Hybrid analog-digital (A/D) transceivers designed for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have received substantial research attention, as a benefit of their lower cost and modest energy consumption compared to their fully-digital counterparts. We further improve their performance by conceiving a Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) based nonlinear joint design for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave systems. Our optimization criterion is that of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the system under channel uncertainties subject both to realistic transmit power constraint and to the unit modulus constraint imposed on the elements of the analog beamforming (BF) matrices governing the BF operation in the radio frequency domain. We transform this optimization problem into a more tractable form and develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm for solving it. Then, a novel two-timescale nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithm is developed, which can be viewed as an extension of the BCD-based joint design algorithm for reducing both the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead and the effects of outdated CSI. Moreover, we determine the near-optimal cancellation order for the THP structure based on the lower bound of the MSE. The proposed algorithms can be guaranteed to converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the original problem. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithms significantly outperform the existing linear hybrid transceiver algorithms and approach the performance of the fully-digital transceiver, despite its lower cost and power dissipation.
Large intelligent surface (LIS) has recently emerged as a potential low-cost solution to reshape the wireless propagation environment for improving the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we consider a downlink millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, where an LIS is deployed to assist the downlink data transmission from a base station (BS) to a user equipment (UE). Both the BS and the UE are equipped with a large number of antennas, and a hybrid analog/digital precoding/combining structure is used to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption. We aim to maximize the spectral efficiency by jointly optimizing the LISs reflection coefficients and the hybrid precoder (combiner) at the BS (UE). To tackle this non-convex problem, we reformulate the complex optimization problem into a much more friendly optimization problem by exploiting the inherent structure of the effective (cascade) mmWave channel. A manifold optimization (MO)-based algorithm is then developed. Simulation results show that by carefully devising LISs reflection coefficients, our proposed method can help realize a favorable propagation environment with a small channel matrix condition number. Besides, it can achieve a performance comparable to those of state-of-the-art algorithms, while at a much lower computational complexity.
We propose four hybrid combiner/precoder for downlink mmWave massive MU-MIMO systems. The design of a hybrid combiner/precoder is divided in two parts, analog and digital. The system baseband model shows that the signal processed by the mobile station can be interpreted as a received signal in the presence of colored Gaussian noise, therefore, since the digital part of the combiner and precoder do not have constraints for their generation, their designs can be based on any traditional signal processing that takes into account this kind of noise. To the best of our knowledge, this was not considered by previous works. A more realistic and appropriate design is described in this paper. Also, the approaches adopted in the literature for the designing of the combiner/precoder analog parts do not try to avoid or even reduce the inter user/symbol interference, they concentrate on increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We propose a simple solution that decreases the interference while maintaining large SNR. In addition, one of the proposed hybrid combiners reaches the maximum value of our objective function according with the Hadamards inequality. Numerical results illustrate the BER performance improvements resulting from our proposals. In addition, a simple detection approach can be used for data estimation without significant performance loss.
Hybrid analog/digital precoding in millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-ouput (MIMO) systems is capable of achieving the near-optimal full-digital performance at reduced hardware cost and power consumption compared to its full-RF digital counterpart. However, having numerous phase shifters is still costly, especially when the phase shifters are of high resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel twin-resolution phase-shifter network for mmWave MIMO systems, which reduces the power consumption of an entirely high-resolution network, whilst mitigating the severe array gain reduction of an entirely low-resolution network. The connections between the twin phase shifters having different resolutions and the antennas are either fixed or dynamically configured. In the latter, we jointly design the phase-shifter network and the hybrid precoding matrix, where the phase of each entry in the analog precoding matrix can be dynamically designed according to the required resolution. This method is slightly modified for the fixed networks hybrid precoding matrix. Furthermore, we extend the proposed method to multi-user MIMO systems and provide its performance analysis. Our simulation results show that the proposed dynamic hybrid precoding method strikes an attractive performance vs. power consumption trade-off.
User electromagnetic (EM) exposure is continuously being exacerbated by the evolution of multi-antenna portable devices. To mitigate the effects of EM radiation, portable devices must satisfy tight regulations on user exposure level, generally measured by specific absorption rate (SAR). To this end, we investigate the SAR-aware uplink precoder design for the energy efficiency (EE) maximization in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output transmission exploiting statistical channel state information (CSI). As the objective function of the design problem is computationally demanding in the absence of closed form, we present an asymptotic approximation of the objective to facilitate the precoder design. An iterative algorithm based on Dinkelbachs method and sequential optimization is proposed to obtain an optimal solution of the asymptotic EE optimization problem. Based on the transformed problem, an iterative SAR-aware water-filing scheme is further conceived for the EE optimization precoding design with statistical CSI. Numerical results illustrate substantial performance improvements provided by our proposed SAR-aware energy-efficient transmission scheme over the traditional baseline schemes.
We introduce a framework for linear precoder design over a massive multiple-input multiple-output downlink system and in presence of nonlinear power amplifiers (PAs). By studying the spatial characteristics of the distortion, we demonstrate that conventional linear precoding techniques steer nonlinear distortions in the direction of the users. We show that, by taking into account PA nonlinearity characteristics, one can design linear precoders that reduce, and in single-user scenarios, even remove completely the distortion transmitted in the direction of the users. This, however, is achieved at the price of a considerably reduced array gain. To address this issue, we present precoder optimization algorithms which simultaneously take into account the effects of array gain, distortion, multiuser interference, and receiver noise. Specifically, we derive an expression for the achievable sum rate and propose an iterative algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix maximizing this expression. Moreover, using a model for PA power consumption, we propose an algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix minimizing the consumed power for a given minimum achievable sum rate. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed distortion-aware precoding techniques yield considerable improvements in terms of spectral and energy efficiency compared to conventional linear precoding techniques.
