with respect to a given input (e.g., design layout). The qualitative, quantitative and user-study evaluations show that our embedding framework produces meaningful and accurate vector representations for floorplans. In addition, our proposed model is a generative model. We studied and showcased its effectiveness for generating new floorplans. We also release the dataset that we have constructed and which, for each floorplan, includes the design semantics attributes as well as simulation generated human behavioral features for further study in the community.
Deep learning based computer vision fails to work when labeled images are scarce. Recently, Meta learning algorithm has been confirmed as a promising way to improve the ability of learning from few images for computer vision. However, previous Meta learning approaches expose problems: 1) they ignored the importance of attention mechanism for the Meta learner; 2) they didnt give the Meta learner the ability of well using the past knowledge which can help to express images into high representations, resulting in that the Meta learner has to solve few shot learning task directly from the original high dimensional RGB images. In this paper, we argue that the attention mechanism and the past knowledge are crucial for the Meta learner, and the Meta learner should be trained on high representations of the RGB images instead of directly on the original ones. Based on these arguments, we propose two methods: Attention augmented Meta Learning (AML) and Representation based and Attention augmented Meta Learning(RAML). The method AML aims to improve the Meta learners attention ability by explicitly embedding an attention model into its network. The method RAML aims to give the Meta learner the ability of leveraging the past learned knowledge to reduce the dimension of the original input data by expressing it into high representations, and help the Meta learner to perform well. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models, with state-of-the-art few shot learning performances on several few shot learning benchmarks. The source code of our proposed methods will be released soon to facilitate further studies on those aforementioned problem.
Unsupervised representation learning has recently received lots of interest due to its powerful generalizability through effectively leveraging large-scale unlabeled data. There are two prevalent approaches for this, contrastive learning and generative pre-training, where the former learns representations from instance-wise discrimination tasks and the latter learns them from estimating the likelihood. These seemingly orthogonal approaches have their own strengths and weaknesses. Contrastive learning tends to extract semantic information and discards details irrelevant for classifying objects, making the representations effective for discriminative tasks while degrading robustness to out-of-distribution data. On the other hand, the generative pre-training directly estimates the data distribution, so the representations tend to be robust but not optimal for discriminative tasks. In this paper, we show that we could achieve the best of both worlds by a hybrid training scheme. Specifically, we demonstrated that a transformer-based encoder-decoder architecture trained with both contrastive and generative losses can learn highly discriminative and robust representations without hurting the generative performance. We extensively validate our approach on various tasks.
Knowledge graph (KG) representation learning methods have achieved competitive performance in many KG-oriented tasks, among which the best ones are usually based on graph neural networks (GNNs), a powerful family of networks that learns the representation of an entity by aggregating the features of its neighbors and itself. However, many KG representation learning scenarios only provide the structure information that describes the relationships among entities, causing that entities have no input features. In this case, existing aggregation mechanisms are incapable of inducing embeddings of unseen entities as these entities have no pre-defined features for aggregation. In this paper, we present a decentralized KG representation learning approach, decentRL, which encodes each entity from and only from the embeddings of its neighbors. For optimization, we design an algorithm to distill knowledge from the model itself such that the output embeddings can continuously gain knowledge from the corresponding original embeddings. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach performed better than many cutting-edge models on the entity alignment task, and achieved competitive performance on the entity prediction task. Furthermore, under the inductive setting, it significantly outperformed all baselines on both tasks.
By planning through a learned dynamics model, model-based reinforcement learning (MBRL) offers the prospect of good performance with little environment interaction. However, it is common in practice for the learned model to be inaccurate, impairing planning and leading to poor performance. This paper aims to improve planning with an importance sampling framework that accounts and corrects for discrepancy between the true and learned dynamics. This framework also motivates an alternative objective for fitting the dynamics model: to minimize the variance of value estimation during planning. We derive and implement this objective, which encourages better prediction on trajectories with larger returns. We observe empirically that our approach improves the performance of current MBRL algorithms on two stochastic control problems, and provide a theoretical basis for our method.
Recent findings in neuroscience suggest that the human brain represents information in a geometric structure (for instance, through conceptual spaces). In order to communicate, we flatten the complex representation of entities and their attributes into a single word or a sentence. In this paper we use graph convolutional networks to support the evolution of language and cooperation in multi-agent systems. Motivated by an image-based referential game, we propose a graph referential game with varying degrees of complexity, and we provide strong baseline models that exhibit desirable properties in terms of language emergence and cooperation. We show that the emerged communication protocol is robust, that the agents uncover the true factors of variation in the game, and that they learn to generalize beyond the samples encountered during training.
