We investigate sputtering of a Ti3SiC2 compound target at temperatures ranging from RT (no applied external heating) to 970 oC as well as the influence of the sputtering power at 850 oC for the deposition of Ti3SiC2 films on Al2O3(0001) substrates. Elemental composition obtained from time-of-flight energy elastic recoil detection analysis shows an excess of carbon in all films, which is explained by differences in angular distribution between C, Si and Ti, where C scatters the least during sputtering. The oxygen content is 2.6 at.% in the film deposited at RT and decreases with increasing deposition temperature, showing that higher temperatures favor high purity films. Chemical bonding analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows C-Ti and Si-C bonding in the Ti3SiC2 films and Si-Si bonding in the Ti3SiC2 compound target. X-ray diffraction reveals that the phases Ti3SiC2, Ti4SiC3, and Ti7Si2C5 can be deposited from a Ti3SiC2 compound target at substrate temperatures above 850 oC and with growth of TiC and the Nowotny phase Ti5Si3Cx at lower temperatures. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy shows epitaxial growth of Ti3SiC2, Ti4SiC3, and Ti7Si2C5 on TiC at 970 oC. Four-point probe resistivity measurements give values in the range 120 to 450 micro-Ohm-cm and with the lowest values obtained for films containing Ti3SiC2, Ti4SiC3, and Ti7Si2C5.

High quality ZnO thin films were gown using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001) Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates in an oxidizing atmosphere, using a Zn metallic target. We varied the growth conditions such as the deposition temperature and the oxygen pressure. First, using a battery of techniques such as x-rays diffraction, Rutherford Backscattering spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, we evaluated the structural quality, the stress and the degree of epitaxy of the films. Second, the relations between the deposition conditions and the structural properties, that are directly related to the nature of the thin films, are discussed qualitatively. Finally, a number of issues on how to get good-quality ZnO films are addressed.
Chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as a new class of electronic materials, but fundamental properties and applications of chalcogenide perovskites remain limited by the lack of high quality epitaxial thin films. We report epitaxial thin film growth of BaZrS3, a prototypical chalcogenide, by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction studies show that the films are strongly textured out of plane and have a clear in-plane epitaxial relationship with the substrate. Electron microscopy studies confirm the presence of epitaxy for the first few layers of the film at the interface, even though away from the interface the films are polycrystalline with a large number of extended defects suggesting the potential for further improvement in growth. X-Ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy show smooth film surfaces and interfaces between the substrate and the film. The films show strong light absorption near the band edge and photoluminescence in the visible region. The photodetector devices show fast and efficient photo response with the highest ON/OFF ratio reported for BaZrS3 films thus far. Our study opens up opportunities to realize epitaxial thin films, heterostructures, and superlattices of chalcogenide perovskites to probe fundamental physical phenomena and the resultant electronic and photonic device technologies.
We develop a phenomenological thermodynamic theory of ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BT) thin films epitaxially grown on cubic substrates using the Landau-Devonshire eight-order potential. The constructed misfit-temperature phase diagram is asymmetrical. We found that, overall view of the phase diagram depends on the values of compliances used in calculations and provide two qualitatively different diagrams. A thermodynamic path for BT film grown onto particular substrate can be found using a plot of the room-temperature tetragonal distortion (c-a)/a as a function of misfit strain.
Whether {alpha}double prime-Fe16N2 possesses a giant saturation magnetization (Ms) has been a daunting problem among magnetic researchers for almost 40 years, mainly due to the unshakable faith of famous Slater-Pauling (SP) curve and poor consistency on evaluating its Ms. Here we demonstrate that, using epitaxy and mis-fit strain imposed by an underlying substrate, the in-plane lattice constant of Fe16N2 thin films can be fine tuned to create favorable conditions for exceptionally large saturation magnetization. Combined study using polarized neutron reflectometry and X-ray diffraction shows that with increasing strain at the interface the Ms of these film can be changed over a broad range, from ~2.1T (non-high Ms) up to ~3.1T (high Ms). We suggest that the equilibrium in-plane lattice constant of Fe16N2 sits in the vicinity of the spin crossover point, in which a transition between low spin to high spin configuration of Fe sites can be realized with sensitive adjustment of crystal structure.

Pulsed-laser deposition has been used to grow epitaxial thin films of the giant-dielectric-constant material CaCu_3Ti_4O_{12} on LaAlO_3 and SrTiO_3 substrates with or without various conducting buffer layers. The latter include YBa_2Cu_3O_7, La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_{4+delta} and LaNiO_3. Above 100K - 150K the thin films have a temperature independent dielectric constant as do single crystals. The value of the dielectric constant is of the order of 1500 over a wide temperature region, potentially making it a good candidate for many applications. The frequency dependence of its dielectric properties below 100K - 150K indicates an activated relaxation process.
