Localization of unknown faults in industrial systems is a difficult task for data-driven diagnosis methods. The classification performance of many machine learning methods relies on the quality of training data. Unknown faults, for example faults not represented in training data, can be detected using, for example, anomaly classifiers. However, mapping these unknown faults to an actual location in the real system is a non-trivial problem. In model-based diagnosis, physical-based models are used to create residuals that isolate faults by mapping model equations to faulty system components. Developing sufficiently accurate physical-based models can be a time-consuming process. Hybrid modeling methods combining physical-based methods and machine learning is one solution to design data-driven residuals for fault isolation. In this work, a set of neural network-based residuals are designed by incorporating physical insights about the system behavior in the residual model structure. The residuals are trained using only fault-free data and a simulation case study shows that they can be used to perform fault isolation and localization of unknown faults in the system.
While neural network hardware accelerators provide a substantial amount of raw compute throughput, the models deployed on them must be co-designed for the underlying hardware architecture to obtain the optimal system performance. We present a class of computer vision models designed using hardware-aware neural architecture search and customized to run on the Edge TPU, Googles neural network hardware accelerator for low-power, edge devices. For the Edge TPU in Coral devices, these models enable real-time image classification performance while achieving accuracy typically seen only with larger, compute-heavy models running in data centers. On Pixel 4s Edge TPU, these models improve the accuracy-latency tradeoff over existing SoTA mobile models.
Road surface friction significantly impacts traffic safety and mobility. A precise road surface friction prediction model can help to alleviate the influence of inclement road conditions on traffic safety, Level of Service, traffic mobility, fuel efficiency, and sustained economic productivity. Most related previous studies are laboratory-based methods that are difficult for practical implementation. Moreover, in other data-driven methods, the demonstrated time-series features of road surface conditions have not been considered. This study employed a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural network to develop a data-driven road surface friction prediction model based on historical data. The proposed prediction model outperformed the other baseline models in terms of the lowest value of predictive performance measurements. The influence of the number of time-lags and the predicting time interval on predictive accuracy was analyzed. In addition, the influence of adding road surface water thickness, road surface temperature and air temperature on predictive accuracy also were investigated. The findings of this study can support road maintenance strategy development and decision making, thus mitigating the impact of inclement road conditions on traffic mobility and safety. Future work includes a modified LSTM-based prediction model development by accommodating flexible time intervals between time-lags.
Ischemic heart disease (IHD), particularly in its chronic stable form, is a subtle pathology due to its silent behavior before developing in unstable angina, myocardial infarction or sudden cardiac death. Machine learning techniques applied to parameters extracted form heart rate variability (HRV) signal seem to be a valuable support in the early diagnosis of some cardiac diseases. However, so far, IHD patients were identified using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) applied to a limited number of HRV parameters and only to very few subjects. In this study, we used several linear and non-linear HRV parameters applied to ANNs, in order to confirm these results on a large cohort of 965 sample of subjects and to identify which features could discriminate IHD patients with high accuracy. By using principal component analysis and stepwise regression, we reduced the original 17 parameters to five, used as inputs, for a series of ANNs. The highest accuracy of 82% was achieved using meanRR, LFn, SD1, gender and age parameters and two hidden neurons.
This paper presents a method to enhance fault isolation without adding physical sensors on a turbocharged spark ignited petrol engine system by designing additional residuals from an initial observer-based residuals setup. The best candidates from all potential additional residuals are selected using the concept of sequential residual generation to ensure best fault isolation performance for the least number of additional residuals required. A simulation testbed is used to generate realistic engine data for the design of the additional residuals and the fault isolation performance is verified using structural analysis method.
Physiological signals, such as the electrocardiogram and the phonocardiogram are very often corrupted by noisy sources. Usually, artificial intelligent algorithms analyze the signal regardless of its quality. On the other hand, physicians use a completely orthogonal strategy. They do not assess the entire recording, instead they search for a segment where the fundamental and abnormal waves are easily detected, and only then a prognostic is attempted. Inspired by this fact, a new algorithm that automatically selects an optimal segment for a post-processing stage, according to a criteria defined by the user is proposed. In the process, a Neural Network is used to compute the output state probability distribution for each sample. Using the aforementioned quantities, a graph is designed, whereas state transition constraints are physically imposed into the graph and a set of constraints are used to retrieve a subset of the recording that maximizes the likelihood function, proposed by the user. The developed framework is tested and validated in two applications. In both cases, the system performance is boosted significantly, e.g in heart sound segmentation, sensitivity increases 2.4% when compared to the standard approaches in the literature.
