Constraints set on key parameters of the nuclear matter equation of state (EoS) by the values of the tidal deformability, inferred from GW170817, are examined by using a diverse set of relativistic and non-relativistic mean field models. These models are consistent with bulk properties of finite nuclei as well as with the observed lower bound on the maximum mass of neutron star $sim 2 ~ {rm M}_odot$. The tidal deformability shows a strong correlation with specific linear combinations of the isoscalar and isovector nuclear matter parameters associated with the EoS. Such correlations suggest that a precise value of the tidal deformability can put tight bounds on several EoS parameters, in particular, on the slope of the incompressibility and the curvature of the symmetry energy. The tidal deformability obtained from the GW170817 and its UV/optical/infrared counterpart sets the radius of a canonical $1.4~ {rm M}_{odot}$ neutron star to be $11.82leqslant R_{1.4}leqslant13.72$ km.

Neutron star (NS) is a unique astronomical compact object where the four fundamental interactions have been revealed from the observation and studied in different ways. While the macroscopic properties of NS like mass and radius can be determined within the General Relativity using a realistic equation of state (EOS) of NS matter, such an EOS is usually generated by a nuclear structure model like, e.g., the nuclear mean-field approach to asymmetric nuclear matter. Given the radius of NS extended to above 10 km and its mass up to twice the solar mass, NS is expected to be tidally deformed when it is embedded in a strong tidal field. Such a tidal effect was confirmed unambiguously in the gravitation wave signals detected recently by the LIGO and Virgo laser interferometers from GW170817, the first ever direct observation of a binary NS merger. A nonrelativistic mean-field study is carried out in the present work within the Hartree-Fock formalism to construct the EOS of NS matter, which is then used to determine the tidal deformability, gravitational mass, and radius of NS. The mean-field results are compared with the constraints imposed for these quantities by the global analysis of the observed GW170817 data, and a strong impact by the incompressibility of nuclear matter on the hydrostatic configuration of NS is shown.

We present predictions for neutron star tidal deformabilities obtained from a Bayesian analysis of the nuclear equation of state, assuming a minimal model at high-density that neglects the possibility of phase transitions. The Bayesian posterior probability distribution is constructed from priors obtained from microscopic many-body theory based on realistic two- and three-body nuclear forces, while the likelihood functions incorporate empirical information about the equation of state from nuclear experiments. The neutron star crust equation of state is constructed from the liquid drop model, and the core-crust transition density is found by comparing the energy per baryon in inhomogeneous matter and uniform nuclear matter. From the cold $beta$-equilibrated neutron star equation of state, we then compute neutron star tidal deformabilities as well as the mass-radius relationship. Finally, we investigate correlations between the neutron star tidal deformability and properties of finite nuclei.
The detection of the GW170817 neutron star merger event has incited an intense research activity towards the understanding of the nuclear matter equation of state. In this paper we compare in particular the pressure-density relation obtained from heavy-ion collisions with the analysis of the NS merger event. Moreover, we present recent calculations of neutron stars moment of inertia and tidal deformability using various microscopic equations of state for nuclear and hybrid star configurations, and confirm several universal relations. We also discuss the recent constraints for the NS radii determined by GW170817, and find compatible radii between 12 and 13 kilometers, thus identifying the suitable equations of state.

{it Background.} We investigate possible correlations between neutron star observables and properties of atomic nuclei. Particularly, we explore how the tidal deformability of a 1.4 solar mass neutron star, $M_{1.4}$, and the neutron skin thickness of ${^{48}}$Ca and ${^{208}}$Pb are related to the stellar radius and the stiffness of the symmetry energy. {it Methods.} We examine a large set of nuclear equations of state based on phenomenological models (Skyrme, NLWM, DDM) and {it ab-initio} theoretical methods (BBG, Dirac-Brueckner, Variational, Quantum Monte Carlo). {it Results.} We find strong correlations between tidal deformability and NS radius, whereas a weaker correlation does exist with the stiffness of the symmetry energy. Regarding the neutron skin thickness, weak correlations appear both with the stiffness of the symmetry energy, and the radius of a $M_{1.4}$. {it Conclusion.} The tidal deformability of a $M_{1.4}$ and the neutron-skin thickness of atomic nuclei show some degree of correlation with nuclear and astrophysical observables, which however depends on the ensemble of adopted EoS.
New observational data of neutron stars since GW170817 have helped improve our knowledge about nuclear symmetry energy especially at high densities. We have learned particularly: (1) The slope parameter $L$ of nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density $rho_0$ of nuclear matter from 24 new analyses is about $Lapprox 57.7pm 19$ MeV at 68% confidence level consistent with its fiducial value, (2) The curvature $K_{rm{sym}}$ from 16 new analyses is about $K_{rm{sym}}approx -107pm 88$ MeV, (3) The magnitude of nuclear symmetry energy at $2rho_0$, i.e. $E_{rm{sym}}(2rho_0)approx 51pm 13$ MeV at 68% confidence level, has been extracted from 9 new analyses of neutron star observables consistent with results from earlier analyses of heavy-ion reactions and the latest predictions of the state-of-the-art nuclear many-body theories, (4) while the available data from canonical neutron stars do not provide tight constraints on nuclear symmetry energy at densities above about $2rho_0$, the lower radius boundary $R_{2.01}=12.2$ km from NICERs very recent observation of PSR J0740+6620 of mass $2.08pm 0.07$ $M_{odot}$ and radius $R=12.2-16.3$ km at 68% confidence level sets a tight lower limit for nuclear symmetry energy at densities above $2rho_0$, (5) Bayesian inferences of nuclear symmetry energy using models encapsulating a first-order hadron-quark phase transition from observables of canonical neutron stars indicate that the phase transition shift appreciably both the $L$ and $K_{rm{sym}}$ to higher values but with larger uncertaintie , (6) The high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy affects significantly the minimum frequency necessary to rotationally support GW190814s secondary component of mass (2.50-2.67) $M_{odot}$ as the fastest and most massive pulsar discovered so far.
