A microscopic theory of superconductivity is formulated within an effective $p$-$d$ Hubbard model for a CuO2 plane. By applying the Mori-type projection technique, the Dyson equation is derived for the Green functions in terms of Hubbard operators. The antiferromagnetic exchange caused by interband hopping results in pairing of all carries in the conduction subband and high Tc proportional to the Fermi energy. Kinematic interaction in intraband hopping is responsible for the conventional spin-fluctuation pairing. Numerical solution of the gap equation proves the d-wave gap symmetry and defines Tc doping dependence. Oxygen isotope shift and pressure dependence of Tc are also discussed.
To understand the origin of unconventional charge-density-wave (CDW) states in cuprate superconductors, we establish the self-consistent CDW equation, and analyze the CDW instabilities based on the realistic Hubbard model, without assuming any $q$-dependence and the form factor. Many higher-order many-body processes, which are called the vertex corrections, are systematically generated by solving the CDW equation. When the spin fluctuations are strong, the uniform $q=0$ nematic CDW with $d$-form factor shows the leading instability. The axial nematic CDW instability at $q = Q_a = (delta,0)$ ($delta approx pi/2$) is the second strongest, and its strength increases under the static uniform CDW order. The present theory predicts that uniform CDW transition emerges at a high temperature, and it stabilize the axial $q = Q_a$ CDW at $T = T_{CDW}$. It is confirmed that the higher-order Aslamazov-Larkin processes cause the CDW orders at both $q = 0$ and $Q_a$.
We propose a microscopical theory of superconductivity in CuO$_2$ layer within the effective two-band Hubbard model in the strong correlation limit. By applying a projection technique for the matrix Green function in terms of the Hubbard operators, the Dyson equation is derived. It is proved that in the mean-field approximation d-wave superconducting pairing mediated by the conventional exchange interaction occurs. Allowing for the self-energy corrections due to kinematic interaction, a spin-fluctuation d-wave pairing is also obtained. $Tsb{c}$ dependence on the hole concentration and $bf k$-dependence of the gap function are derived. The results show that the exchange interaction (which stems from the interband hopping) prevails over the kinematic interaction (which stems from the intraband hopping).
In cuprate superconductors, superconductivity appears below the CDW transition temperature $T_{CDW}$. However, many-body electronic states under the CDW order are still far from understood. Here, we study the development of the spin fluctuations under the presence of $d$-wave bond order (BO) with wavevector $q=(pi/2,0),(0,pi/2)$, which is derived from the paramagnon interference mechanism in recent theoretical studies. Based on the $4 times 1$ and $4 times 4$ cluster Hubbard models, the feedback effects between spin susceptibility and self-energy are calculated self-consistently by using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation. It is found that the $d$-wave BO leads to a sizable suppression of the nuclear magnetic relaxation rate $1/T_1$. In contrast, the reduction in $T_c$ is small, since the static susceptibility $chi^s(Q_s)$ is affected by the BO just slightly. It is verified that the $d$-wave BO scenario is consistent with the experimental electronic properties below $T_{CDW}$.
The presence of optical polarization anisotropies, such as Faraday/Kerr effects, linear birefringence, and magnetoelectric birefringence are evidence for broken symmetry states of matter. The recent discovery of a Kerr effect using near-IR light in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates can be regarded as a strong evidence for a spontaneous symmetry breaking and the existence of an anomalous long-range ordered state. In this work we present a high precision study of the polarimetry properties of the cuprates in the THz regime. While no Faraday effect was found in this frequency range to the limits of our experimental uncertainty (1.3 milli-radian or 0.07$^circ$), a small but significant polarization rotation was detected that derives from an anomalous linear dichroism. In YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ the effect has a temperature onset that mirrors the pseudogap temperature T$^*$ and is enhanced in magnitude in underdoped samples. In $x=1/8$ La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_4$, the effect onsets above room temperature, but shows a dramatic enhancement near a temperature scale known to be associated with spin and charge ordered states. These features are consistent with a loss of both C$_4$ rotation and mirror symmetry in the electronic structure of the CuO$_2$ planes in the pseudogap state.
We show that the pinning of collective charge and spin modes by impurities in the cuprate superconductors leads to qualitatively different fingerprints in the local density of states (LDOS). In particular, in a pinned (static) spin droplet, the creation of a resonant impurity state is suppressed, the spin-resolved LDOS exhibits a characteristic spatial pattern, and the LDOS undergoes significant changes with increasing magnetic field. Since all of these fingerprints are absent in a charge droplet, impurities are a new probe for identifying the nature and relative strength of collective modes.
