This paper describes high-energy neutron inelastic scattering measurements of propagating magnetic excitations in PrBa2Cu3O6+x (x approx 0.2 and 0.93). The measurements probe the acoustic and optic modes of the antiferromagnetically-ordered copper--oxygen bilayers in the energy range 50-150 meV. The observed magnon dispersion can be described satisfactorily in this energy range by a spin wave model including intra- and inter-layer nearest-neighbour exchange constants J_parallel and J_perp. We find J_parallel = 127 +/- 10 meV and J_perp = 5.5 +/- 0.9 meV. The value of J_parallel is virtually the same as that found in YBa2Cu3O6.2, but J_perp is a factor of two smaller. To within experimental error the values of J_parallel and J_perp for PrBa2Cu3O6+x do not vary with oxygen doping.
Low-energy electron excitation spectra were measured on a single crystal of a typical iron-based superconductor PrFeAsO$_{0.7}$ using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe-$L_3$ edge. Characteristic RIXS features are clearly observed around 0.5, 1-1.5 and 2-3 eV energy losses. These excitations are analyzed microscopically with theoretical calculations using a 22-orbital model derived from first-principles electronic structure calculation. Based on the agreement with the experiment, the RIXS features are assigned to Fe-$d$ orbital excitations which, at low energies, are accompanied by spin flipping and dominated by Fe $d_{yz}$ and $d_{xz}$ orbital characters. Furthermore, our calculations suggest dispersive momentum dependence of the RIXS excitations below 0.5 eV, and predict remarkable splitting and merging of the lower-energy excitations in momentum space. Those excitations, which were not observed in the present experiment, highlight the potential of RIXS with an improved energy resolution to unravel new details of the electronic structure of the iron-based superconductors.
Resonant magnetic modes with odd and even symmetries were studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the bilayer high-$T_c$ superconductor $rm Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+y}$ over a wide doping range. The threshold of the spin excitation continuum in the superconducting state, deduced from the energies and spectral weights of both modes, is compared with the superconducting d-wave gap, measured on the same samples by electronic Raman scattering in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry. Above a critical doping level of $delta simeq 0.19$, both mode energies and the continuum threshold coincide. We find a simple scaling relationship between the characteristic energies and spectral weights of both modes, which indicates that the resonant modes are bound states in the superconducting energy gap, as predicted by the spin-exciton model of the resonant mode.
We have performed a detailed study of Cu $2p$ core-level spectra in single layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, La doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+delta}$ (Bi2201) and bilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+delta}$ (Bi2212) high-temperature superconductors by using hard x-ray photoemission (HX-PES). We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-doping derived high binding energy feature in the main peak. In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ satellite features seem to be strongly enhanced compared to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. From x-ray photon energy dependent measurements, it is shown that the increased intensity in the satellite region is associated with Bi $4s$ core-level spectral intensity. The corrected $d^{n}$ satellite intensity is independent of the doping content or number of Cu-O layers. Our results suggest a correlation of the relative intensity of ZRS feature and hole-doping induced high binding energy spectral changes in the main peak with superconductivity.
We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of high-Tc cuprates. Momentum-resolved charge excitations in the CuO2 plane are examined from parent Mott insulators to carrier-doped superconductors. The Mott gap excitation in undoped insulators is found to commonly show a larger dispersion along the [pi,pi] direction than the [pi,0] direction. On the other hand, the resonance condition displays material dependence. Upon hole doping, the dispersion of the Mott gap excitation becomes weaker and an intraband excitation appears as a continuum intensity below the gap at the same time. In the case of electron doping, the Mott gap excitation is prominent at the zone center and a dispersive intraband excitation is observed at finite momentum transfer.
Results of model calculations using exact diagonalization reveal the orbital character of states associated with different Raman loss peaks in Cu $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) from La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. The model includes electronic orbitals necessary to highlight non-local Zhang-Rice singlet, charge transfer and $d$-$d$ excitations, as well as states with apical oxygen 2$p_z$ character. The dispersion of these excitations is discussed with prospects for resonant final state wave-function mapping. A good agreement with experiments emphasizes the substantial multi-orbital character of RIXS profiles in the energy transfer range 1-6 eV.
