Optically hyperpolarized $^{129}$Xe gas has become a powerful contrast agent in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and imaging, with applications ranging from studies of the human lung to the targeted detection of biomolecules. Equally attractive is its potential use to enhance the sensitivity of microfluidic NMR experiments, in which small sample volumes yield poor sensitivity. Unfortunately, most $^{129}$Xe polarization systems are large and non-portable. Here we present a microfabricated chip that optically polarizes $^{129}$Xe gas. We have achieved $^{129}$Xe polarizations greater than 0.5$%$ at flow rates of several microliters per second, compatible with typical microfluidic applications. We employ in situ optical magnetometry to sensitively detect and characterize the $^{129}$Xe polarization at magnetic fields of 1 $mu$T. We construct the device using standard microfabrication techniques, which will facilitate its integration with existing microfluidic platforms. This device may enable the implementation of highly sensitive $^{129}$Xe NMR in compact, low-cost, portable devices.

The optical properties of LXe in the vacuum ultra violet (VUV), determining the performance of a scintillation calorimeter, are discussed in detail. The available data, measured in a wider spectral region from visible to UV light, and in a large range of Xe densities, from gas to liquid, are examined. It is shown that this information can be used for deriving the LXe optical properties in the VUV. A comparison is made with the few direct measurements in LXe for VUV light resulting from the LXe excitation by ionizing particles. A useful relation is obtained which connects the Rayleigh scattering length to the refractive index in LXe.

We calculate interaction constants for the contributions from PT-odd scalar-pseudoscalar and tensor-pseudotensor operators to the electric dipole moment of ${}^{129}$Xe, for the first time in case of the former, using relativistic many-body theory including the effects of dynamical electron correlations. These interaction constants are necessary ingredients to relating the corresponding measurements to fundamental parameters in models of physics beyond the Standard Model. We obtain $alpha_{C_S} = left( 0.71 pm 0.18 right) [10^{-23}, e~text{cm}]$ and $alpha_{C_T}= left( 0.520 pm 0.049 right) [10^{-20}, left<Sigmaright>_{text{Xe}}, e~text{cm}]$, respectively. We apply our results to test a phenomenological relation between the two quantities, commonly used in the literature, and discuss their present and future phenomenological impact.
Most atomic physics experiments are controlled by a digital pattern generator used to synchronize all equipment by providing triggers and clocks. Recently, the availability of well-documented open-source development tools has lifted the barriers to using programmable systems on chip (PSoC), making them a convenient and versatile tool for synthesizing digital patterns. Here, we take advantage of these advancements in the design of a versatile clock and pattern generator using a PSoC. We present our design with the intent of highlighting the new possibilities that PSoCs have to offer in terms of flexibility. We provide a robust hardware carrier and basic firmware implementation that can be expanded and modified for other uses.
The sudden rise of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic early 2020 throughout the world has called into drastic action measures to do instant detection and reduce the spread rate. The common diagnostics testing methods has been only partially effective in satisfying the booming demand for fast detection methods to contain the further spread. However, the point-of-risk accurate diagnosis of this new emerging viral infection is paramount as simultaneous normal working operation and dealing with symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 can become the norm for years to come. Sensitive cost-effective biosensor with mass production capability is crucial throughout the world until a universal vaccination become available. Optical label-free biosensors can provide a non-invasive, extremely sensitive rapid detection technique up to ~1 fM concentration along with few minutes sensing. These biosensors can be manufactured on a mass-scale (billions) to detect the COVID-19 viral load in nasal, saliva, urinal, and serological samples even if the infected person is asymptotic. Methods investigated here are the most advanced available platforms for biosensing optical devices resulted from the integration of state-of-the-art designs and materials. These approaches are including but not limited to integrated optical devices, plasmonic resonance and also emerging nanomaterial biosensors. The lab-on-a-chip platforms examined here are suitable not only for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein detection but also other contagious virions such as influenza, and middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS).
We report on an ultralow noise optical frequency transfer from a remotely located Sr optical lattice clock laser to a Ti:Sapphire optical frequency comb through telecom-wavelength optical fiber networks. The inherent narrow linewidth of the Ti:Sapphire optical frequency comb eliminates the need for a local reference high-finesse cavity. The relative fractional frequency instability of the optical frequency comb with respect to the remote optical reference was $6.7(1) times 10^{-18}$ at 1 s and $1.05(3) times 10^{-19}$ at 1,000 s including a 2.9 km-long fiber network. This ensured the optical frequency comb had the same precision as the optical standard. Our result paves the way for ultrahigh-precision spectroscopy and conversion of the highly precise optical frequency to radio frequencies in a simpler setup.
