It is shown experimentally that vertical pairing of two identical microspheres suspended in the sheath of a radio-frequency (rf) discharge at low gas pressures (a few Pa), appears at a well defined instability threshold of the rf power. The transition is reversible, but with significant hysteresis on the second stage. A simple model, which uses measured microsphere resonance frequencies and takes into account besides Coulomb interaction between negatively charged microspheres also their interaction with positive ion wake charges, seems to explain the instability threshold quite well.

A nonlinear model of modulational processes in the subsonic regime involving a linearly unstable wave and two linearly damped waves with different damping rates in a plasma is studied numerically. We compute the maximum Lyapunov exponent as a function of the damping rates in a two-parameter space, and identify shrimp-shaped self-similar structures in the parameter space. By varying the damping rate of the low-frequency wave, we construct bifurcation diagrams and focus on a saddle-node bifurcation and an interior crisis associated with a periodic window. We detect chaotic saddles and their stable and unstable manifolds, and demonstrate how the connection between two chaotic saddles via coupling unstable periodic orbits can result in a crisis-induced intermittency. The relevance of this work for the understanding of modulational processes observed in plasmas and fluids is discussed.
The sheath formation in a weakly magnetized collisionless electronegative plasma consisting of electrons, negative and positive ions has been numerically investigated using the hydrodynamic equations. The electrons and negative ions are assumed to follow Boltzmann relation. A sheath formation criterion has been analytically derived. The paper focuses on studying the sheath structure by varying the electronegativity. It has been observed that the presence of negative ions has a substantial effect on the sheath structure. The observations made in the present work have profound significance on processing plasmas, especially in the semiconductor industry as well as in fusion studies.
In this paper non-linear dynamics of a periodically forced excitable glow discharge plasma has been studied. The experiments were performed in glow discharge plasma where excitability was achieved for suitable discharge voltage and gas pressure. The plasma was first perturbed by a sub-threshold sawtooth periodic signal, and we obtained small sub-threshold oscillations. These oscillations showed resonance when the frequency of the perturbation was around the characteristic frequency the plasma, and hence may be useful to estimate characteristic of an excitable system. On the other hand, when the perturbation was supra-threshold, system showed frequency entrainments. We obtained harmonic frequency entrainments for perturbation frequency greater than the characteristic frequency of the system and for lesser than the characteristic frequency, system showed only excitable behaviour.
We probe the theoretical connection among three different approaches to analyze the entanglement of identical particles, i.e., the first quantization language (1QL), elementary-symmetric/exterior products (which has the mathematical equivalence to no-labeling approaches), and the algebraic approach based on the GNS construction. Among several methods to quantify the entanglement of identical particles, we focus on the computation of reduced density matrices, which can be achieved by the concept of emph{symmetrized partial trace} defined in 1QL. We show that the symmetrized partial trace corresponds to the interior product in symmetric and exterior algebra (SEA), which also corresponds to the subalgebra restriction in the algebraic approach based on GNS representation. Our research bridges different viewpoints for understanding the quantum correlation of identical particles in a consistent manner.

We identify the correlation in a state of two identical particles as the residual information beyond what is already contained in the 1-particle reduced density matrix, and propose a correlation measure based on the maximum entropy principle. We obtain the analytical results of the correlation measure, which make it computable for arbitrary two-particle states. We also show that the degrees of correlation in the same two-particle states with different particle types will decrease in the following order: bosons, fermions, and distinguishable particles.
