In this paper, we address the symbol level precoding (SLP) design problem under max-min SINR criterion in the downlink of multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) channels. First, we show that the distance preserving constructive interference regions (DPCIR) are always polyhedral angles (shifted pointed cones) for any given constellation point with unbounded decision region. Then we prove that any signal in a given unbounded DPCIR has a norm larger than the norm of the corresponding vertex if and only if the convex hull of the constellation contains the origin. Using these properties, we show that the power of the noiseless received signal lying on an unbounded DPCIR is an strictly increasing function of two parameters. This allows us to reformulate the originally non-convex SLP max-min SINR as a convex optimization problem. We discuss the loss due to our proposed convex reformulation and provide some simulation results.

The recently emerged symbol-level precoding (SLP) technique has been regarded as a promising solution in multi-user wireless communication systems, since it can convert harmful multi-user interference (MUI) into beneficial signals for enhancing system performance. However, the tremendous computational complexity of conventional symbol-level precoding designs severely hinders the practical implementations. In order to tackle this difficulty, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) based approach to efficiently design the symbol-level precoders. Particularly, in this correspondence, we consider a multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink system. An efficient precoding neural network (EPNN) is introduced to optimize the symbol-level precoders for maximizing the minimum quality-of-service (QoS) of all users under the power constraint. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EPNN based SLP design can dramatically reduce the computing time at the price of slight performance loss compared with the conventional convex optimization based SLP design.
In this paper, we address robust design of symbol-level precoding for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output wireless channels, in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. In particular, we consider two common uncertainty models for the CSI imperfection, namely, spherical (bounded) and stochastic (Gaussian). Our design objective is to minimize the total (per-symbol) transmission power subject to constructive interference (CI) constraints as well as users quality-of-service requirements in terms of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Assuming bounded channel uncertainties, we obtain a convex CI constraint based on the worst-case robust analysis, whereas in the case of Gaussian uncertainties, we define probabilistic CI constraints in order to achieve robustness to statistically-known CSI errors. Since the probabilistic constraints of actual interest are difficult to handle, we resort to their convex approximations, yielding tractable (deterministic) robust constraints. Three convex approximations are developed based on different robust conservatism approaches, among which one is introduced as a benchmark for comparison. We show that each of our proposed approximations is tighter than the other under specific robustness conditions, while both always outperform the benchmark. Using the developed CI constraints, we formulate the robust precoding optimization as a convex conic quadratic program. Extensive simulation results are provided to validate our analytic discussions and to make comparisons with existing robust precoding schemes. We also show that the robust design increases the computational complexity by an order of the number of users in the large system limit, compared to its non-robust counterpart.
This paper investigates a joint beamforming design in a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication network aided with an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) panel. The symbol-level precoding (SLP) is adopted to enhance the system performance by exploiting the multiuser interference (MUI) with consideration of bounded channel uncertainty. The joint beamforming design is formulated into a nonconvex worst-case robust programming to minimize the transmit power subject to single-to-noise ratio (SNR) requirements. To address the challenges due to the constant modulus and the coupling of the beamformers, we first study the single-user case. Specifically, we propose and compare two algorithms based on the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and alternating optimization (AO) methods, respectively. It turns out that the AO-based algorithm has much lower computational complexity but with almost the same power to the SDR-based algorithm. Then, we apply the AO technique to the multiuser case and thereby develop an algorithm based on the proximal gradient descent (PGD) method. The algorithm can be generalized to the case of finite-resolution IRS and the scenario with direct links from the transmitter to the users. Numerical results show that the SLP can significantly improve the system performance. Meanwhile, 3-bit phase shifters can achieve near-optimal power performance.
We focus on the realistic maximization of the uplink minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of a general multiple-input single-output (MISO) system assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in the large system limit accounting for HIs. In particular, we introduce the HIs at both the IRS (IRS-HIs) and the transceiver HIs (AT-HIs), usually neglected despite their inevitable impact. Specifically, the deterministic equivalent analysis enables the derivation of the asymptotic weighted maximum-minimum SINR with HIs by jointly optimizing the HIs-aware receiver, the transmit power, and the reflect beamforming matrix (RBM). Notably, we obtain the optimal power allocation and reflect beamforming matrix with low overhead instead of their frequent necessary computation in conventional MIMO systems based on the instantaneous channel information. Monte Carlo simulations verify the analytical results which show the insightful interplay among the key parameters and the degradation of the performance due to HIs.
Hybrid analog-digital (A/D) transceivers designed for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have received substantial research attention, as a benefit of their lower cost and modest energy consumption compared to their fully-digital counterparts. We further improve their performance by conceiving a Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) based nonlinear joint design for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave systems. Our optimization criterion is that of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the system under channel uncertainties subject both to realistic transmit power constraint and to the unit modulus constraint imposed on the elements of the analog beamforming (BF) matrices governing the BF operation in the radio frequency domain. We transform this optimization problem into a more tractable form and develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm for solving it. Then, a novel two-timescale nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithm is developed, which can be viewed as an extension of the BCD-based joint design algorithm for reducing both the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead and the effects of outdated CSI. Moreover, we determine the near-optimal cancellation order for the THP structure based on the lower bound of the MSE. The proposed algorithms can be guaranteed to converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the original problem. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithms significantly outperform the existing linear hybrid transceiver algorithms and approach the performance of the fully-digital transceiver, despite its lower cost and power dissipation.
