The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder, electronic inhomogeneity, and a competing phase.

The formation of domains comprising alternating hole rich and hole poor ladders recently observed by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy by Kohsaka et al., on lightly hole doped cuprates, is interpreted in terms of an attractive mechanism which favors the presence of doped holes on Cu sites located each on one side of an oxygen atom. This mechanism leads to a geometrical pattern of alternating hole-rich and hole-poor ladders with a periodicity equal to 4 times the lattice spacing in the CuO plane, as observed experimentally. A central question in the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the fate of the parent Mott insulator upon charge doping. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the local electronic structure of lightly doped cuprate in the antiferromagnetic insulating regime. We show that the doped charge induces a spectral weight transfer from the high energy Hubbard bands to the low energy in-gap states. With increasing doping, a V-shaped density of state suppression occurs at the Fermi level, which is accompanied by the emergence of checkerboard charge order. The new STM perspective revealed here is the cuprates first become a charge ordered insulator upon doping. Subsequently, with further doping, Fermi surface and high temperature superconductivity grow out of it.
We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility in carefully detwinned La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region (x=0-0.03), which demonstrates a remarkable in-plane anisotropy of the spin system. This anisotropy is found to persist after the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order is destroyed by hole doping, suggesting that doped holes break the AF order into domains in which the spin alignment is kept essentially intact. It turns out that the freezing of the spins taking place at low temperatures is also notably anisotropic, implying that the spin-glass feature is governed by the domain structure as well.
We investigated the superconducting gap structure of SrNi$_2$P$_{2}$ ($T_c$=1.4 K) via low-temperature magneto-thermal conductivity $kappa(T,H)$ measurements. Zero field thermal conductivity $kappa$ decreases exponentially $kappa propto$ exp($-aT_c/T$) with $a$=1.5, in accord with the BCS theory, and rolls over to a phonon-like $kappapropto T^3$ behavior at low temperature, similar to a number of conventional s-wave superconductors. In addition, we observed a concave field dependence of the residual linear term $kappa_0(H)/T$. These facts strongly rule out the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap of SrNi$_2$P$_{2}$. Together with a fully gapped Fermi surface in the superconducting state of BaNi$_2$As$_{2}$ ($T_c$=0.6-0.7 K), demonstrated in our recent work, these results lead us to postulate that fully gapped superconductivity is a universal feature of Ni-based pnictide superconductors.
The discovery of charge-density wave (CDW)-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. Here, we report a comprehensive RIXS study of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) finding that CDW effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x = 0.21 before disappearing at x = 0.25. The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross-section for phonons and CDW-induced phonon-softening. We interpret our results in terms of a CDW that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the CDW-induced modification of the lattice.
