A crucial result in quantum chaos, which has been established for a long time, is that the spectral properties of classically integrable systems generically are described by Poisson statistics whereas those of time-reversal symmetric, classically chaotic systems coincide with those of random matrices from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE). Does this result hold for two-dimensional Dirac material systems? To address this fundamen- tal question, we investigate the spectral properties in a representative class of graphene billiards with shapes of classically integrable circular-sector billiards. Naively one may expect to observe Poisson statistics, which is indeed true for energies close to the band edges where the quasiparticle obeys the Schrodinger equation. However, for energies near the Dirac point, where the quasiparticles behave like massless Dirac fermions, Pois- son statistics is extremely rare in the sense that it emerges only under quite strict symmetry constraints on the straight boundary parts of the sector. An arbitrarily small amount of imperfection of the boundary results in GOE statistics. This implies that, for circular sector confinements with arbitrary angle, the spectral properties will generically be GOE. These results are corroborated by extensive numerical computation. Furthermore, we provide a physical understanding for our results.

We report on the experimental investigation of the properties of the eigenvalues and wavefunctions and the fluctuation properties of the scattering matrix of closed and open billiards, respectively, of which the classical dynamics undergoes a transition from integrable via almost integrable to fully chaotic. To realize such a system we chose a billiard with a 60 degree sector shape of which the classical dynamics is integrable, and introduced circular scatterers of varying number, size and position. The spectral properties of generic quantum systems of which the classical counterpart is either integrable or chaotic are universal and well understood. If, however, the classical dynamics is pseudo-integrable or almost-integrable, they exhibit a non-universal intermediate statistics, for which analytical results are known only in a few cases, like, e.g., if it corresponds to semi-Poisson statistics. Since the latter is, above all, clearly distinguishable from those of integrable and chaotic systems our aim was to design a billiard with these features which indeed is achievable by adding just one scatterer of appropriate size and position to the sector billiard. We demonstrate that, while the spectral properties of almost-integrable billiards are sensitive to the classical dynamics, this is not the case for the distribution of the wavefunction components, which was analysed in terms of the strength distribution, and the fluctuation properties of the scattering matrix which coincide with those of typical, fully chaotic systems.

The structure of the semiclassical trace formula can be used to construct a quasi-classical evolution operator whose spectrum has a one-to-one correspondence with the semiclassical quantum spectrum. We illustrate this for marginally unstable integrable and non-integrable billiards and demonstrate its utility by quantizing them using arbitrary non-periodic trajectories.
We studied the energy levels of graphene based Andreev billiards consisting of a superconductor region on top of a monolayer graphene sheet. For the case of Andreev retro-reflection we show that the graphene based Andreev billiard can be mapped to the normal metal-superconducting billiards with the same geometry. We also derived a semiclassical quantization rule in graphene based Andreev billiards. The exact and the semiclassically obtained spectrum agree very well both for the case of Andreev retro-reflection and specular Andreev reflection.
We present a comprehensive review of the nodal domains and lines of quantum billiards, emphasizing a quantitative comparison of theoretical findings to experiments. The nodal statistics are shown to distinguish not only between regular and chaotic classical dynamics but also between different geometric shapes of the billiard system itself. We discuss, in particular, how a random superposition of plane waves can model chaotic eigenfunctions and highlight the connections of the complex morphology of the nodal lines thereof to percolation theory and Schramm-Loewner evolution. Various approaches to counting the nodal domains---using trace formulae, graph theory, and difference equations---are also illustrated with examples. The nodal patterns addressed pertain to waves on vibrating plates and membranes, acoustic and electromagnetic modes, wavefunctions of a particle in a box as well as to percolating clusters, and domains in ferromagnets, thus underlining the diversity---and far-reaching implications---of the problem.
The relation between the Shannon entropy and avoided crossings is investigated in dielectric microcavities. The Shannon entropy of probability density for eigenfunctions in an open elliptic billiard as well as a closed quadrupole billiard increases as the center of avoided crossing is approached. These results are opposite to those of atomic physics for electrons. It is found that the collective Lamb shift of the open quantum system and the symmetry breaking in the closed chaotic quantum system give equivalent effects to the Shannon entropy.
