Brane world six dimensional scenarios with string like metric has been proposed to alleviate the problem of field localization. However, these models have been suffering from some drawbacks related with energy conditions as well as from difficulties to find analytical solutions. In this work, we propose a model where a brane is made of a scalar field with bounce-type configurations and embedded in a bulk with a string-like metric. This model produces a sound AdS scenario where none of the important physical quantities is infinite. Among these quantities are the components of the energy momentum tensor, which have its positivity ensured by a suitable choice of the bounce configurations. Another advantage of this model is that the warp factor can be obtained analytically from the equations of motion for the scalar field, obtaining as a result a thick brane configuration, in a six dimensional context. Moreover, the study of the scalar field localization in these scenario is done.

The main goal of this work is to pursue an investigation of cosmic string configurations focusing on possible consequences of the Lorentz-symmetry breaking by a background vector. We analyze the possibility of cosmic strings as a viable source for fermionic Cold Dark Matter particles. Whenever the latter are charged and have mass of the order of $10^{13}GeV$, we propose they could decay into usual cosmic rays. We have also contemplated the sector of neutral particles generated in our model. Indeed, being neutral, these particles are hard to be detected; however, by virtue of the Lorentz-symmetry breaking background vector, it is possible that they may present an electromagnetic interaction with a significant magnetic moment.
Gravitational backgrounds in d+2 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to Lifshitz-like theories describing critical phenomena in d+1 dimensions with critical exponent zgeq 1. We numerically explore a dilaton-Einstein-Maxwell model admitting such backgrounds as solutions. Such backgrounds are characterized by a temperature T and chemical potential mu, and we find how to embed these solutions into AdS for a range of values of z and d. We find no thermal instability going from the (Tllmu) to the (Tggmu) regimes, regardless of the dimension, and find that the solutions smoothly interpolate between the Lifshitz-like behaviour and the relativistic AdS-like behaviour. We exploit some conserved quantities to find a relationship between the energy density E, entropy density s, and number density n, E=frac{d}{d+1}(Ts+nmu), as is required by the isometries of AdS_{d+2}. Finally, in the (Tllmu) regime the entropy density is found to satisfy a power law s propto c T^{d/z} mu^{(z-1)d/z}, and we numerically explore the dependence of the constant c, a measure of the number of degrees of freedom, on d and z.
We derive the low-energy effective theory of gravity for a generalized Randall-Sundrum scenario, allowing for a third self-gravitating brane to live in the 5D bulk spacetime. At zero order the 5D spacetime is composed of two slices of anti-de Sitter spacetime, each with a different curvature scale, and the 5D Weyl tensor vanishes. Two boundary branes are at the fixed points of the orbifold whereas the third brane is free to move in the bulk. At first order, the third brane breaks the otherwise continuous evolution of the projection of the Weyl tensor normal to the branes. We derive a junction condition for the projected Weyl tensor across the bulk brane, and combining this constraint with the junction condition for the extrinsic curvature tensor, allows us to derive the first-order field equations on the middle brane. The effective theory is a generalized Brans-Dicke theory with two scalar fields. This is conformally equivalent to Einstein gravity and two scalar fields, minimally coupled to the geometry, but nonminimally coupled to matter on the three branes.
In this paper we present two (a priori independent) derivations of the eikonal operator in string-brane scattering. The first one is obtained by summing surfaces with any number of boundaries, while in the second one the eikonal operator is derived from the three-string vertex in a suitable light-cone gauge. This second derivation shows that the bosonic oscillators present in the leading eikonal operator are to be identified with the string bosonic oscillators in a suitable light-cone gauge, while the first one shows that it exponentiates recovering unitarity. This paper is a review of results obtained in two previous publications of the same authors.

We study the cosmological evolution of a D3-brane Universe in a type 0 string background. We follow the brane universe along the radial coordinate of the background and we calculate the energy density which is induced on the brane because of its motion in the bulk. For constant values of tachyon and dilaton an inflationary phase is appearing. For non constant values of tachyon and dilaton and for a particular range of values of the scale factor of the brane-universe, the effective energy density is dominated by a term proportional to $frac{1}{(logalpha)^{4}}$ indicating a slowly varying inflationary phase.
