In this survey we consider mathematical models and methods recently developed to control crowd dynamics, with particular emphasis on egressing pedestrians. We focus on two control strategies: The first one consists in using special agents, called leaders, to steer the crowd towards the desired direction. Leaders can be either hidden in the crowd or recognizable as such. This strategy heavily relies on the power of the social influence (herding effect), namely the natural tendency of people to follow group mates in situations of emergency or doubt. The second one consists in modify the surrounding environment by adding in the walking area multiple obstacles optimally placed and shaped. The aim of the obstacles is to naturally force people to behave as desired. Both control strategies discussed in this paper aim at reducing as much as possible the intervention on the crowd. Ideally the natural behavior of people is kept, and people do not even realize they are being led by an external intelligence. Mathematical models are discussed at different scales of observation, showing how macroscopic (fluid-dynamic) models can be derived by mesoscopic (kinetic) models which, in turn, can be derived by microscopic (agent-based) models.
Non-linear effects in accelerator physics are important for both successful operation of accelerators and during the design stage. Since both of these aspects are closely related, they will be treated together in this overview. Some of the most important aspects are well described by methods established in other areas of physics and mathematics. The treatment will be focused on the problems in accelerators used for particle physics experiments. Although the main emphasis will be on accelerator physics issues, some of the aspects of more general interest will be discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that in recent years a framework has been built to handle the complex problems in a consistent form, technically superior and conceptually simpler than the traditional techniques. The need to understand the stability of particle beams has substantially contributed to the development of new techniques and is an important source of examples which can be verified experimentally. Unfortunately, the documentation of these developments is often poor or even unpublished, in many cases only available as lectures or conference proceedings.
The rapid spread of radical ideologies has led to a world-wide succession of terrorist attacks in recent years. Understanding how extremist tendencies germinate, develop, and drive individuals to action is important from a cultural standpoint, but also to help formulate response and prevention strategies. Demographic studies, interviews with radicalized subjects, analysis of terrorist databases, reveal that the path to radicalization occurs along progressive steps, where age, social context and peer-to-peer exchanges play major roles. To execute terrorist attacks, radicals must efficiently communicate with one another while maintaining secrecy; they are also subject to pressure from counter-terrorism agencies, public opinion and the need for material resources. Similarly, government entities must gauge which intervention methods are most effective. While a complete understanding of the processes that lead to extremism and violence, and of which deterrents are optimal, is still lacking, mathematical modelers have contributed to the discourse by using tools from statistical mechanics and applied mathematics to describe existing and novel paradigms, and to propose novel counter-terrorism strategies. We review some of their approaches in this work, including compartment models for populations of increasingly extreme views, continuous time models for age-structured radical populations, radicalization as social contagion processes on lattices and social networks, agent based models, game theoretic formulations. We highlight the useful insights offered by analyzing radicalization and terrorism through quantitative frameworks. Finally, we discuss the role of institutional intervention and the stages at which de-radicalization strategies might be most effective.
We study the derivation of generic high order macroscopic traffic models from a follow-the-leader particle description via a kinetic approach. First, we recover a third order traffic model as the hydrodynamic limit of an Enskog-type kinetic equation. Next, we introduce in the vehicle interactions a binary control modelling the automatic feedback provided by driver-assist vehicles and we upscale such a new particle description by means of another Enskog-based hydrodynamic limit. The resulting macroscopic model is now a Generic Second Order Model (GSOM), which contains in turn a control term inherited from the microscopic interactions. We show that such a control may be chosen so as to optimise global traffic trends, such as the vehicle flux or the road congestion, constrained by the GSOM dynamics. By means of numerical simulations, we investigate the effect of this control hierarchy in some specific case studies, which exemplify the multiscale path from the vehicle-wise implementation of a driver-assist control to its optimal hydrodynamic design.
In an emergency situation, imitation of strategies of neighbours can lead to an order-disorder phase transition, where spatial clusters of pedestrians adopt the same strategy. We assume that there are two strategies, cooperating and competitive, which correspond to a smaller or larger desired velocity. The results of our simulations within the Social Force Model indicate that the ordered phase can be detected as an increase of spatial order of positions of the pedestrians in the crowd.
In this paper, we begin by reviewing a certain number of mathematical challenges posed by the modelling of collective dynamics and self-organization. Then, we focus on two specific problems, first, the derivation of fluid equations from particle dynamics of collective motion and second, the study of phase transitions and the stability of the associated equilibria.
