To model momentum exchange in nonlinear wave-particle interaction, as in amplification devices like traveling-wave tubes, we use an $N$-body self-consistent hamiltonian description based on Kuznetsovs discrete model, and we provide new formulations for the electromagnetic power and the conserved momentum. This approach leads to fast and accurate numerical simulations in time domain and in one dimensional space.

Conservation of energy and momentum in the classical theory of radiating electrons has been a challenging problem since its inception. We propose a formulation of classical electrodynamics in Hamiltonian form that satisfies the Maxwell equations and the Lorentz force. The radiated field is represented with eigenfunctions using the Gelfand $beta$-transform. The electron Hamiltonian is the standard one coupling the particles with the propagating fields. The dynamics conserves energy and excludes self-acceleration. A complete Hamiltonian formulation results from adding electrostatic action-at-a-distance coupling between electrons.

Difficulties in founding microscopically the Vlasov equation for Coulomb-interacting particles are recalled for both the statistical approach (BBGKY hierarchy and Liouville equation on phase space) and the dynamical approach (single empirical measure on one-particle $(mathbf{r},mathbf{v})$-space). The role of particle trajectories (characteristics) in the analysis of the partial differential Vlasov--Poisson system is stressed. Starting from many-body dynamics, a direct derivation of both Debye shielding and collective behaviour is sketched.

This paper brings further insight into the recently published N-body description of Debye shielding and Landau damping [Escande D F, Elskens Y and Doveil F 2014 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 57 025017]. Its fundamental equation for the electrostatic potential is derived in a simpler and more rigorous way. Various physical consequences of the new approach are discussed, and this approach is compared with the seminal one by Pines and Bohm [Pines D and Bohm D 1952 Phys. Rev. 85 338--353].
The radiation reaction radically influences the electron motion in an electromagnetic standing wave formed by two super-intense counter-propagating laser pulses. Depending on the laser intensity and wavelength, either classical or quantum mode of radiation reaction prevail, or both are strong. When radiation reaction dominates, electron motion evolves to limit cycles and strange attractors. This creates a new framework for high energy physics experiments on an interaction of energetic charged particle beams and colliding super-intense laser pulses.
We briefly report on a recent proposal (Fiore in J Phys A Math Theor 51:085203, 2018) for simplifying the equations of motion of charged particles in an electromagnetic (EM) field $F^{mu u}$ that is the sum of a plane travelling wave $F_t^{mu u}(ct!-!z)$ and a static part $F_s^{mu u}(x,y,z)$; it adopts the light-like coordinate $xi=ct!-!z$ instead of time $t$ as an independent variable. We illustrate it in a few cases of extreme acceleration, first of an isolated particle, then of electrons in a plasma in plane hydrodynamic conditions: the Lorentz-Maxwell & continuity PDEs can be simplified or sometimes even completely reduced to a family of decoupled systems of ordinary ones; this occurs e.g. with the impact of the travelling wave on a vacuum-plasma interface (what may produce plasma waves or the slingshot effect).
