We report complex ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of a superconducting transition in very high-quality single-crystal alpha-uranium using microfabricated coplanar magnetometers. We identify an onset of superconductivity at T~0.7 K in both the real and imaginary components of the susceptibility which is confirmed by resistivity data. A superconducting volume fraction argument, based on a comparison with a calibration YBCO sample, indicates that the superconductivity in these samples may be filamentary. Our data also demonstrate the sensitivity of the coplanar micro-magnetometers, which are ideally suited to measurements in pulsed magnetic fields exceeding 100 T.

The superconducting phase diagram of MgB2 was determined from magnetization, magneto-transport and the first single-crystal specific heat measurements. A zero-temperature in-plane coherence length of 8 nm is determined. The superconducting anisotropy increases from a value around 2 near Tc to above 4.5 at 22 K. For H||c a pronounced peak effect in the critical current occurs at the upper critical field. Evidence for a surface superconducting state is presented for H||c which might account for the wide spread in reported values of the anisotropy.
We report on the synthesis of superconducting single crystals of FeSe, and their characterization by X-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistivity. We have performed ac susceptibility measurements under high pressure in a hydrostatic liquid argon medium up to 14 GPa and we find that TC increases up to 33-36 K in all samples, but with slightly different pressure dependences on different samples. Above 12 GPa no traces of superconductivity are found in any sample. We have also performed a room temperature high pressure X-ray diffraction study up to 12 GPa on a powder sample, and we find that between 8.5 GPa and 12 GPa, the tetragonal PbO structure undergoes a structural transition to a hexagonal structure. This transition results in a volume decrease of about 16%, and is accompanied by the appearance of an intermediate, probably orthorhombic phase.
We present the results of an experimental study of the nucleation of superconductivity at the surface of a single crystal YB$_6$ in a tilted dc magnetic field. A recently developed experimental technique allowed us to determine $H_{c3}$ at each side of the sample as a function of the angle between the dc magnetic field and the surface. Experiment shows that the ratio $H_{c3}/ H_{c2}approx 1.28 $ in the direction perpendicular to the surface dc field while according to the theory this ratio should be equal to 1. This sharp distinction cannot be ascribed to the surface roughness.

A model based on the alternating structure of the imbedded conduction layers (the Cu-O2 planes) with the charge-transfer-insulator (CTI) layers is proposed. There are three kinds of carriers, each with a different behavior: conduction-like holes in the Cu-O2 layers and electrons and normal holes in the CTI matrix between the Cu-O2 layers. This structure explains the strong anisotropies. The relationship is obtained between the concentration nq of conduction-like holes in the Cu-O2 layers and the temperature T. The anomalous temperature behavior of the resistivity as well as the Hall constant also follows. We give the hole density in ab plane a definite physical meaning, and also define explicitly optimal doping, overdoping and underdoping. Our model gives the correct temperature dependence of the resistivity and the hole constant on optimal doping, overdoping and underdoping, and it predicts the temperature behavior of the cotangent of the Hall angle quite well. Based on this model, we can also understand that the HiTc materials become Fermi Liquids in the extremely overdoped region, and the dR/dT becomes negative below some temperature T<1.211T0 in the underdoped case. Based on this model, the thermal behaviors of the magnetic susceptibility in different doping can also be easily explained. The resistivity along c-axis is discussed.
The quantum spin fluctuations of the S = 1/2 Cu ions are important in determining the physical properties of the high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxide superconductors, but their possible role in the electron pairing for superconductivity remains an open question. The principal feature of the spin fluctuations in optimally doped high-Tc superconductors is a well defined magnetic resonance whose energy (Er) tracks Tc (as the composition is varied) and whose intensity develops like an order parameter in the superconducting state. We show that the suppression of superconductivity and its associated condensation energy by a magnetic field in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductor, Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-d (Tc = 24 K), is accompanied by the complete suppression of the resonance and the concomitant emergence of static antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Our results demonstrate that the resonance is intimately related to the superconducting condensation energy, and thus suggest that it plays a role in the electron pairing and superconductivity.
