Here we describe the results of an atomic resolution study of the structure and composition of both the interior of the grains, and the grain boundaries in polycrystalline MgB2. We find that there is no oxygen within the bulk of the grains but significant oxygen enrichment at the grain boundaries. The majority of grain boundaries contain BOx phases smaller than the coherence length, while others contain larger areas of MgO sandwiched between BOx layers. Such results naturally explain the differences in connectivity between the grains observed by other techniques.

Here we describe the results of an atomic resolution study of oxygen incorporation into bulk MgB2. We find that ~20-100 nm sized precipitates are formed by ordered substitution of oxygen atoms onto boron lattice sites, while the basic bulk MgB2 crystal structure and orientation is preserved. The periodicity of the oxygen ordering is dictated by the oxygen concentration in the precipitates and primarily occurs in the (010) plane. The presence of these precipitates correlates well with an improved critical current density and superconducting transition behavior, implying that they act as pinning centers.
Flexoelectricity is a type of ubiquitous and prominent electromechanical coupling, pertaining to the response of electrical polarization to mechanical strain gradients while not restricted to the symmetry of materials. However, large elastic deformation in most solids is usually difficult to achieve and the strain gradient at minuscule is challenging to control. Here we exploit the exotic structural inhomogeneity of grain boundary to achieve a huge strain gradient (~ 1.2 nm-1) within 3 ~ 4 unit-cells, and thus obtain atomic-scale flexoelectric polarization up to ~ 38 {mu}C/cm2 at a 24 LaAlO3 grain boundary. The nanoscale flexoelectricity also modifies the electrical activity of grain boundaries. Moreover, we prove that it is a general and feasible way to form large strain gradients at atomic scale by altering the misorientation angles of grain boundaries in different dielectric materials. Thus, engineering of grain boundaries provides an effective pathway to achieve tunable flexoelectricity and broadens the electromechanical functionalities of non-piezoelectric materials.

A new phase is detected within 100micrometers of 24 DEG ab grain boundary (GB) in YBa2Cu3O7-d 50 nm films on SrTiO3 by enhanced (001) anomalous scattering. Site identification and temperature dependence is interpreted using crystallographic weights to distinguish enhanced scattering from total electron yield and fluorescence spectra. The c-axis, c0 indicates that only ortho-I phase is present far from GB, both ortho-I and II phases are present near GB. The phase c0 is constant versus temperature across the transition to superconductivity.
MgB2 samples prepared by solid-state reaction were investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy-filtered imaging. Large amounts of coherent precipitates with a size range from about 5 nm up to about 100 nm were found in the MgB2 crystallite matrices. The precipitates are of different shapes including sphere, ellipsoid, and faceted polyhedron depending on the size of the precipitates. EDX and EELS analyses confirm that smaller precipitates contain magnesium, boron and oxygen while larger faceted precipitates contain mainly magnesium and oxygen, implying that the oxygen content increases with precipitate size. HREM and electron diffraction investigations found that the precipitates have the same crystal lattice structure as that of MgB2 but with various composition modulations depending on the composition of the precipitates. The precipitates transform to the MgO phase after long exposure to residual oxygen in flowing Ar gas at high temperatures. The effect of the precipitates in different size ranges on flux pinning is discussed.
Pseudogap phase in superconductors continues to be an outstanding puzzle that differentiates unconventional superconductors from the conventional ones (BCS-superconductors). Employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy on a highly dense conventional superconductor, MgB2, we discover an interesting scenario. While the spectral evolution close to the Fermi energy is commensurate to BCS descriptions as expected, the spectra in the wider energy range reveal emergence of a pseudogap much above the superconducting transition temperature indicating apparent departure from the BCS scenario. The energy scale of the pseudogap is comparable to the energy of E2g phonon mode responsible for superconductivity in MgB2 and the pseudogap can be attributed to the effect of electron-phonon coupling on the electronic structure. These results reveal a scenario of the emergence of the superconducting gap within an electron-phonon coupling induced pseudogap.
