In complex systems such as spin systems and protein systems, conventional simulations in the canonical ensemble will get trapped in states of energy local minima. We employ the generalized-ensemble algorithms in order to overcome this multiple-minima problem. Three well-known generalized-ensemble algorithms, namely, multicanonical algorithm, simulated tempering, and replica-exchange method, are described. We then present three new generalized-ensemble algorithms based on the combinations of the three methods. Effectiveness of the new methods are tested with a Potts model and protein systems.

The generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), which involves multiple conserved quantities other than the Hamiltonian, has served as the statistical-mechanical description of the long-time behavior for several isolated integrable quantum systems. The GGE may involve a noncommutative set of conserved quantities in view of the maximum entropy principle, and show that the GGE thus generalized (noncommutative GGE, NCGGE) gives a more qualitatively accurate description of the long-time behaviors than that of the conventional GGE. Providing a clear understanding of why the (NC)GGE well describes the long-time behaviors, we construct, for noninteracting models, the exact NCGGE that describes the long-time behaviors without an error even at finite system size. It is noteworthy that the NCGGE involves nonlocal conserved quantities, which can be necessary for describing long-time behaviors of local observables. We also give some extensions of the NCGGE and demonstrate how accurately they describe the long-time behaviors of few-body observables.
We review uses of the generalized-ensemble algorithms for free-energy calculations in protein folding. Two of the well-known methods are multicanonical algorithm and replica-exchange method; the latter is also referred to as parallel tempering. We present a new generalized-ensemble algorithm that combines the merits of the two methods; it is referred to as the replica-exchange multicanonical algorithm. We also give a multidimensional extension of the replica-exchange method. Its realization as an umbrella sampling method, which we refer to as the replica-exchange umbrella sampling, is a powerful algorithm that can give free energy in wide reaction coordinate space.
Our review covers microscopic foundations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). As one generic approach we develop form factor expansions, for ground states and generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE), and compare the so obtained results with predictions from GHD. One cornerstone of GHD is the GGE averaged microscopic currents. They can be obtained using form factors. Discussed is also a second, completely orthogonal approach based on the availability of a self-conserved current.
Completely open systems can exchange heat, work, and matter with the environment. While energy, volume, and number of particles fluctuate under completely open conditions, the equilibrium states of the system, if they exist, can be specified using the temperature, pressure, and chemical potential as control parameters. The unconstrained ensemble is the statistical ensemble describing completely open systems and the replica energy is the appropriate free energy for these control parameters from which the thermodynamics must be derived. It turns out that macroscopic systems with short-range interactions cannot attain equilibrium configurations in the unconstrained ensemble, since temperature, pressure, and chemical potential cannot be taken as a set of independent variables in this case. In contrast, we show that systems with long-range interactions can reach states of thermodynamic equilibrium in the unconstrained ensemble. To illustrate this fact, we consider a modification of the Thirring model and compare the unconstrained ensemble with the canonical and grand canonical ones: the more the ensemble is constrained by fixing the volume or number of particles, the larger the space of parameters defining the equilibrium configurations.
The asymptotic equivalence of canonical and microcanonical ensembles is a central concept in statistical physics, with important consequences for both theoretical research and practical applications. However, this property breaks down under certain circumstances. The most studied violation of ensemble equivalence requires phase transitions, in which case it has a `restricted (i.e. confined to a certain region in parameter space) but `strong (i.e. characterized by a difference between the entropies of the two ensembles that is of the same order as the entropies themselves) form. However, recent research on networks has shown that the presence of an extensive number of local constraints can lead to ensemble nonequivalence even in the absence of phase transitions. This occurs in a `weak (i.e. leading to a subleading entropy difference) but remarkably `unrestricted (i.e. valid in the entire parameter space) form. Here we look for more general manifestations of ensemble nonequivalence in arbitrary ensembles of matrices with given margins. These models have widespread applications in the study of spatially heterogeneous and/or temporally nonstationary systems, with consequences for the analysis of multivariate financial and neural time-series, multi-platform social activity, gene expression profiles and other Big Data. We confirm that ensemble nonequivalence appears in `unrestricted form throughout the entire parameter space due to the extensivity of local constraints. Surprisingly, at the same time it can also exhibit the `strong form. This novel, simultaneously `strong and unrestricted form of nonequivalence is very robust and imposes a principled choice of the ensemble. We calculate the proper mathematical quantities to be used in real-world applications.
