Magnetism in SmPd2Al3 was investigated on a single crystal by magnetometry and neutron diffraction. SmPd2Al3 represents a distinctive example of the Sm magnetism exhibiting complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures with four consecutive magnetic phase transitions at 3.4, 3.9, 4.3 and 12.5 K. The rich magnetic phase diagram of this compound reflects the specific features of the Sm3+ ion, namely the energy nearness of the ground-state multiplet J = 5/2 and the first excited multiplet J = 7/2 in conjunction with strong crystal field influence. Consequently, a significantly reduced Sm magnetic moment in comparison with the theoretical Sm3+ free-ion value is observed. Despite the strong neutron absorption by natural samarium and the small Sm magnetic moment (~ 0.2 {mu}B) we have successfully determined the magnetic k-vector (1/3, 1/3, 0) of the phase existing in the temperature interval 12.5 - 4.3 K. This observation classifies the SmPd2Al3 compound as a magnetically frustrated system. The complex magnetic behavior of this material is further illustrated by kinetic effects of the magnetization inducing rather complicated magnetic structure with various metastable states.

This work examines the critical anisotropy required for the local stability of the collinear ground states of a geometrically-frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLA). Using a Holstein-Primakoff expansion, we calculate the spin-wave frequencies for the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8-sublattice (SL) ground states of a TLA with up to third neighbor interactions. Local stability requires that all spin-wave frequencies are real and positive. The 2, 4, and 8-SL phases break up into several regions where the critical anisotropy is a different function of the exchange parameters. We find that the critical anisotropy is a continuous function everywhere except across the 2-SL/3-SL and 3-SL/4-SL phase boundaries, where the 3-SL phase has the higher critical anisotropy.
The magnetic, thermal and transport properties as well as electronic band structure of MnPtSi are reported. MnPtSi is a metal that undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at $T_{mathrm{C}}=340$(1) K and a spin-reorientation transition at $T_{mathrm{N}}=326$(1) K to an antiferromagnetic phase. First-principles electronic structure calculations indicate a not-fully polarized spin state of Mn in a $d^5$ electron configuration with $J=S=3$/2, in agreement with the saturation magnetization of 3~$mu_{mathrm{B}}$ in the ordered state and the observed paramagnetic effective moment. A sizeable anomalous Hall effect in the antiferromagnetic phase alongside the computational study suggests that the antiferromagnetic structure is non-collinear. Based on thermodynamic and resistivity data we construct a magnetic phase diagram. Magnetization curves $M$($H$) at low temperatures reveal a metamagnetic transition of spin-flop type. The spin-flopped phase terminates at a critical point with $T_{mathrm{cr}}approx 300$ K and $H_{mathrm{cr}}approx 10$ kOe, near which a peak of the magnetocaloric entropy change is observed. Using Arrott plot analysis and magnetoresistivity data we argue that the metamagnetic transition is of a first-order type, whereas the strong field dependence of $T_{mathrm{N}}$ and the linear relationship of the $T_{mathrm{N}}$ with $M^2$ hint at its magnetoelastic nature.
The spin wave excitations of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLA) $rm CuFeO_2$ have been measured using high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Antiferromagnetic interactions up to third nearest neighbors in the ab plane (J_1, J_2, J_3, with $J_2/J_1 approx 0.44$ and $J_3/J_1 approx 0.57$), as well as out-of-plane coupling (J_z, with $J_z/J_1 approx 0.29$) are required to describe the spin wave dispersion relations, indicating a three dimensional character of the magnetic interactions. Two energy dips in the spin wave dispersion occur at the incommensurate wavevectors associated with multiferroic phase, and can be interpreted as dynamic precursors to the magnetoelectric behavior in this system.
The results of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility isothermal magnetization and heat-capacity measurements as a function of temperature (T) are reported for Sr3NiRhO6 and Sr3NiPtO6 containing magnetic chains arranged in a triangular fashion in the basal plane and crystallizing in K4CdCl6-derived rhombohedral structure. The results establish that both the compounds are magnetically frustrated, however in different ways. In the case of the Rh compound, the susceptibility data reveal that there are two magnetic transitions, one in the range 10 -15 K and the other appearing as a smooth crossover near 45 K, with a large frequency dependence of ac susceptibility in the range 10 to 40 K; in addition, the features in C(T) are smeared out at these temperatures. The magnetic properties are comparable to those of previously known few compounds with partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure. On the other hand, for Sr3NiPtO6, there is no evidence for long-range magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K despite large value of paramagnetic Curie temperature.
We present the results of the magnetization and dielectric constant measurements on untwinned single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu_2O_2. Novel magnetic phase transitions were observed. A spin flop transition of the spiral spin plane was observed for the field orientations H||a,b. The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain system.
