The gradient-flow dynamics of an arbitrary geometric quantity is derived using a generalization of Darcys Law. We consider flows in both Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations. The Lagrangian formulation includes a dissipative modification of fluid mechanics. Eulerian equations for self-organization of scalars, 1-forms and 2-forms are shown to reduce to nonlocal characteristic equations. We identify singular solutions of these equations corresponding to collapsed (clumped) states and discuss their evolution.

Time-dependent Hamiltonian dynamics is derived for a curve (molecular strand) in $mathbb{R}^3$ that experiences both nonlocal (for example, electrostatic) and elastic interactions. The dynamical equations in the symmetry-reduced variables are written on the dual of the semidirect-product Lie algebra $so(3) circledS (mathbb{R}^3oplusmathbb{R}^3oplusmathbb{R}^3oplusmathbb{R}^3)$ with three 2-cocycles. We also demonstrate that the nonlocal interaction produces an interesting new term deriving from the coadjoint action of the Lie group SO(3) on its Lie algebra $so(3)$. The new filament equations are written in conservative form by using the corresponding coadjoint actions.
We investigate the emergence of singular solutions in a non-local model for a magnetic system. We study a modified Gilbert-type equation for the magnetization vector and find that the evolution depends strongly on the length scales of the non-local effects. We pass to a coupled density-magnetization model and perform a linear stability analysis, noting the effect of the length scales of non-locality on the systems stability properties. We carry out numerical simulations of the coupled system and find that singular solutions emerge from smooth initial data. The singular solutions represent a collection of interacting particles (clumpons). By restricting ourselves to the two-clumpon case, we are reduced to a two-dimensional dynamical system that is readily analyzed, and thus we classify the different clumpon interactions possible.
We prove the existence of weak solutions to a system of two diffusion equations that are coupled by a pointwise volume constraint. The time evolution is given by gradient dynamics for a free energy functional. Our primary example is a model for the demixing of polymers, the corresponding energy is the one of Flory, Huggins and deGennes. Due to the non-locality in the equations, the dynamics considered here is qualitatively different from the one found in the formally related Cahn-Hilliard equations. Our angle of attack is from the theory of optimal mass transport, that is, we consider the evolution equations for the two components as two gradient flows in the Wasserstein distance with one joint energy functional that has the volume constraint built in. The main difference to our previous work arXiv:1712.06446 is the nonlinearity of the energy density in the gradient part, which becomes singular at the interface between pure and mixed phases.

Cycling is a green transportation mode, and is promoted by many governments to mitigate traffic congestion. However, studies concerning the traffic dynamics of bicycle flow are very limited. This study experimentally investigated bicycle flow dynamics on a wide road, modeled using a 3-m-wide track. The results showed that the bicycle flow rate remained nearly constant across a wide range of densities, in marked contrast to single-file bicycle flow, which exhibits a unimodal fundamental diagram. By studying the weight density of the radial locations of cyclists, we argue that this behavior arises from the formation of more lanes with the increase of global density. The extra lanes prevent the longitudinal density from increasing as quickly as in single-file bicycle flow. When the density is larger than 0.5 bicycles/m2, the flow rate begins to decrease, and stop-and-go traffic emerges. A cognitive-science-based model to reproduce bicycle dynamics is proposed, in which cyclists apply simple cognitive procedures to adapt their target directions and desired riding speeds. To incorporate differences in acceleration, deceleration, and turning, different relaxation times are used. The model can reproduce the experimental results acceptably well and may also provide guidance on infrastructure design.

This paper studies the Sobolev regularity estimates of weak solutions of a class of singular quasi-linear elliptic problems of the form $u_t - mbox{div}[mathbb{A}(x,t,u, abla u)]= mbox{div}[{mathbf F}]$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions over bounded spatial domains. Our main focus is on the case that the vector coefficients $mathbb{A}$ are discontinuous and singular in $(x,t)$-variables, and dependent on the solution $u$. Global and interior weighted $W^{1,p}(Omega, omega)$-regularity estimates are established for weak solutions of these equations, where $omega$ is a weight function in some Muckenhoupt class of weights. The results obtained are even new for linear equations, and for $omega =1$, because of the singularity of the coefficients in $(x,t)$-variables
