We present new results on the X-ray spectroscopy of multicharged argon, sulfur and chlorine obtained with the Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Trap (ECRIT) in operation at the Paul Scherrer Institut (Villigen, Switzerland). We used a Johann-type Bragg spectrometer with a spherically-bent crystal, with an energy resolution of about 0.4 eV. The ECRIT itself is of a hybrid type, with a superconducting split coil magnet, special iron inserts which provides the mirror field, and a permanent magnetic hexapole. The high frequency was provided by a 6.4 GHz microwave emitter. We obtained high intensity X-ray spectra of multicharged F-like to He-like argon, sulfur and chlorine with one 1s hole. In particular, we observed the $1s2s^{3}S_1 to 1s^2^{1}S_0 M1$ and $1s2p^{3}P_2 to 1s^2^{1}S_0 M2$ transitions in He-like argon, sulfur and chlorine with unprecedented statistics and resolution. The energies of the observed lines are being determined with good accuracy using the He-like M1 line as a reference.

We performed a reference-free measurement of the transition energies of the $1s 2p,^1P_1to 1s^2 ,^1S_0$ line in He-like argon, and of the $1s 2s^2 2p,^1P_1to 1s^2 2s^2,^1S_0$ line in Be-like argon ions. The highly-charged ions were produced in the plasma of an Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source. Both energy measurements were performed with an accuracy better than 3 parts in $10^6$, using a double flat-crystal spectrometer, without reference to any theoretical or experimental energy. The $1s 2s^2 2p,^1P_1to 1s^2 2s^2,^1S_0$ transition measurement is the first reference-free measurement for this core-excited transition. The $1s 2p,^1P_1to 1s^2 ,^1S_0$ transition measurement confirms recent measurement performed at the Heidelberg Electron-Beam Ion Trap (EBIT). The width measurement in the He-like transition provides test of a purely radiative decay calculations. In the case of the Be-like argon transition, the width results from the sum of a radiative channel and three main Auger channels. We also performed Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations of transition energies and rates and have done an extensive comparison with theory and other experimental data. For both measurements reported here, we find agreement with the most recent theoretical calculations within the combined theoretical and experimental uncertainties.
We present a theoretical investigation of dielectronic recombination (DR) of Ar-like ions that sheds new light on the behavior of the rate coefficient at low-temperatures where these ions form in photoionized plasmas. We provide results for the total and partial Maxwellian-averaged DR rate coefficients from the initial ground level of K II -- Zn XIII ions. It is expected that these new results will advance the accuracy of the ionization balance for Ar-like M-shell ions and pave the way towards a detailed modeling of astrophysically relevant X-ray absorption features. We utilize the AUTOSTRUCTURE computer code to obtain the accurate core-excitation thresholds in target ions and carry out multiconfiguration Breit-Pauli (MCBP) calculations of the DR cross section in the independent-processes, isolated-resonance, distorted-wave (IPIRDW) approximation. Our results mediate the complete absence of direct DR calculations for certain Ar-like ions and question the reliability of the existing empirical rate formulas, often inferred from renormalized data within this isoelectronic sequence.

The interelectronic-interaction effect on the transition probabilities in high-Z He-like ions is investigated within a systematic quantum electrodynamic approach. The calculation formulas for the interelectronic-interaction corrections of first order in 1/Z are derived using the two-time Green function method. These formulas are employed for numerical evaluations of the magnetic transition probabilities in heliumlike ions. The results of the calculations are compared with experimental values and previous calculations.
A general formalism is used to express the long-range potential energies in inverse powers of the separation distance between two like atomic or molecular systems with $P$ symmetries. The long-range molecular interaction coefficients are calculated for the molecular symmetries $Delta$, $Pi$, and $Sigma$, arising from the following interactions: He($2 ^1P$)--He($2 ^1P$), He($2 ^1P$)--He($2 ^3P$), and He($2 ^3P$)--He($2 ^3P$). The electric quadrupole-quadrupole term, $C_{5}$, the van der Waals (dispersion) term $C_{6}$, and higher-order terms, $C_{8}$, and $C_{10}$, are calculated textit{ab initio} using accurate variational wave functions in Hylleraas coordinates with finite nuclear mass effects. A comparison is made with previously published results where available.

We investigate the influence of relativistic nondipole effects on the photoelectron spectra of argon, particularly in the low kinetic energy region (0 eV - 5 eV). In our experiment, we use intense linearly polarised 800 nm laser pulse to ionise Ar from a jet and we record photoelectron energy and momentum distributions using a reaction microscope (REMI). Our measurements show that nondipole effect can cause an energy-dependent asymmetry along the laser propagation direction in the photoelectron energy and momentum spectra. Model simulation based on time-dependent Dirac equation (TDDE) can reproduce our measurement results. The electron trajectory analysis based on classical model reveals that the photoelectron which obtains negative momentum shift along laser propagation direction is caused by the interplay between the Lorenz force induced radiation pressure during its free propagation in continuum and re-scattering by Coulomb potential of the parent ion when it is driven back by the laser field.
