This is the text of a series of five lectures given by the author at the Second Annual Spring Institute on Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras held at Vanderbilt University in May 2004. It is meant as an overview of recent results illustrating the interplay between noncommutative geometry and arithmetic geometry/number theory.

We prove a Koszul formula for the Levi-Civita connection for any pseudo-Riemannian bilinear metric on a class of centered bimodule of noncommutative one-forms. As an application to the Koszul formula, we show that our Levi-Civita connection is a bimodule connection. We construct a spectral triple on a fuzzy sphere and compute the scalar curvature for the Levi-Civita connection associated to a canonical metric.

We formulate a quantum generalization of the notion of the group of Riemannian isometries for a compact Riemannian manifold, by introducing a natural notion of smooth and isometric action by a compact quantum group on a classical or noncommutative ma nifold described by spectral triples, and then proving the existence of a universal object (called the quantum isometry group) in the category of compact quantum groups acting smoothly and isometrically on a given (possibly noncommutative) manifold satisfying certain regularity assumptions. In fact, we identify the quantum isometry group with the universal object in a bigger category, namely the category of `quantum families of smooth isometries, defined along the line of Woronowicz and Soltan. We also construct a spectral triple on the Hilbert space of forms on a noncommutative manifold which is equivariant with respect to a natural unitary representation of the quantum isometry group. We give explicit description of quantum isometry groups of commutative and noncommutative tori, and in this context, obtain the quantum double torus defined in cite{hajac} as the universal quantum group of holomorphic isometries of the noncommutative torus.

Linear wave solutions to the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima partial differential equation with periodic boundary conditions have two physical interpretations: Rossby (atmospheric) waves, and drift (plasma) waves in a tokamak. These waves display resonance in triads. In the case of infinite Rossby deformation radius, the set of resonant triads may be described as the set of integer solutions to a particular homogeneous Diophantine equation, or as the set of rational points on a projective surface. We give a rational parametrization of the smooth points on this surface, answering the question: What are all resonant triads? We also give a fiberwise description, yielding a procedure to answer the question: For fixed $r in mathbb{Q}$, what are all wavevectors $(x,y)$ that resonate with a wavevector $(a,b)$ with $a/b = r$?
We compute some arithmetic path integrals for BF-theory over the ring of integers of a totally imaginary field, which evaluate to natural arithmetic invariants associated to $mathbb{G}_m$ and abelian varieties.

We derive a number of results related to the Gaudin model associated to the simple Lie algebra of type G$_2$. We compute explicit formulas for solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations associated to the tensor product of an arbitrary finite-dimensional irreducible module and the vector representation. We use this result to show that the Bethe ansatz is complete in any tensor product where all but one factor are vector representations and the evaluation parameters are generic. We show that the points of the spectrum of the Gaudin model in type G$_2$ are in a bijective correspondence with self-self-dual spaces of polynomials. We study the set of all self-self-dual spaces - the self-self-dual Grassmannian. We establish a stratification of the self-self-dual Grassmannian with the strata labeled by unordered sets of dominant integral weights and unordered sets of nonnegative integers, satisfying certain explicit conditions. We describe closures of the strata in terms of representation theory.
