The interest in the properties of quantum systems, whose classical dynamics are chaotic, derives from their abundance in nature. The spectrum of such systems can be related, in the semiclassical approximation (SCA), to the unstable classical periodic orbits, through Gutzwillers trace formula. The class of systems studied in this work, tiling billiards on the pseudo-sphere, is special in this correspondence being exact, via Selbergs trace formula. In this work, an exact expression for Greens function (GF) and the eigenfunctions (EF) of tiling billiards on the pseudo-sphere, whose classical dynamics are chaotic, is derived. GF is shown to be equal to the quotient of two infinite sums over periodic orbits, where the denominator is the spectral determinant. Such a result is known to be true for typical chaotic systems, in the leading SCA. From the exact expression for GF, individual EF can be identified. In order to obtain a SCA by finite series for the infinite sums encountered, resummation by analytic continuation in $hbar$ was performed. The result is similar to known results for EF of typical chaotic systems. The lowest EF of the Hamiltonian were calculated with the help of the resulting formulae, and compared with exact numerical results. A search for scars with the help of analytical and numerical methods failed to find evidence for their existence.

We investigate the statistical properties of the complexness parameter which characterizes uniquely complexness (biorthogonality) of resonance eigenstates of open chaotic systems. Specifying to the regime of isolated resonances, we apply the random matrix theory to the effective Hamiltonian formalism and derive analytically the probability distribution of the complexness parameter for two statistical ensembles describing the systems invariant under time reversal. For those with rigid spectra, we consider a Hamiltonian characterized by a picket-fence spectrum without spectral fluctuations. Then, in the more realistic case of a Hamiltonian described by the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble, we reveal and discuss the r^ole of spectral fluctuations.
We experimentally and numerically investigate the quantum accelerator mode dynamics of an atom optical realization of the quantum delta-kicked accelerator, whose classical dynamics are chaotic. Using a Ramsey-type experiment, we observe interference, demonstrating that quantum accelerator modes are formed coherently. We construct a link between the behavior of the evolutions fidelity and the phase space structure of a recently proposed pseudoclassical map, and thus account for the observed interference visibilities.
The multiple time scale dynamics induced by radiation pressure and photothermal effects in a high-finesse optomechanical resonator is experimentally studied. At difference with two-dimensional slow-fast systems, the transition from the quasiharmonic to the relaxational regime occurs via chaotic canard explosions, where large-amplitude relaxation spikes are separated by an irregular number of subthreshold oscillations. We also show that this regime coexists with other periodic attractors, on which the trajectories evolve on a substantially faster time scale. The experimental results are reproduced and analyzed by means of a detailed physical model of our system.

A modified non-linear time series analysis technique, which computes the correlation dimension $D_2$, is used to analyze the X-ray light curves of the black hole system GRS 1915+105 in all twelve temporal classes. For four of these temporal classes $D_2 $ saturates to $approx 4-5$ which indicates that the underlying dynamical mechanism is a low dimensional chaotic system. Of the other eight classes, three show stochastic behavior while five show deviation from randomness. The light curves for four classes which depict chaotic behavior have the smallest ratio of the expected Poisson noise to the variability ($ < 0.05$) while those for the three classes which depict stochastic behavior is the highest ($ > 0.2$). This suggests that the temporal behavior of the black hole system is governed by a low dimensional chaotic system, whose nature is detectable only when the Poisson fluctuations are much smaller than the variability.
We report on the experimental investigation of the dependence of the elastic enhancement, i.e., enhancement of scattering in backward direction over scattering in other directions of a wave-chaotic system with partially violated time-reversal (T ) invariance on its openness. The elastic enhancement factor is a characteristic of quantum chaotic scattering which is of particular importance in experiments, like compound-nuclear reactions, where only cross sections, i.e., the moduli of the associated scattering matrix elements are accessible. In the experiment a quantum billiard with the shape of a quarter bow-tie, which generates a chaotic dynamics, is emulated by a flat microwave cavity. Partial T-invariance violation of varying strength 0 < xi < 1 is induced by two magnetized ferrites. The openness is controlled by increasing the number M of open channels, 2 < M < 9, while keeping the internal absorption unchanged. We investigate the elastic enhancement as function of xi and find that for a fixed M it decreases with increasing time-reversal invariance violation, whereas it increases with increasing openness beyond a certain value of xi > 0.2. The latter result is surprising because it is opposite to that observed in systems with preserved T invariance (xi = 0). We come to the conclusion that the effect of T -invariance violation on the elastic enhancement then dominates over the openness, which is crucial for experiments which rely on enhanced backscattering, since, generally, a decrease of the openness is unfeasible. Motivated by these experimental results we, furthermore, performed theoretical investigations based on random matrix theory which confirm our findings.
