We report on the experimental investigation of the dependence of the elastic enhancement, i.e., enhancement of scattering in backward direction over scattering in other directions of a wave-chaotic system with partially violated time-reversal (T ) invariance on its openness. The elastic enhancement factor is a characteristic of quantum chaotic scattering which is of particular importance in experiments, like compound-nuclear reactions, where only cross sections, i.e., the moduli of the associated scattering matrix elements are accessible. In the experiment a quantum billiard with the shape of a quarter bow-tie, which generates a chaotic dynamics, is emulated by a flat microwave cavity. Partial T-invariance violation of varying strength 0 < xi < 1 is induced by two magnetized ferrites. The openness is controlled by increasing the number M of open channels, 2 < M < 9, while keeping the internal absorption unchanged. We investigate the elastic enhancement as function of xi and find that for a fixed M it decreases with increasing time-reversal invariance violation, whereas it increases with increasing openness beyond a certain value of xi > 0.2. The latter result is surprising because it is opposite to that observed in systems with preserved T invariance (xi = 0). We come to the conclusion that the effect of T -invariance violation on the elastic enhancement then dominates over the openness, which is crucial for experiments which rely on enhanced backscattering, since, generally, a decrease of the openness is unfeasible. Motivated by these experimental results we, furthermore, performed theoretical investigations based on random matrix theory which confirm our findings.

The interest in the properties of quantum systems, whose classical dynamics are chaotic, derives from their abundance in nature. The spectrum of such systems can be related, in the semiclassical approximation (SCA), to the unstable classical periodic orbits, through Gutzwillers trace formula. The class of systems studied in this work, tiling billiards on the pseudo-sphere, is special in this correspondence being exact, via Selbergs trace formula. In this work, an exact expression for Greens function (GF) and the eigenfunctions (EF) of tiling billiards on the pseudo-sphere, whose classical dynamics are chaotic, is derived. GF is shown to be equal to the quotient of two infinite sums over periodic orbits, where the denominator is the spectral determinant. Such a result is known to be true for typical chaotic systems, in the leading SCA. From the exact expression for GF, individual EF can be identified. In order to obtain a SCA by finite series for the infinite sums encountered, resummation by analytic continuation in $hbar$ was performed. The result is similar to known results for EF of typical chaotic systems. The lowest EF of the Hamiltonian were calculated with the help of the resulting formulae, and compared with exact numerical results. A search for scars with the help of analytical and numerical methods failed to find evidence for their existence.
We experimentally and numerically investigate the quantum accelerator mode dynamics of an atom optical realization of the quantum delta-kicked accelerator, whose classical dynamics are chaotic. Using a Ramsey-type experiment, we observe interference, demonstrating that quantum accelerator modes are formed coherently. We construct a link between the behavior of the evolutions fidelity and the phase space structure of a recently proposed pseudoclassical map, and thus account for the observed interference visibilities.
A realisation of a periodically driven microwave system is presented. The principal element of the scheme is a variable capacity, i.e. a varicap, introduced as an element of the resonant circuit. Sideband structures corresponding to different driving signals, have been measured experimentally. In the linear regime we observed sideband structures with specific shapes. The main peculiarities of these shapes can be explained within a semiclassical approximation. A good agreement between experimental data and theoretical expectations has been found.
We present an experimental and numerical study of missing-level statistics of chaotic three-dimensional microwave cavities. The nearest-neighbor spacing distribution, the spectral rigidity, and the power spectrum of level fluctuations were investigated. We show that the theoretical approach to a problem of incomplete spectra does not work well when the incompleteness of the spectra is caused by unresolved resonances. In such a case the fraction of missing levels can be evaluated by calculations based on random matrix theory.
The chaotic behaviour of the motion of the planets in our Solar System is well established. In this work to model a hypothetical extrasolar planetary system our Solar System was modified in such a way that we replaced the Earth by a more massive planet and let the other planets and all the orbital elements unchanged. The major result of former numerical experiments with a modified Solar System was the appearance of a chaotic window at $kappa_E in (4,6)$, where the dynamical state of the system was highly chaotic and even the body with the smallest mass escaped in some cases. On the contrary for very large values of the mass of the Earth, even greater than that of Jupiter regular dynamical behaviour was observed. In this paper the investigations are extended to the complete Solar System and showed, that this chaotic window does still exist. Tests in different Solar Systems clarified that including only Jupiter and Saturn with their actual masses together with a more massive Earth ($4 < kappa_E < 6$) perturbs the orbit of Mars so that it can even be ejected from the system. Using the results of the Laplace-Lagrange secular theory we found secular resonances acting between the motions of the nodes of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. These secular resonances give rise to strong chaos, which is the cause of the appearance of the instability window.
