We measure the absorption spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We focus on the absorption spectrum into the lowest Landau Level around nu=1. We find that the spectrum consists of bound electron-hole complexes, trion and exciton like. We show that their oscillator strength is a powerful probe of the 2DES spatial correlations. We find that near nu=1 the 2DES ground state consists of Skyrmions of small size (a few magnetic lengths).

We present a comprehensive analysis of high resolution neutron scattering data involving Neutron Spin Echo spectroscopy and Spherical Polarimetry which confirm the first order nature of the helical transition and reveal the existence of a new spin liquid skyrmion phase. Similar to the blue phases of liquid crystals this phase appears in a very narrow temperature range between the low temperature helical and the high temperature paramagnetic phases.
It was recently suggested that the topology of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphenes (MATBG) flat bands could provide a novel mechanism for superconductivity distinct from both weakly-coupled BCS theory and the $d$-wave phenomenology of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. In this work, we examine this possibility using a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of a model which captures the essential features of MATBGs symmetry and topology. Using large scale cylinder-DMRG calculations to obtain the ground state and its excitations as a function of the electron doping, we find clear evidence for superconductivity driven by the binding of electrons into charge-$2e$ skyrmions. Remarkably, this binding is observed even in the regime where the unscreened Coulomb repulsion is by-far the largest energy scale, demonstrating the robustness of this topological, all-electronic pairing mechanism.
Skyrmions represent topologically stable field configurations with particle-like properties. We used neutron scattering to observe the spontaneous formation of a two-dimensional lattice of skyrmion lines, a type of magnetic vortices, in the chiral itinerant-electron magnet MnSi. The skyrmion lattice stabilizes at the border between paramagnetism and long-range helimagnetic order perpendicular to a small applied magnetic field regardless of the direction of the magnetic field relative to the atomic lattice. Our study experimentally establishes magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry as an arena for new forms of crystalline order composed of topologically stable spin states.

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin structure, and their existence in ferromagnetically coupled multilayers has been reported with disordered arrangement. In these multilayers, the heavy metal spacing layers provide an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) for stabilizing skyrmions at the expense of interlayer exchanging coupling (IEC). To meet the functional requirement of ordered/designable arrangement, in this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a scenario of skyrmion nucleation using nanostructured synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) multilayers. Instead of relying on DMI, the antiferromagnetic IEC in the SAF multilayers fulfills the role of nucleation and stabilization of skyrmions. The IEC induced skyrmions were identified directly imaged with MFM and confirmed by magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements as well as micromagnetic simulation. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed skyrmion nucleation scenario was examined against temperature (from 4.5 to 300 K), device size (from 400 to 1200 nm), and different lattice designs. Hence, our results provide a synthetic skyrmion platform meeting the functional needs in magnonic and spintronic applications.
We study quantum Hall ferromagnets with a finite density topologically charged spin textures in the presence of internal degrees of freedom such as spin, valley, or layer indices, so that the system is parametrised by a $d$-component complex spinor field. In the absence of anisotropies, we find formation of a hexagonal Skyrmion lattice which completely breaks the underlying SU(d) symmetry. The ground state charge density modulation, which inevitably exists in these lattices, vanishes exponentially in $d$. We compute analytically the complete low-lying excitation spectrum, which separates into $d^{2}-1$ gapless acoustic magnetic modes and a magnetophonon. We discuss the role of effective mass anisotropy for SU(3)-valley Skyrmions relevant for experiments with AlAs quantum wells. Here, we find a transition, which breaks a six-fold rotational symmetry of a triangular lattice, followed by a formation of a square lattice at large values of anisotropy strength.
