The purpose of these old notes (written in 1998 during a research project on holonomy of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of type (10,1)) is to determine the orbit structure of the groups Spin(p,q) acting on their spinor spaces for the values (p,q) = (8,0), (9,0), (9,1), (10,0), (10,1), and (10,2). Im making them available on the arXiv because I continue to get requests for them as well as questions about how they can be cited.
We approach the quasi-isometric classification questions on Lie groups by considering low dimensional cases and isometries alongside quasi-isometries. First, we present some new results related to quasi-isometries between Heintze groups. Then we will see how these results together with the existing tools related to isometries can be applied to groups of dimension 4 and 5 in particular. Thus we take steps towards determining all the equivalence classes of groups up to isometry and quasi-isometry. We completely solve the classification up to isometry for simply connected solvable groups in dimension 4, and for the subclass of groups of polynomial growth in dimension 5.
This is an expository paper. Its purpose is to explain the linear algebra that underlies Donaldson-Thomas theory and the geometry of Riemannian manifolds with holonomy in $G_2$ and ${rm Spin}(7)$.
We give a short proof of the fact that if all characteristic p simple modules of the finite group G have dimension less than p, then G has a normal Sylow p-subgroup.
We consider the space of odd spinors on the circle, and a decomposition into spinors supported on either the top or on the bottom half of the circle. If an operator preserves this decomposition, and acts on the bottom half in the same way as a second operator acts on the top half, then the fusion of both operators is a third operator acting on the top half like the first, and on the bottom half like the second. Fusion restricts to the Banach Lie group of restricted orthogonal operators, which supports a central extension of implementers on a Fock space. In this article, we construct a lift of fusion to this central extension. Our construction uses Tomita-Takesaki theory for the Clifford-von Neumann algebras of the decomposed space of spinors. Our motivation is to obtain an operator-algebraic model for the basic central extension of the loop group of the spin group, on which the fusion of implementers induces a fusion product in the sense considered in the context of transgression and string geometry. In upcoming work we will use this model to construct a fusion product on a spinor bundle on the loop space of a string manifold, completing a construction proposed by Stolz and Teichner.
In a previous article we proved a lower bound for the spectrum of the Dirac operator on quaternionic Kaehler manifolds. In the present article we study the limiting case, i. e. manifolds where the lower bound is attained as an eigenvalue. We give an equivalent formulation in terms of a quaternionic Killing equation and show that the only symmetric quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with smallest possible eigenvalue are the quaternionic projective spaces.
