We report measurements of the phonon dispersion relations in non-superconducting, oxygen-deficient PrBa2Cu3O6+x (x ~ 0.2) by inelastic neutron scattering. The data are compared with a model of the lattice dynamics based on a common interaction potential. Good agreement is achieved for all but two phonon branches, which are significantly softer than predicted. These modes are found to arise predominantly from motion of the oxygen ions in the CuO2 planes. Analogous modes in YBa2Cu3O6 are well described by the common interaction potential model.

Superconducting MgB$_2$ shows an E$_{2g}$ zone center phonon, as measured by Raman spectroscopy, that is very broad in energy and temperature dependent. The Raman shift and lifetime show large differences with the values elsewhere in the Brillouin Zone measured by Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS), where its dispersion can be accounted for by standard harmonic phonon theory, adding only a moderate electron-phonon coupling. Here we show that the effects rapidly disappear when electron-phonon coupling is switched off by Al substitution on the Mg sites. Moreover, using IXS with very high wave-vector resolution in MgB$_2$, we can follow the dispersion connecting the Raman and the IXS signal, in agreement with a theory using only electron-phonon coupling but without strong anharmonic terms. The observation is important in order to understand the effects of electron-phonon coupling on zone center phonons modes in MgB$_2$, but also in all metals characterized by a small Fermi velocity in a particular direction, typical for layered compounds.
Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+delta}$. We investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature, and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW wave vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW wave vector of $Msimeq$ 0.36 eV, which decreases to $Msimeq$ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.
This paper describes high-energy neutron inelastic scattering measurements of propagating magnetic excitations in PrBa2Cu3O6+x (x approx 0.2 and 0.93). The measurements probe the acoustic and optic modes of the antiferromagnetically-ordered copper--oxygen bilayers in the energy range 50-150 meV. The observed magnon dispersion can be described satisfactorily in this energy range by a spin wave model including intra- and inter-layer nearest-neighbour exchange constants J_parallel and J_perp. We find J_parallel = 127 +/- 10 meV and J_perp = 5.5 +/- 0.9 meV. The value of J_parallel is virtually the same as that found in YBa2Cu3O6.2, but J_perp is a factor of two smaller. To within experimental error the values of J_parallel and J_perp for PrBa2Cu3O6+x do not vary with oxygen doping.
We have investigated the pressure effect on the newly discovered samarium doped La1-xSmxO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductors. More than threefold increase in Tc (10.3 K) is observed with external pressure (at ~1.74 GPa at a rate of 4.08 K/GPa)) for x = 0.2 composition. There is a concomitant large improvement in the quality of the superconducting transition. Beyond this pressure Tc decreases monotonously at the rate of -2.09 K/GPa. In the x = 0.8 sample, we do not observe any enhancement in Tc with application of pressure (up to 1.76 GPa). The semiconducting behavior observed in the normal state resistivity of both of the samples is significantly subdued with the application of pressure which, if interpreted invoking thermal activation process, implies that the activation energy gap of the carriers is significantly reduced with pressure. We believe these observations should generate further interest in the La1-xSmxO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductors.

We report measurements of the phonon density-of-states in iron oxypnictide superconductors by inelastic x-ray scattering. A good agreement with ab-initio calculations that do not take into account strong electronic correlations is found, and an unpredicted softening of phonon branches under F doping of these compounds is observed. Raman scattering experiments lead us to conclude that this softening is not related to zone center phonons, and consequently imply an important softening of the relevant phonon branches at finite momentum transfer Q.
