Low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are considered to reduce cost and power consumption in multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). Using the Bussgang theorem, we derive the asymptotic downlink achievable rate w.r.t the resolutions of both DACs and ADCs, i.e., $b_{DA}$ and $b_{AD}$, under the assumption of large antenna number, $N$, and fixed user load ratio, $beta$. We characterize the rate loss caused by finite-bit-resolution converters and reveal that the quantization distortion is ignorable at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) even with low-resolution converters at both sides. While for maintaining the same rate loss at high SNR, it is discovered that one-more-bit DAC resolution is needed when more users are scheduled with $beta$ increased by four times. More specifically for one-bit rate loss requirement, $b_{DA}$ can be set by $leftlceil b_{AD}+frac{1}{2}logbeta rightrceil$ given $b_{AD}$. Similar observations on ADCs are also obtained with numerical verifications.

Low-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has shown great potential in facilitating cost- and power-efficient implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We investigate the performance of a massive MIMO downlink network with low-resolution DACs using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. It serves multiple receivers equipped with finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By taking the quantization errors at both the transmitter and receivers into account under spatially correlated channels, the regularization parameter for RZF is optimized with a closed-form solution by applying the asymptotic random matrix theory. The optimal regularization parameter increases linearly with respect to the user loading ratio while independent of the ADC quantization resolution and the channel correlation. Furthermore, asymptotic sum rate performance is characterized and a closed-form expression for the optimal user loading ratio is obtained at low signal-to-noise ratio. The optimal ratio increases with the DAC resolution while it decreases with the ADC resolution. Numerical simulations verify our observations.
In this paper, we investigate the performance of cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. With the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) algorithm, we obtain the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) estimate of the effective channel coefficients from all users to all access points (APs) in order to perform joint user activity detection and channel estimation. Subsequently, using the decoupling properties of MMSE estimation for large linear systems and state evolution equations of the GAMP algorithm, we obtain the variances of both the estimated channel coefficients and the corresponding channel estimation error. Finally, we study the achievable uplink rates with zero-forcing (ZF) detector at the central processing unit (CPU) of the cell-free massive MIMO system. With numerical results, we analyze the impact of the number of pilots used for joint activity detection and channel estimation, the number of APs, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on the achievable rates.
The robustness of system throughput with scheduling is a critical issue. In this paper, we analyze the sensitivity of multi-user scheduling performance to channel misreporting in systems with massive antennas. The main result is that for the round-robin scheduler combined with max-min power control, the channel magnitude misreporting is harmful to the scheduling performance and has a different impact from the purely physical layer analysis. Specifically, for the homogeneous users that have equal average signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), underreporting is harmful, while overreporting is beneficial to others. In underreporting, the asymptotic rate loss on others is derived, which is tight when the number of antennas is huge. One interesting observation in our research is that the rate loss periodically increases and decreases as the number of misreporters grows. For the heterogeneous users that have various SNRs, both underreporting and overreporting can degrade the scheduler performance. We observe that strong misreporting changes the user grouping decision and hence greatly decreases some users rates regardless of others gaining rate improvements, while with carefully designed weak misreporting, the scheduling decision keeps fixed and the rate loss on others is shown to grow nearly linearly with the number of misreporters.
Hybrid analog-digital (A/D) transceivers designed for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have received substantial research attention, as a benefit of their lower cost and modest energy consumption compared to their fully-digital counterparts. We further improve their performance by conceiving a Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) based nonlinear joint design for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave systems. Our optimization criterion is that of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the system under channel uncertainties subject both to realistic transmit power constraint and to the unit modulus constraint imposed on the elements of the analog beamforming (BF) matrices governing the BF operation in the radio frequency domain. We transform this optimization problem into a more tractable form and develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm for solving it. Then, a novel two-timescale nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithm is developed, which can be viewed as an extension of the BCD-based joint design algorithm for reducing both the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead and the effects of outdated CSI. Moreover, we determine the near-optimal cancellation order for the THP structure based on the lower bound of the MSE. The proposed algorithms can be guaranteed to converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the original problem. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithms significantly outperform the existing linear hybrid transceiver algorithms and approach the performance of the fully-digital transceiver, despite its lower cost and power dissipation.
In this paper, we investigate a multiuser relay system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. Assuming that both base station (BS) and relay station (RS) are equipped with multiple antennas, this work studies the joint transceiver design problem for the BS beamforming vectors, the RS amplify-and-forward transformation matrix and the power splitting (PS) ratios at the single-antenna receivers. Firstly, an iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization (AO) and with guaranteed convergence is proposed to successively optimize the transceiver coefficients. Secondly, a novel design scheme based on switched relaying (SR) is proposed that can significantly reduce the computational complexity and overhead of the AO based designs while maintaining a similar performance. In the proposed SR scheme, the RS is equipped with a codebook of permutation matrices. For each permutation matrix, a latent transceiver is designed which consists of BS beamforming vectors, optimally scaled RS permutation matrix and receiver PS ratios. For the given CSI, the optimal transceiver with the lowest total power consumption is selected for transmission. We propose a concave-convex procedure based and subgradient-type iterative algorithms for the non-robust and robust latent transceiver designs. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of all the proposed algorithms.
