Despite having been studied to a great extent, the task of conditional generation of sequences of frames, or videos, remains extremely challenging. It is a common belief that a key step towards solving this task resides in modelling accurately both spatial and temporal information in video signals. A promising direction to do so has been to learn latent variable models that predict the future in latent space and project back to pixels, as suggested in recent literature. Following this line of work and building on top of a family of models introduced in prior work, Neural ODE, we investigate an approach that models time-continuous dynamics over a continuous latent space with a differential equation with respect to time. The intuition behind this approach is that these trajectories in latent space could then be extrapolated to generate video frames beyond the time steps for which the model is trained. We show that our approach yields promising results in the task of future frame prediction on the Moving MNIST dataset with 1 and 2 digits.

Deformable image registration, aiming to find spatial correspondence between a given image pair, is one of the most critical problems in the domain of medical image analysis. In this paper, we present a generic, fast, and accurate diffeomorphic image registration framework that leverages neural ordinary differential equations (NODEs). We model each voxel as a moving particle and consider the set of all voxels in a 3D image as a high-dimensional dynamical system whose trajectory determines the targeted deformation field. Compared with traditional optimization-based methods, our framework reduces the running time from tens of minutes to tens of seconds. Compared with recent data-driven deep learning methods, our framework is more accessible since it does not require large amounts of training data. Our experiments show that the registration results of our method outperform state-of-the-arts under various metrics, indicating that our modeling approach is well fitted for the task of deformable image registration.
Training Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) is often computationally expensive. Indeed, computing the forward pass of such models involves solving an ODE which can become arbitrarily complex during training. Recent works have shown that regularizing the dynamics of the ODE can partially alleviate this. In this paper we propose a new regularization technique: randomly sampling the end time of the ODE during training. The proposed regularization is simple to implement, has negligible overhead and is effective across a wide variety of tasks. Further, the technique is orthogonal to several other methods proposed to regularize the dynamics of ODEs and as such can be used in conjunction with them. We show through experiments on normalizing flows, time series models and image recognition that the proposed regularization can significantly decrease training time and even improve performance over baseline models.
Uses of underwater videos to assess diversity and abundance of fish are being rapidly adopted by marine biologists. Manual processing of videos for quantification by human analysts is time and labour intensive. Automatic processing of videos can be employed to achieve the objectives in a cost and time-efficient way. The aim is to build an accurate and reliable fish detection and recognition system, which is important for an autonomous robotic platform. However, there are many challenges involved in this task (e.g. complex background, deformation, low resolution and light propagation). Recent advancement in the deep neural network has led to the development of object detection and recognition in real time scenarios. An end-to-end deep learning-based architecture is introduced which outperformed the state of the art methods and first of its kind on fish assessment task. A Region Proposal Network (RPN) introduced by an object detector termed as Faster R-CNN was combined with three classification networks for detection and recognition of fish species obtained from Remote Underwater Video Stations (RUVS). An accuracy of 82.4% (mAP) obtained from the experiments are much higher than previously proposed methods.
Existing unsupervised video-to-video translation methods fail to produce translated videos which are frame-wise realistic, semantic information preserving and video-level consistent. In this work, we propose UVIT, a novel unsupervised video-to-video translation model. Our model decomposes the style and the content, uses the specialized encoder-decoder structure and propagates the inter-frame information through bidirectional recurrent neural network (RNN) units. The style-content decomposition mechanism enables us to achieve style consistent video translation results as well as provides us with a good interface for modality flexible translation. In addition, by changing the input frames and style codes incorporated in our translation, we propose a video interpolation loss, which captures temporal information within the sequence to train our building blocks in a self-supervised manner. Our model can produce photo-realistic, spatio-temporal consistent translated videos in a multimodal way. Crack is one of the most common road distresses which may pose road safety hazards. Generally, crack detection is performed by either certified inspectors or structural engineers. This task is, however, time-consuming, subjective and labor-intensive. In this paper, we propose a novel road crack detection algorithm based on deep learning and adaptive image segmentation. Firstly, a deep convolutional neural network is trained to determine whether an image contains cracks or not. The images containing cracks are then smoothed using bilateral filtering, which greatly minimizes the number of noisy pixels. Finally, we utilize an adaptive thresholding method to extract the cracks from road surface. The experimental results illustrate that our network can classify images with an accuracy of 99.92%, and the cracks can be successfully extracted from the images using our proposed thresholding algorithm.
