We firstly demonstrate physically-prepared compliant PVA hydrogel electrodes as a promising supplement in dielectric elastomer actuators. They are capable of conducting high voltages over 5 kV without electrolysis by an electrical double layer effect. The hydrogel electrodes adhere tightly to the dielectric layer, which ensures its structural stability during actuation. All-polymeric actuators fabricated by these electrodes exhibited excellent consecutive working performance over 2960 cycles. The actuation was influenced by applied voltage, ramp rate, electrode elastic modulus and moisture content. A maximum areal strain over 78% was achieved. Tunable transparency, good biocompatibility, long lifetime, low cost and facile fabrication make PVA hydrogel electrode another promising candidate in the fields of sensors, artificial muscles and optical applications.

This paper presents modeling of a compliant 2D manipulator, a so called soft hydraulic/fluidic elastomer actuator. Our focus is on fiber-Reinforced Fluidic Elastomer Actuators (RFEA) driven by a constant pressure hydraulic supply and modulated on/off valves. We present a model that not only provides the dynamics behavior of the system but also the kinematics of the actuator. In addition to that, the relation between the applied hydraulic pressure and the bending angle of the soft actuator and thus, its tip position is formulated in a systematic way. We also present a steady state model that calculates the bending angle given the fluid pressure which can be beneficial to find out the initial values of the parameters during the system identification process. Our experimental results verify and validate the performance of the proposed modeling approach both in transition and steady states. Due to its inherent simplicity, this model shall also be used in real-time control of the soft actuators.

A novel nanomaterial which consists of graphene sheets decorated with silsesquioxane molecoles has been developed. Indeed, aminopropyl-silsesquioxane (POSS-NH2) has been employed to functionalize graphene oxide sheets (GOs). The surface grafting of GOs with POSS-NH2 has been established by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while the morphology has been investigated by field emission electron microscopy as well as by atomic force microscopy. The combination of the amino functionalized POSS molecules with GO sheets produces a hybrid silicon/graphite-based nanomaterial, named GRAPOSS, for which the electrical conductivity of reduced GO was restored, thus allowing promising exploitations in several fields such as polymer nanocomposites.
Macroscale robotic systems have demonstrated great capabilities of high speed, precise, and agile functions. However, the ability of soft robots to perform complex tasks, especially in centimeter and millimeter scale, remains limited due to the unavailability of fast, energy-efficient soft actuators that can programmably change shape. Here, we combine desirable characteristics from two distinct active materials: fast and efficient actuation from dielectric elastomers and facile shape programmability from liquid crystal elastomers into a single shape changing electrical actuator. Uniaxially aligned monoliths achieve strain rates over 120%/s with energy conversion efficiency of 20% while moving loads over 700 times the actuator weight. The combined actuator technology offers unprecedented opportunities towards miniaturization with precision, efficiency, and more degrees of freedom for applications in soft robotics and beyond.
Novel robotic grippers have captured increasing interests recently because of their abilities to adapt to varieties of circumstances and their powerful functionalities. Differing from traditional gripper with mechanical components-made fingers, novel robotic grippers are typically made of novel structures and materials, using a novel manufacturing process. In this paper, a novel robotic gripper with external frame and internal thermoplastic elastomer belt-made net is proposed. The gripper grasps objects using the friction between the net and objects. It has the ability of adaptive gripping through flexible contact surface. Stress simulation has been used to explore the regularity between the normal stress on the net and the deformation of the net. Experiments are conducted on a variety of objects to measure the force needed to reliably grip and hold the object. Test results show that the gripper can successfully grip objects with varying shape, dimensions, and textures. It is promising that the gripper can be used for grasping fragile objects in the industry or out in the field, and also grasping the marine organisms without hurting them.
Using the embedded-atom method, the structure of small copper clusters on Au(111) electrodes has been investigated both by static and dynamic calculations. By varying the size of roughly circular clusters, the edge energy per atom is obtained; it agrees quite well with estimates based on experimental results. Small three-dimensional clusters tend to have the shape of a pyramid, whose sides are oriented in the directions of small surface energy. The presence of a cluster is found to distort the underlying lattice of adsorbed copper atoms.
