A deep learning approach based on big data is proposed to locate broadband acoustic sources using a single hydrophone in ocean waveguides with uncertain bottom parameters. Several 50-layer residual neural networks, trained on a huge number of sound field replicas generated by an acoustic propagation model, are used to handle the bottom uncertainty in source localization. A two-step training strategy is presented to improve the training of the deep models. First, the range is discretized in a coarse (5 km) grid. Subsequently, the source range within the selected interval and source depth are discretized on a finer (0.1 km and 2 m) grid. The deep learning methods were demonstrated for simulated magnitude-only multi-frequency data in uncertain environments. Experimental data from the China Yellow Sea also validated the approach.

EEG source localization is an important technical issue in EEG analysis. Despite many numerical methods existed for EEG source localization, they all rely on strong priors and the deep sources are intractable. Here we propose a deep learning framework using spatial basis function decomposition for EEG source localization. This framework combines the edge sparsity prior and Gaussian source basis, called Edge Sparse Basis Network (ESBN). The performance of ESBN is validated by both synthetic data and real EEG data during motor tasks. The results suggest that the supervised ESBN outperforms the traditional numerical methods in synthetic data and the unsupervised fine-tuning provides more focal and accurate localizations in real data. Our proposed deep learning framework can be extended to account for other source priors, and the real-time property of ESBN can facilitate the applications of EEG in brain-computer interfaces and clinics.
In this paper, we propose an interpretable feature selection method based on principal component analysis (PCA) and principal component regression (PCR), which can extract important features for underwater source localization by only introducing the source location without other prior information. This feature selection method is combined with a two-step framework for underwater source localization based on the semi-supervised learning scheme. In the framework, the first step utilizes a convolutional autoencoder to extract the latent features from the whole available dataset. The second step performs source localization via an encoder multi-layer perceptron (MLP) trained on a limited labeled portion of the dataset. The proposed approach has been validated on the public dataset SwllEx-96 Event S5. The result shows the framework has appealing accuracy and robustness on the unseen data, especially when the number of data used to train gradually decreases. After feature selection, not only the training stage has a 95% acceleration but the performance of the framework becomes more robust on the depth and more accurate when the number of labeled data used to train is extremely limited.
We present a deep learning solution to the problem of localization of magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain signals. The proposed deep model architectures are tuned for single and multiple time point MEG data, and can estimate varying numbers of dipole sources. Results from simulated MEG data on the cortical surface of a real human subject demonstrated improvements against the popular RAP-MUSIC localization algorithm in specific scenarios with varying SNR levels, inter-source correlation values, and number of sources. Importantly, the deep learning models had robust performance to forward model errors and a significant reduction in computation time, to a fraction of 1 ms, paving the way to real-time MEG source localization.

High-accuracy absolute localization for a team of vehicles is essential when accomplishing various kinds of tasks. As a promising approach, collaborative localization fuses the individual motion measurements and the inter-vehicle measurements to collaboratively estimate the states. In this paper, we focus on the range-only collaborative localization, which specifies the inter-vehicle measurements as inter-vehicle ranging measurements. We first investigate the observability properties of the system and derive that to achieve bounded localization errors, two vehicles are required to remain static like external infrastructures. Under the guide of the observability analysis, we then propose our range-only collaborative localization system which categorize the ground vehicles into two static vehicles and dynamic vehicles. The vehicles are connected utilizing a UWB network that is capable of both producing inter-vehicle ranging measurements and communication. Simulation results validate the observability analysis and demonstrate that collaborative localization is capable of achieving higher accuracy when utilizing the inter-vehicle measurements. Extensive experimental results are performed for a team of 3 and 5 vehicles. The real-world results illustrate that our proposed system enables accurate and real-time estimation of all vehicles absolute poses.

It is commonly observed that acoustic echoes hurt performance of sound source localization (SSL) methods. We introduce the concept of microphone array augmentation with echoes (MIRAGE) and show how estimation of early-echo characteristics can in fact benefit SSL. We propose a learning-based scheme for echo estimation combined with a physics-based scheme for echo aggregation. In a simple scenario involving 2 microphones close to a reflective surface and one source, we show using simulated data that the proposed approach performs similarly to a correlation-based method in azimuth estimation while retrieving elevation as well from 2 microphones only, an impossible task in anechoic settings.
