Quantum Chesire Cat is a counterintuitive phenomenon that provides a new window into the nature of the quantum systems in relation to multiple degrees of freedom associated with a single physical entity. Under suitable pre and postselections, a photon (the cat) can be decoupled from its circular polarization (its grin). In this paper, we explore whether the grin without the cat can be teleported to a distant location. This will be a totally disembodied teleportation protocol. Based on the original Quantum Chesire Cat setup, we design a protocol where the circular polarization is successfully teleported between two spatially separated parties even when the photon is not physically present with them. The process raises questions in our understanding about properties of quantum system. In particular it shows that question like ``whose polarization is it can prove to be vacuous in such scenario.

Optical cat state plays an essential role in quantum computation and quantum metrology. Here, we experimentally quantify quantum coherence of an optical cat state by means of relative entropy and l_1 norm of coherence in Fock basis based on the prepared optical cat state at rubidium D1 line. By transmitting the optical cat state through a lossy channel, we also demonstrate the robustness of quantum coherence of optical cat state in the presence of loss, which is different from the decoherence properties of fidelity and Wigner function negativity of the optical cat state. Our results confirm that quantum coherence of optical cat states is robust against loss and pave the way for the application with optical cat states.

A kind of paradoxical effects has been demonstrated that the pigeonhole principle, i.e., if three pigeons are put in two pigeonholes then at least two pigeons must stay in the same hole, fails in certain quantum mechanical scenario. Here we shall show how to associate a proof of Kochen-Specker theorem with a quantum pigeonhole effect and vise versa, e.g., from state-independent proofs of Kochen-Specker theorem some kind of state-independent quantum pigeonhole effects can be demonstrated. In particular, a state-independent version of the quantum Cheshire cat, which can be rendered as a kind of quantum pigeonhole effect about the trouble of putting two pigeons in two or more pigeonholes, arises from Peres-Mermins magic square proof of contextuality.
Biased-noise qubits are a promising candidate for realizing hardware efficient fault-tolerant quantum computing. One promising biased-noise qubit is the Kerr cat qubit, which has recently been demonstrated experimentally. Despite various unique advantages of Kerr cat qubits, we explain how the noise bias of Kerr cat qubits is severely limited by heating-induced leakage in their current implementations. Then, we show that by adding frequency-selective single-photon loss to Kerr cat qubits we can counteract the leakage and thus recover much of their noise bias. We refer to such Kerr cat qubits combined with frequency-selective single-photon loss as colored Kerr cat qubits as they are protected by a colored dissipation. In particular, we show how a suitably engineered lossy environment can suppress the leakage and bit-flip errors of a Kerr cat qubit while not introducing any additional phase-flip errors. Since our scheme only requires single-photon loss, it can be readily implemented by using passive and linear elements. Moreover, our frequency-selectivity technique can be generally applied to energy-gap protected qubits whose computational basis states are given by near degenerate ground states of a Hamiltonian with a non-zero energy gap between the ground and excited state manifolds.
We present a comprehensive architectural analysis for a fault-tolerant quantum computer based on cat codes concatenated with outer quantum error-correcting codes. For the physical hardware, we propose a system of acoustic resonators coupled to superconducting circuits with a two-dimensional layout. Using estimated near-term physical parameters for electro-acoustic systems, we perform a detailed error analysis of measurements and gates, including CNOT and Toffoli gates. Having built a realistic noise model, we numerically simulate quantum error correction when the outer code is either a repetition code or a thin rectangular surface code. Our next step toward universal fault-tolerant quantum computation is a protocol for fault-tolerant Toffoli magic state preparation that significantly improves upon the fidelity of physical Toffoli gates at very low qubit cost. To achieve even lower overheads, we devise a new magic-state distillation protocol for Toffoli states. Combining these results together, we obtain realistic full-resource estimates of the physical error rates and overheads needed to run useful fault-tolerant quantum algorithms. We find that with around 1,000 superconducting circuit components, one could construct a fault-tolerant quantum computer that can run circuits which are intractable for classical supercomputers. Hardware with 32,000 superconducting circuit components, in turn, could simulate the Hubbard model in a regime beyond the reach of classical computing.
It is shown that discrete-event simulation accurately reproduces the experimental data of a single-neutron interferometry experiment [T. Denkmayr {sl et al.}, Nat. Commun. 5, 4492 (2014)] and provides a logically consistent, paradox-free, cause-and-effect explanation of the quantum Cheshire cat effect without invoking the notion that the neutron and its magnetic moment separate. Describing the experimental neutron data using weak-measurement theory is shown to be useless for unravelling the quantum Cheshire cat effect.
