Context: This is the first of a series of papers presenting VLBI observations of the 293 Caltech-Jodrell Bank Flat-Spectrum (hereafter CJF) sources and their analysis. Aims: One of the major goals of the CJF is to make a statistical study of the apparent velocities of the sources. Methods: We have conducted global VLBI and VLBA observations at 5 GHz since 1990, accumulating thirteen separate observing campaigns. Results: We present here an overview of the observations, give details of the data reduction and present the source parameters resulting from a model-fitting procedure. For every source at every observing epoch, an image is shown, built up by restoring the model-fitted components, convolved with the clean beam, into the residual image, which was made by Fourier transforming the visibility data after first subtracting the model-fitted components in the uv-plane. Overplotted we show symbols to represent the model components. Conclusions: We have produced VLBI images of all but 5 of the 293 sources in the complete CJF sample at several epochs and investigated the kinematics of 266 AGN.

Context: This is the second of a series of papers presenting VLBI observations of the 293 Caltech-Jodrell Bank Flat-Spectrum (hereafter CJF) sources and their analysis. Aims: To obtain a consistent motion dataset large enough to allow the systematic properties of the population to be studied. Methods: We present the detailed kinematic analysis of the complete flux-density limited CJF survey. We computed 2-D kinematic models based on the optimal model-fitting parameters of multi-epoch VLBA observations. This allows us to calculate not only radial, but also orthogonal motions, and thus to study curvature and acceleration. Statistical tests of the motions measured and their reliability have been performed. A correlation analysis between the derived apparent motions, luminosities, spectral indices, and core dominance and the resulting consequences is described. Results: With at least one velocity in each of 237 sources, this sample is much larger than any available before and allows a meaningful statistical investigation of apparent motions and any possible correlations with other parameters in AGN jets. Conclusions: This AGN survey provides the basis for any statistical analysis of jet and jet-component properties.

We report the results of a 5 GHz southern hemisphere VLBI survey of compact extragalactic radio sources. These observations were undertaken with the SHEVE array plus Shanghai station in November 1992. A sample of 22 sources was observed and images of 20 of them were obtained. Of the 20 sources imaged, 15 showed core-jet structure, one had a two-sided jet and 4 had only single compact cores. Eleven of the 16 core-jet (including one two-sided jet) sources show some evidence of bent jets. No compact doubles were found. A comparison with previous images and the temporal variability of the radio flux density showed evidence for superluminal motion in 4 of the sources. Five sources were high energy (>100 MeV) gamma-ray sources. Statistical analysis showed the dominance of highly polarized quasars among the detected gamma-ray sources, which emphasizes the importance of beaming effect in the gamma-ray emission.
In a rare and spectacular display, two well-known massive star forming regions, W49N and G25.65+1.05, recently underwent maser super burst - their fluxes suddenly increasing above 30,000 and 18,000 Jy, respectively, reaching several orders of magnitude above their usual values. In quick-response, ToO observations with the EVN, VLBA and KaVA were obtained constituting a 4 week campaign - producing a high-cadence multi-epoch VLBI investigation of the maser emission. The combination of high-resolution, polarisation and flux monitoring during the burst provides one of the best accounts, to date, of the maser super burst phenomenon, aiding their use as astrophysical tools. These proceedings contain the preliminary results of our campaign.

We present U, B, V, I broad-band, 6200A TiO medium-band and Halpha photometry of the Orion Nebula Cluster obtained with the WFI imager at the ESO/MPI 2.2 telescope. The nearly-simultaneous observations cover the entire ONC in a field of about 34x34 arcmin. They enable us to determine stellar colors avoiding the additional scatter in the photometry induced by stellar variability typical of pre-main sequence stars. We identify 2,612 point-like sources in I band, 58%, 43% and 17% of them detected also in V, B and U, respectively. 1040 sources are identified in Halpha band. In this paper we present the observations, the calibration techniques, and the resulting catalog. We show the derived CMD of the population and discuss the completeness of our photometry. We define a spectro-photometric TiO index from the fluxes in V, I, and TiO-band. We find a correlation between the index and the spectral type valid for M-type stars, that is accurate to better than 1 spectral sub-class for M3-M6 types and better than 2 spectral subclasses for M0-M2 types. This allows us to newly classify 217 stars. We subtract from our Halpha photometry the photospheric continuum at its wavelength, deriving calibrated line excess for the full sample. This represents the largest Halpha star catalog obtained to date on the ONC. This data set enables a full re-analysis of the properties of the Pre-Main Sequence population in the Orion Nebula Cluster to be presented, in an accompanying paper.
